NUS graduate student ‘strongly urged’ NUS to withdraw PRC scholar Sun Xu’s scholarship

Posted by temasektimes on February 27, 2012

An angry graduate student at NUS has written an email to NUS urging the university to withdraw the scholarship of PRC scholar Sun Xu who sparked a near nationwide uproar with his now infamous remarks on there ‘being more dogs than humans in Singapore.’

NUS Provost Professor Tan Eng Chye has already ‘counselled’ Sun Xu and a disciplinary hearing will be convened on 13 March to decide his fate.

Despite Sun’s public apology to Singaporeans on his Facebook, many are still calling for his scholarship to be revoked and even expelled from NUS.

“I know that a Board of Discipline will be convened to investigate this case. I strongly urge NUS to withdraw his scholarship and make him pay back whatever amount he had been given. Those are our local tax-payers money and it could have been put to better use to assist our local talents,” the graduate student wrote.

He added that he has to defer his studies from NUS as a result of his National Service obligations, like many other male Singaporeans:

“I am just a normal fellow Singaporean who has worked hard since graduating from Poly. Just for the records, I am from the Deans List during my Poly days as well. If you are interested, I have applied for NUS and got accepted after graduating from Poly. However, the 2 years of NS commitments and other issues, I have to withdraw my application which was already accepted by NUS. This is another reason why I felt I have to write this email.”

While Singaporeans have to pay out of their own pockets to study in NUS after which they are burdened with a hefty tuition loan, Sun Xu not only has all his tuition fees and living expenses paid for by the Singapore government, he is guarantee a well-paying job upon graduation to serve his bond.

Unfortunately for this graduate student, NUS does not have the authority to revoke his scholarship as it is paid for by the Ministry of Education.

So it looks like ONLY MOE has the authority and power to WITHDRAW his Scholarship and demand He returns the SINGAPORE TAXPAYERS’ MONEY to Singapore …..and WHAT IS MOE DOING in this regard?….

Is MOE just sitting by and waiting for the STORM to BLOW OVER?

Maybe our Education Minister has a comment on the matter?
