Tan Chuan Jin admits: Desmond Choo remains the ‘underdog’ In Hougang by-election

Posted by temasektimes on May 10, 2012

The coming by-election in Hougang appears to be a ‘stroll’ in the park for the Workers Party and even PAP leaders themselves are not optimistic about the PAP’s chances there.

An impregnable fortress of the Workers Party since WP Chief Low Thia Kiang first won the seat in 1991, Hougang voters elected its ex-MP Yaw Shin Leong into Parliament with a whooping 64.8 percent of the votes during the general election last year.

Despite Mr Yaw being embroiled in a sex scandal and left Hougang residents in the lurch, many Hougang voters remain loyal to the Workers Party.

Many political analysts and media outlets have already written off the chances of Mr Desmond Choo, the PAP’s candidate in Hougang with Yahoo News predicting an ‘easy victory’ for the WP candidate Png Eng Huat.

In a comment posted on his Facebook, Minister of State for National Development Tan Chuan Jin described Mr Choo as being the ‘underdog':

“I’ve gotten to know Desmond better over this last year. I really do think he is a good candidate to be fielded in Hougang. I guess he remains the underdog but I admire his continuing efforts immediately after GE2011.”

He admitted that he did not expect a by-election to be called so soon:

“No one expected a By-election to take place so it would have been reasonable to look towards 2016. Yet he has put in place a number of useful initiatives that has made a real difference to many people. All the best Desmond!”

The election may be days away, but WP supporters are already popping the champagne, confident that WP will win Hougang by a larger margin than last year.

Just curious why Temasek Times is always ending their articles on the by-election with:
“To learn more about Mr Choo, please visit his Facebook page here” instead of
“To learn more about Mr Choo & Mr Png, please visit their Facebook page here”. Something fishy leh!

    Hello Tan CJ,
what kind of general are you ? you give the impression the ‘kee chiu’ general and yourself are only good at hiding behind GohCT’s and LKY’s pants. About time you show thousands of NSmen including ex NSmen that you dare take to the battle even as an under-dog. You and your pal ‘kee chiu’ should draw lots and convince your gutless PM Lee that one of you should step up to the frontline in Hougang instead of Desmond…..again! Otherwise it is only fair to be scorned and despised.

    >ghost of GohKS< ……"kindly send Harry to keep me company ASAP!"

“To learn more about Mr Choo, please visit his Facebook page here.” I’m totally disgusted with this statement, always end with this statement. Initially I have neutral feelings about Mr Choo.. now you
make me dislike him. Why would I want to learn more about him.. why u keep asking your readers
to learn more about him? Why not learn more about Mr Png? Why not learn more about Mr Choo and Mr Png? Why?!
