A Singaporean’s observation of Filipinos

Posted by temasektimes on June 11, 2012

A point to bring out: what mastery of English language these pinoys have? zilch if we take the international benchmark of the Angus Ross Literature prize which is almost annually won by a Singaporean since its inception. The Angus Ross prize is recognization of the best literature paper in “A” levels outside UK.

I have lived in their country more than 25 years ago, It struck me then when I was watching their daily tv channels which were predominantly about this person yakking away with his or her own opinions in some local municipal issues. Full of rah rah but no substance. To take the cake, my pinoy friend who is a doctor there passed this remark “Fiilipinos all want to be leaders.” Where are the followers? All talk and no action.

Looking at their poilitical leaders’ behaviour is a ghastly exercise of megalomaniac and ineptness. Estrada, Aquino, Marcoses were leechers to their own country with playboy attitude and cowboy rules. I once passed Baguio there and the whole place gave ma a creep – it was dark, alleys with prostitutes, drug addicts openly shooting pots.

My observation of pinoys here in Singapore is not favourable either. I have seen maids abusing little children by literally dragging the tiny tots while yakking on the phone, infesting the shopping centres with their irritating English slang and tagalog which sounded more like chickens and ducks talking. They are supeficial people in the corporate world, smiling fakely but with a dagger behind – just look at their politicians and political culture which affirm this culturally imbibed trait.

Now the pinoys are so emboldened thinking a pax-filipino can be entrenched here in Singapore. Look Pinoys! We Singaporeans are gracious and to a large extent our government policies welcome FT or the other FT*****. This is by no means you can shit and feel arrogant here. As pointed out, Vietnam and Mymmar are catching up and we can look to them as alternative source of labour. In addition, they seem more refined and gracious in their mannerisms.

Pinoys are here because they are cheap. Employers can get them for less than 1.5k per month for graduates. Local ones starts from 2.3K. So as long they are cheap, they will be here. Those 60% who still believe that they are talents are either daft or in the civil service.

Vietnam and Myanmmar need to be politically stable and be able to speak English before they can be seen as competitors to the pinoys. When I say English, it is not the standard one. One just have to talk with a pinoy to see what standard we are looking. It is very very basic English, akin to A,B and C.

End of the day. if an employer can get an American at 1.5K, he or she will get the job. Quality? Bullshit.

    • kayle said

“One just have to talk TO a pinoy to see what standard we are looking FOR,” you mean. – a pinoy

      • Chris St. A said

Kayle: you are stupid. “Talk to” and “talk with” are the same. In some circles, “talk to” is even considered rude, like you are talking down to someone of lower rank. Talk “with” implies you’re on the same level. The difference mainly lies in US and British usage. Nagmamagaling ka pang epal ka eh, kung alam ko lang Bisaya accent ka rin.

      • Klave said

Wow Chris St.! It only needs another pinoy to bad mouth a pinoy. This is exactly why our country (Philippines) is doomed. So what if one has a bisayan accent? Do you think the Tagalog accent sounds better? In my opinion, I completely agree with Jardel said except about the American part. Work quality is more of a personal aspect rather than a race aspect. Some people just suck at what they do.
As for the author of this article, anyone listening to a language that one doesn’t know would be like listening to ducks and chickens, maybe except for the french though, they sound nice even if you don’t understand anything.

    • Andre said

stupid dude, not all pinoys there are cheap, I’m challenging you to a CPF contribution and tax paid competition. I’m betting $100k sgd that I trump you by a mile. I own you Jardel fooking shet

I’m sure the commenter was referring to the mean income level of pinoys. Hurray, you have the highest income bracket. Now brace yourself for the averaging out of that with Philippine domestic workers’ wages.

I never thought that Singaporeans acted in this way. I have always viewed them to be truly educated, mild mannered. And never have I heard of Singaporeans as racist people…but this proved me wrong. How pathetic that you think of yourselves to be above others.

Cool down Pinoys. You might be offended by the post but this does not represent the entire Singaporean attitude. This is a site where Singapore sissies converge, most of haters here are losers in real life. Move on and continue what you do best.

