NUS PRC scholar Sun Xu seeks help from the Chinese Embassy in Singapore pleading for second chance to ‘repay’ Singapore

Posted by temasektimes on February 26, 2012

Embattled NUS PRC scholar Sun Xu (孙旭) has sought help from the Chinese Embassy in Singapore on Thursday during its weekly reception for PRC students in Singapore, Lianhe Zaobao reported today.

Sun Xu reportedly approached the Chinese Embassy’s Secretary of Education Mr Sun Zhi Ping (孙治平) for help, expressing his regrets over his ‘inappropriate’ remarks. He told the embassy official that he has already removed the offensive comment and apologized to Singaporeans.

He also pleaded for a second chance to ‘start afresh’ and to ‘repay’ Singapore for ‘nurturing’ him all these years.

A final year student in Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore, Sun sparked a massive outcry among Singaporeans with his offensive remarks on there “being more dogs than humans in Singapore” on his microblog ‘Weibo’ last Saturday. Currently on attachment with German oilfield service company Schlumberger, Sun Xu is expected to graduate in two months’ time.

In response to queries from the media, another official from the Chinese Embassy Madam Zhou Jian Ping (周建平) said she was disappointed with Sun Xu and had asked him to apologize to Singaporeans, NUS, his teachers and friends and everybody.

“The Chinese Embassy will not submit any request to NUS. We believe the university will handle the matter in a just and fair manner,” she added.

(“大使馆不会向大学校方提出任何要求,我们相信校方会给予公正和公平的处理。”)

Madam Zhou’s stern rebuke to Sun Xu is in stark contrast to PAP MP Baey Yam Keng who initially tried to exonerate Sun from blame by saying that he might not mean what he say and then asked Singaporeans to reflect on their own behavior instead.

Sun Xu will attend a disciplinary hearing convened by NUS on 13 March where his fate will be decided.

Is he truly remorseful or is he just pure scared of getting his scholarship revoked and having to salve and pay off his dues? Or is he afraid of the backlash making him an unsuitable candidate to MAJOR MNC firms who will deem him ungrateful and thus likely no loyalty to the company? Also, rather than getting his school to help him connect with us Singaporeans with his apology, why should he go running back to his own china officials for assistance since this is not a wrongful accusation? He was so cocky then, and then now run to his statemen like a dog with tail between his legs? Goes to show how immature he is…

While I will like to give him a benefit of doubt, I think he ought to be given or should volunteer community service for 6months to OLD FOLKS HOME to drive home the point of what is call RESPECT to Singapore elderly. Booting him out only served to show us Singaporeans as petty but making him pay his dues then totally unscathed will only be an equatable “compensation” for insulting us the hands that feeds.

By threatening someone, who even met him or linked to him, with a knife if he sees him shows what type of character he is.

If one day, he becomes a superior of someone, or maybe a Minister, he will act like a “dictator”.

Show him the door, and if he thinks that he is smart, let him go and become one himself

忘恩负义,你才是连狗都不如!Singapore should seriously review its scholarship policy. Two of my ex-colleagues, also on scholarships, left Singapore after completing their bonds, one in HK now and the other, back in China. Both enjoying better remuneration packages compared to what they were getting here. So, has Singapore benefited? Only in the first few years when they were working as junior officers. What a joke!

I believe he is more afraid of getting his scholarship revoked which he is about to graduate in 2 months time and also losing the chance of a high paying job at the MNC he is attached currently which also offer opportunities in overseas posting/attachments.

My reasonings at my blog post about Sun Xu in favour for his scholarship to be revoked. Here it is: http://daringtochange.wordpress.com/2012/02/22/the-sun-xu-saga-breach-of-trust-scholarship-an-absence-of-good-upbringing/

If he could even want to use a knife and attempt harm on our own citizen, and make the swearing to the entire Singaporean population, he should bear all the cost. In fact, he should be deported. If we allow him to keep the scholarship, it will be a shame on our own students who have worked hard for their studies both local and overseas as well. We can be a small country, but that doesn’t mean someone from a far larger country of economic and political might could step over us. We are an independent city state and we have brains and minds to know what is happening. Our college and people have not bullied him to a psychological distress. And neither did we deny him of a fine education. He picked the first fight and he had been resilient until opposing forces come into act. Now he himself gets the embassy to plead. I speak from my personal experience in life that he is really very lucky for the wrong reasons. And that is, his embassy even consider helping him when he has knowingly put in all those ugly remarks. I earnestly think it would be utterly unfair if we could let him pass.

Correction to the line where I wrote that the ‘embassy even consider helping him when he has knowingly put in all those ugly remarks.’ It should read: ‘embassy even *not* consider….’ Pardon my typo.

Reblogged this on Daring to Change and commented:
The fortunate thing is that The Chinese Embassy here in Singapore does not condone to Sun Xu’s doings. Now it is up to the local government to do the final cut. At least, I feel his scholarship should go. At full force, he should leave.

