Hougang by-election: Nearly half has voted by midday

Posted by temasektimes on May 26, 2012

Nearly half the voters have voted by midday in the Hougang by-election, said the Elections Department.

A crowd of more than 20 Hougang residents had queued up at the void deck of Blk 363, Hougang Avenue 5 to cast their votes before polling began at 8.00am today.

As today is not a public holiday, some residents arrived early to vote as they need to work later.

Hougang residents have go to the polls to vote for their MP again after their former WP MP Yaw Shin Leong was sacked from his party in February this year.

Residents we spoke to do not sound particularly excited about the poll as if it is another routine for them.

“I am voting now as I still need to work later….No, I will not be following the results, got to tang4 jiak4 (earn a living in Hokkien)”, one said.

A young couple said they would not be watching the TV tonight as well:

“Today’s Saturday okay? For ‘cheonging’!”

No permits have been given by the police for members of the public to gather and wait for the result to be announced.

23,368 voters are eligible to cast their votes. Polling closes at 8pm and the result is expected to be announced after 10pm.