The world is a battle of the fittest and what at least people can do when they hate their situation is blog and point fingers at someone else. I had read articles here, at most with the intent to crowd haters and with the intent to inflame. Anyway, this rarely happens in a real work scenario where people can see each other. Anyone got offended here? Let me introduce you to the Internet.

There are lots of things better to do than loiter at this blog. Don’t cry out your hearts on this. Prove yourselves at work where you earn money and not on blogs where you don’t get anything. Life is short, do what it means to excel. There are lots of opportunities to grab in Singapore where haters miss out.

  3. Kemo Sabe said

I think the Singapore has made a mistake allowing a Pinoy community to take root here. We have to learn a thing or two about how Pinoys behave. In the US for eg, if you employ a Pinoy, he brings in his family; and the family in turn bring in others of the compareys – those related not necessarily by blood but by ties of kinship made through say being a god parent of a child. If you have a Pinoy in your department, very soon it growns to two, then more; eventually a small Pinoy community emerges. If the Manager is say an American, they will “manage him out” and put one of their kind in; and they’ll proliferate and then pressure the system to do things in their favour. Smart as our leaders are, they are not so street smart against the Pinoy who can overthrow a legitimately installed government with “people’s power” Has the Philippines improved since? No. Still in the rut, because people who destabliise will go on destablishing because there are people who thrive in this environment to make good money, to enjoy some days off to protest. Pinoys are tardy. Sad to say most of the late comers in Church are Pinoy. You will find this tardiness in Singapore too. Thye will blame the traffic, the MRT breakdowns, etc. Good luck Singapore.

    • Penny Wong said

A Pinoy community took root here decades ago when their women folks came here to serve as your maids. The wages you paid your maids helped to educate their children who are now working here.

      • Kemo Sabe said

Those who came as maid did not bring along their friends and relatives. Those on employment passes do.

Contrary to what some think, their graduates are not that cheap because the educational system turn out so many graduates and accountants, but they can’t practise back home because of a system of board exams to sieve them out. So many who come here are may not be of the calibre acceptable even back in the Philippines.

What I am trying to warn here is this – be prepared for more following one, taxing our system to a point we can’t cope.

      • Xyz said

Yes but only with our gracious and loving government that allows such talents to work here.

      • deannek said

I totally agree. Its human nature to flock where employment and good opportunity is. If you look at your heritage Singaporeans are families from different countries that came to these small fishing port village for work. We Filipinos take care of your children, clean your houses, feed your household, help you make living. A little decency for my countrymen who make your lives better. To us your accent also irritates us, but the difference is we accept it. Can you honestly say the only acceptable English accent is American or Brit? C’mon

      • A.L. said

Even if you hate me and my fellow countrymen (Filipinos) and insist on discriminating against your fellow Asians, I know that those who hate us are a mere handful in a sea of better men and women. It’s because I understand that your attitudes and feelings towards all of us (Pinoys) are based on your own experiences and on the opinions you’ve formed for yourselves or have allowed other bigots to help form for you that I choose to respect all Singaporeans still.

This doesn’t mean that I have no pride whether it be pride in myself or pride for my country and my countrymen. This just means that I choose to be the better, more understanding person. I do not, in any way mean to say that I am better than all or any Singaporean. Instead of taking the bait, getting upset and inciting more hatred, I choose to let your words teach me to be a better person, a more aware person. Reading the hateful, painful and undeserved comments did sadden me, especially because I love Singapore and the people who live, work, thrive, survive and try their best to make it here. But my sadness is alleviated by the knowledge that, surely, there are Singaporeans out there who don’t feel this way towards us.

In the many times I’ve been here, I haven’t really experienced any raw or intense discrimination because I don’t look, act or speak like your stereotypical Filipino. I look and am often mistaken for a Hong Kong or American Chinese citizen because of my features, light skin, height (I am about 5’8″ tall), size (I am much larger than the average Filipino) and because I write and speak grammatically correct American English with a neutralized accent. If I don’t speak, I am often mistaken for a Singaporean, too.

I hope we can all stop the hatred and discrimination towards each other or towards any other person, race, ethnicity, etc. Don’t we all really just want peace and harmony in the end? I know I do.

Go to any western country and it is Indian and Chinese who is globally considered to have the funniest accents. Not only that Filipinos have the 2nd highest median household income in the United States after Indians. That doesn’t sound like a people who are uneducated and rotten. If anything Filipinos are one of the more well-respected ethnic groups in the US because they come to America already knowing English unlike the Latinos or other ethnic groups.