  9. I have grave doubt that he is repentant by the way he is moving forward. This is the type of person who wants to have the whole cake and eat it. Why is he behaving like a dog now looking for help, for reasons known to all. He should have apologized unreservely for the comments he DARED to blurt out, and why cannot he be brave enough to take it back. A very selfish extremely selfish person.

Since he got a first chance that NO Singaporean got, at least the second chance should be reserved for a Singaporean! Give his Scholarship to a deserving Son or Daughter of Singapore Please!!

I am a Singaporean and I was upset by this labelling of Singaporeans. Indeed, this young man had shown no respect for the people who paid for his studies and his living expenses, and even opened doors with career paths paved for him.

But as a mother, I feel the pain of what a parent would have to go through. It should have been a joyous occasion to be celebrated, but now it is a nightmare.

But I concur to let this be a learning experience for him, and let it be one that will set him straight. Many have called for the revocation of his scholarship, despite the 2 months to his graduation.

I will like to suggest let him graduate, but like most Singpore kids, let him repay the amount of the scholarship and the living expenses. Let him go through what an average Singaporean child goes through – start at the very bottom! No high-flying jobs or perks! Just change the conditions tied to the scholarship.

At the same time, we need to recognize that the children we are bringing up has not learnt to respect the generations before them! It is not just Sun Xu from China, it is our our own local kids that are following suit. Let this be a lesson to both overseas and local kids – what you sow is what you reap.

He should be thankful to Singapore for giving him scholarship to attain better future for himself. This ungrateful guy will never ever appreciate what Singapore has done so what’s the point of nurturing someone like him.
There so many people out there who deserve help through education.
I hope MOE will look into the matter closely and give him a lesson to learn by revoking his scholarship.

At least the embassy lady Madam Zhou Jian Ping (周建平) doesn’t condone his behaviour. They also believe that scholars should behave in a civilised manner.
MP Baey supports him, so taht means Baey is also a dog! They’re two of a kind!

Schlumberger, remember what he has done to Singapore who literally fed him, gave hima free scholarship to study in Singapore at the expense of Singapore’s citizens.

Are you sure sure you want someone like this to be working for you. Think about it.

If you do choose to hire him after he graduate, he may turn around and insult your country or the company that has hired him.

I don’t think any right minded Singaporeans will think Sun’s remark is forgivable. Calling Singaporeans dogs are the highest disrespect any free-scholar has ever accorded to this country which supported him in every way. He has dissappointed Singaporeans. Forgiving him is to send clear signal to all other foreign scholars that a mere apology can easily run away from being irresponsible. I want NUS to revoke his scholarship, request full refund to the taxpayers and send a clear message to every foreigner students, who lived & milked from free studies, not to behave like a bullies. I still remember he even threatened other people with knife if they were to report him. He is a very dangerous foreigner.

I think he’s just the unlucky scapegoat of Singaporeans’ pent up emotions over everything wrong in this country. I’m sure other people of other nationalities have said similar things about other nationalities in a moment of stupidity. But given the public sentiment and the fact that he clearly violated the NUS code of conduct, do it the politically correct way and send him home. At least make us voters believe for a moment that our society is somewhat less two-faced and pro-foreigner.

  20. KAM said

I think the govt should serve him a lawyer’s letter for defaming Singaporeans.
And, if I were an employer, I will NOT employ him. He can be clever and with good grades, but he has a bad heart and a bad mouth.
Who needs such a person in Singapore or in my company?
We are not that “jian” (cheap). We are proud Singaporeans and he needs to “move on” and move out.

  21. Mel said

I seriously do not think that he is genuinely sorry or repentant. It is highly likely that the fear of losing scholarship, or termination of studies got to him resulting in his apologies. Previously he actually stated that we, as Singaporeans are blowing the matter out of proportion and making things occur for no apparent reason, what’s with the sudden change of attitude? Sudden realization of how “un-dog” like we are? Yeah sure. The exemplar of someone who bits the hand that feeds it.(pardon my bad translation though)

But upon saying this, what are the chance of NUS revoking his scholarship? Singapore in itself has its flaws especially towards their much valued FT. I sincerely hope that the investigation by NUS is not for show. I would be very annoyed if nothing (serious) happens to him. I dont believe in sending him for “counseling” and then closing the whole matter. Having a broad mind and accepting comments is something definitely useful in this matter, however, imagine the moral of all the student in NUS(including myself). SO WHAT IF YOU ARE SMARTER THAN US? ARENT YOU USING OUR PARENTS’ MONEY. SERIOUSLY. A mishandling of this matter will only spur more of such disrespectful comments and thoughts from such uncultivated people.

The Chinese Locust Plague phenomena hits international news when the story about Sun Xu, a Singapore-Government-fully-sponsored Chinese student studying in Singapore (since 2006) made disparaging remarks against the sponsoring nation by calling its citizens “dogs,” AM1300 news in Los Angeles this morning reported that Sun Xu had made an attempt to seek assistance from the China Embassy in Spore to salvage his situation. He was told to make a public apology instead. 呵呵。。饮水可要思源啊!