All foreigners as long as they can be exploited will be exploited by the Political Leaders and their cronies (Employers)…and as long as Pinoys are dumb enough to be exploited and get paid less then their officialy declared pay…the so call economic growth of Singapore will be at the expense of singaporeans and productivity will remain low…..

I have come across filipinos who accept “employment” under such onerous conditions…where is their pride?.They have no choice….accept exploitation or go hungry in Philippines…..They remain an exploited people…that is why there are millions of them worldwide without them their country will collapse.

    • Jl2nUvv said

Agreed wholeheartedly. Exploited by their own corrupted leaders back home. Exploited by other governments abroad. For cheaper wages, for votes. Pathetic situation really, yet they will never realize it. Just look at those ‘prideful’ bunch. Believing they’re more talented. Nonsense.

If they believe they’re more talented simply because they can secure jobs, no arguments needed already. You can see their intellectual limitations from that viewpoint alone.

      • Conrad said

I think you don’t understand. What we are demonstrating is a trait present in every human. Surviving. Yes, our country isn’t the best place to be in right now. Like what Spotlessleopard said, and you agreed to wholeheartedly, ” accept exploitation or go hungry in the Philippines”. Who the hell in their right mind would choose to go hungry? 🙂 To hell with pride!

To put it simply, we are just thinking outside the box. You may say, “stay in the Philippines and help change it for the better”, that’s all good but change doesn’t happen overnight. In the meantime, where are we going the get the money to put food on the table?

And i cannot blame you guys, we “bring home the bacon EH!” imagine, we earn, say starting salary as SGD3k, then remit to Philippines where we can buy cars, big house, build business, send children to good school, while you, here?

“Walao Eh! no money leh, imagine ah, average singaporean diploma 1.8K only eh! topup card, da pao mee fan, THEN HOW?”

KC, you should be grateful to your host for giving you a good life instead of making such condescending remarks. Hope you dont make your boyfriend speak Taglish. Btw, the equivalent of a SGD 1.8k ( exclusive of CPF ) salary for a Singaporean is gross max SGD 1.0k for you. Not to worry, you will get the job – because you are cheaper. And, yes, you should thank our government.

    • Chris St. A said

“To hell with pride,” Conrad says accurately. The stomach comes first. To heap scorn on Flips as a “prideful bunch” and then later ask “where is their pride” in going abroad to work is contradicting yourself. If you don’t have money, the only thing you have left is pride, otherwise you’d do something illegal for a living. Working for low wages abroad is not at all dishonorable.

This is particularly interesting because the Philippines, a country with one-tenth of the population of India, recently overtook India as a hub for call centers.4 Joining the Philippines in the top five were Norway (6.54), Estonia (6.45), Serbia (6.38) and Slovenia (6.19).

It is not surprising that both the Philippines and Norway—the only two countries in the top five in both 2011 and 2012—are improving their economies, based on the latest GDP data from the World Bank. The increased Business English capability for global workers from these two countries is an indicator of continued economic growth and business success.”

  16. Just spreading the word to other countries. said

Before you base your judgement on a race from a bunch of bad apples to realize that not all Filipinos are such. As long as a bad example is set by one unfortunate Filipino, you immediately group them all into one. Sadly, there are Filipinos who let their pride get to them as you have mentioned and observed (like other people regardless of race who suddenly feel like they are the almighty after reaching a more stable country i.e. USA, Canada). However, there are others, probably the majority, who stay humble, hardworking and unnoticed. Regardless, no one has the right to judge anyone, either parties. Filipinos should watch themselves too before they retaliate. Nevertheless, I hope and look forward to a resolution that would allow both parties to live in Singapore in harmony. Sigh, I really miss that. Having been raised in Singapore for the majority of my life (surprise surprise) I can never just tell anyone I am from my native country, I always have to mention Singapore, and how Singaporean I feel. Hence all these FT hate (especially to Filipinos, PRCs etc) is really unsettling. I come home to Singapore (surprise again, Singapore is my home) feeling like it is a totally different place.

    • Jl2nUvv said

You cannot blame Singaporeans for generalizing as such. There are way more prideful Pinoys than the humble and hardworking ones. Batch sampling, good sir; if 90% of the crate is filled with bad apples, it is better to do away with it entirely.

Thank you for your honest opinion about us “Filipinos”. I hope GREAT people like will not be judged just like the way you are judging us “Filipinos”…

  18. Commoner said

By posting this you only demonstrated:

    Immaturity

You have successfully succumbed to your anger and went ahead to discriminate a certain community.
Apparently, the education system in the Philippines follows the US system. NONE of them would consider and pursue an A-level certificate because it is not a requirement to obtain higher forms of education — like what they seek in their locals Universities. Straightforwardly, they won’t even bother taking A-levels. BUT if you talk about SAT, of course most of the students who can afford a proper education would be sure to have taken it.

Estrada, Aquino and Marcos(this guy is a communist, by the way) are all worst presidential leaders. Many of the Filipinos are completely ashamed of them already, and you still choose to be so anal about it.

So please, do read up first yeah? Don’t go babbling on sensitive stuff that may spur unhealthy competition around us here.

You don’t deserve a point of view, if the only one you see is you.

PS. I agree that the Filipinos can be really big-headed and nettlesome but we still need to live on the right principles to build a good community. Respect is indeed imperative in SG

    • G M said

Respect has to go both ways. Pinoys in S’pore have gotten too swollen-headed, strutting around with an inflated, often false, sense of self-worth. They need to check their attitude or go home.

    • HGt65aKt said

SATs can not compare to the standards of education we have here. Do your research. Pick up the books, and see for yourself.

Statements regarding the failed politicians are simply supportive evidence to his perspective. We should not mention any sensitive evidence? Gingerly step around it? In what court of law, pray tell, does that work?

Immaturity is the inability to recognize this as a groomed article of debate, and your failure to refute it intelligently.

I do not blame you however, maybe you were never taught how to, so i’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.

  19. ronald said

Sometimes you people are so intent in hitting out at everything the government does you don’t even know what you’re saying. 🙂

  21. New Jersey resident said

Nice comment and feedback. I say I agree on half of what’s written here. The article solely depicts the negative side of an Asian race. Wonderful.

I guess it would also seem fair if I comment on the negatives–this time towards the writer’s perspectives and/or writing style. For starters, looking at technical errors above anything else, it appears that the writer has adapted to the UK English standard of spelling and sentence constructions (no problem there). I found a lot of grammatical errors and I would love to list ALL of them. On the contrary, I would also like to make my comment as short as possible.

A few of the technical errors:

    a. “Recognization.”
    b. Growns to twos?
    c. Use of “which” instead of “that”
    d. Gracious mannerisms. Surely, you meant manners (malapropism)?
    e. Dangling modifiers
    f. Verb tenses
    g. “MYANMAR”
    h. Let’s say lots of errors in sentence structure

    Misconception:

Stereotyping. This has been very common among nations. Whites, blacks, Chinese, Filipinos and heck, Singaporeans, too. We use stereotyping for humor. Apparently, this article is using it to “describe” a nation. For that, we thank you. I agree that some of it are true. Moving on, I listed a few of the concepts that the writer had mistakenly

    a. “Filipinos all want to be leaders.” Seriously? Do you have high regards towards your friend or even believe this doctor friend of yours to that extent? All talk, no action–as ridiculous as it may sound, I would beg to differ. You may be right that there are Filipinos who are, indeed, like this, but I personally think that this applies to all nations regardless of culture. To cite an example, look at where US is standing now as far as economy is concerned. Right. All talk, no action.
    b. I once passed Baguio there and the whole place gave ma a creep– Apart from the error in the sentence structure and spelling, what the hell are you talking about? I grew up in Baguio and I couldn’t think of an alley with prostitutes, drug addicts “publicly” engaging in pot. Come to think of it, Baguio is recognized as one of the cleanest and safest cities in the Philippines… but sure… why would anyone believe someone who lived in Baguio for more than three decades (sarcasm).
    c. Politically speaking, I admit our country has never been at the top of the list. In fact, you may see us at the bottom of the list. Our new government administration is doing its best to get rid of corrupt officials and the president has been doing a good job, so far. This is a slow, working progress so anything you throw at us regarding politics is respected.
    d. Vietnam and Myanmar are catching up and we can look to them as alternative source of labor. That’s your opinion and I highly respect it. Letting out strong words such as these give me the impression you are one of your country’s leaders. With the above insights, we humbly thank you for sharing us your thoughts.

Well ultimately it is not about bad Filipinos but BAD government policy – policy enacted without proper consideration of the repercussions. We can’t change the nature of Filipinos and they sense of community – but we ought to know the knock on effects.

Filipinos are the international nurses, doctors, English teachers, domestic helpers, musicians and workers of the this part of the globe because they can understand and make themselves be understood much better but this is a general trait of people who take any opportunity to uplift themselves is it not? I am a Filipino, a highlander, an Asian and a world citizen. Why be so regionalistic? The traits you have stated are found everywhere in the same circumstances. Peace, the reason Singapore is what it is lies in the understructure of its trade and people and Philippines is a vital part of that.

The only way these invaders can survive is to try to eradicate the host from the area altogether. There is another organism on earth that follows the same pattern: It’s called a virus. These invasions are like a disease, a cancer of the country. Is there a cure or will Singapore die from this disease?

Shame on Temasek Times for carrying a racist write-up. It is racist as it harps on the so-called bad characteristics of the Phillipines, their leaders, their way of talking etc. Whatever happens in the Phillipines is their country and their business.

There have been recent angry exchanges and insults hurled in the social media. It is no different than petty quarrels and Singaporeans should not succumb to such petty quarrels and take sides just because we are Singaporeans.

The crux of the matter is that there are too many Filipinos working in the service sector and that is the most prominent area too in terms of interaction with the shopping crowd. Seldom have I read about sending the Filipino maids home. By and large most are well-behaved despite the sacrifices they make.

So, this is an issue that the government needs to address… how to strike a suitable balance. Tell us the quota, tell us what areas they are employed and how are visas issued, etc.

    • PAP policies the problem said

      Think harder lah Ron!
The crux of the matter is the PAP’s ill thought policies that is causing all the frustrations around. It is imperative to make PAP the minority in parliament before things can get better for sporeans, i.e. rewrite policies for CPF, HDB, Education, Jobs, Immigration, Manpower, Minimum Wages, Appointments of key personnel, etc, etc.

actually, there is just one person who hates FTs and makes a comment here, then the other FT haters gather round and make a commotion. In the end they form an anti-FT mob. Everybody just really can’t please anybody.

I know a group of Singaporeans who always collaborate with the Filipino community to create harmonious racism-free events to gather everyone regardless of race who just wants to have a good time. Hence they also have a pro-FT group.

The social environment is always divided by groups anyways. Whether which part of the globe you go to, every community has it. all of you guys have a choice actually. either waste your time growing wrinkles on your faces hating each other, or spend it on an activity that will make yourselves more productive.

what does this activity aim to do anyways? it will just make you hate each other more and it will just go on and on an on, and it wouldn’t stop… and the result? you still hate each other… so what happened? nothing – just energy, time, wasted on hating each other.

    correct? or correct?

This post saddens me because instead of trying to get along and understanding each other, people choose to focus on the negative things about other cultures. While it’s true that most Filipinos speak heavily-accented English, doesn’t that also apply to the French, Germans and Singaporeans? I can list more nationalities which don’t quite have mastery of the English language. Since when has mastery of the English language become an indication of intelligence? I live in the US and have met a lot of folks who speak perfect English (them growing up here an all). Frankly, not a lot of them have much substance behind what they say.

I’m not even going to point out all the grammatical and spelling errors in this poorly-written article – I find that a huge waste of time because I understand that English is not the national language in Singapore. It’s simply ignorant to think otherwise. And though I respect freedom of speech and the need to voice out personal opinions, I believe this post is very unhelpful in fostering harmony amongst the Singaporean community.

Hahaha! This is hilarious! What an ignorant piece of crap called “article”is this, I read. Let me tell you why:

The so-“facts” are selective and biased. Basing the general to the specific is fallacy of ignorance to the nth degree. What about leaders like Fidel V. Ramos? UN Sec Gen Carlos P. Romulo? How about the countless “Flip-pinos”that died fighting in WW 2? The Boy Scouts of the Philippines that served as recon scouts and medicsfor wounded soldiers both domestic and foreign?

Maybe you should be reminded of your “dark” past since you feel so high-and-mighty.Remember, STINK-A-POO? Before Lee Kwan Yew, Singapura is a DRUG-PORT to the West. Kinda like the Netherlands, only 10 times as worse. It was also an ARMS POST ……nope not for the Brits, but for PIRATES! Reason why is Singapura is a strategic post in the Asian region. A moat, if you will. Singapura got to where its at because it wanted to erase its past because Singapura has no history worth remembering. Lee Kwan Yew created your history.

Oh, and btw, NO SINGAPOREAN , I know is serving the US Armed Forces. Filipinos do, and have succeeded in making it their career. Imagine, the toughest training in the face of the earth.

  48. iai said

Thanks for reading my humble post. I am no racist. I am a loyalist, loyal to my country Singapore. I am entitled to voice out what may seem the influx of FTs has changed the social fabric of our society. I say this again as a true bred local here.

Look at the Pinoy Land where nuns and priests in their frocks marched in the open to protest. Their brand of Catholicism is a dangerous mix of politics and religion. Can we afford these Pinoys to introduce this brand of street politics here? In one of my trips to a mountain resort from Manila with an over-enthusiastic tour guide giving us tourists a run-down of Marcos govenance instead of a running commentary of the tourist sites along the bus trip. We were entertained for a few hours of local babbling politics. Quite amusing from a Singaporean point of view.

Let me reiterate my stance again: you are our guests to work and live here. Do not try to meddle in our local ways of doing things such as our healthy multireligious and multiracial understanding among Singaporeans. We may not be perfect as a nation or society, but our fore-fathers, our families and our children build Singapore as she is today. It is not charity for you to come here as you seek a better livelihood. Appreciate the door open to you. Hold your head high by earning a decent living and not be swell-headed. Do not assume opportunities are always there open to you. When it comes to the crunch, Singaporeans will stand side by side as it is only natural for this is our HOME.

    • ibyang said

”Do not try to meddle in our local ways” ??? Filipinos go to Singapore to work, who cares about meddling in your local ways? Wake up man, we all are just specks in this whole wide world. And just one trip to a mountain resort with some remarks from a tour guide does not make you a Filipino expert.
”It is not charity for you to come here as you seek a better livelihood.” Then stop being charitable, tell your government to stop hiring Filipinos. You need the Filipinos, you call for them, so you must accept them.

BTW, you are overthinking this stuff, man. What are you on?

    • iai said

I noticed no Pinoys here commented on their firebrand catholicism which is ridiculous to say the least. Nunnery frocks and habits kneeling on the street to protest against their government. Theatrical but no substance. They should tend to their flocks in a dignified religious manner in their place of worship and not spoiling the good religion by marching on the streets. If pinoys here dare to do that in my homeland, we will round you up and put you in Changi Prison with complimentary free meals. I love the law and order in my beloved homeland Singapore. My advise: don’t mess with our peaceful social harmony. Look at Hong Kong, their maids want permanent residencey as if it is a right, Luckily the supreme court made it clear it is the government to decide on this.

Pinoys are opinionated as seen at all levels of their society. You ask a question, they give you non-stop verbal diarrhea of what they think of this or that. No wonder it is not easy to govern their people. All want or think like leaders. Where are the followers? Is this self-importance or a display of oneupmanship? A prominent Singaporean banker was quoted in the local newspapers that “I do not know how to do business in Phillippines.” When I read that I was puzzled as this person owes one of the local Big Four banks here and decided to branch out its banking business in the Phillippines. The overseas venture was a disaster and he made that statement. Coming from a respected banker, it says alot. I guess it was a headache dealing with pinoys even in business areas. I did not even touch on discussing their corrupt government there… read the newspapers and I rest my case.

If I hurt any pinoys I am sorry, My motivation is clear: when you go to a guest country, respect the country’s norms and ways of life. Don’t overstep the boundaries and we are watching you on how you conduct yourself here. It is not too late to self-reflect for those who are guilty of this. For a start, a little toning down of the volume of your tagalog dialogue in public places will be much appreciated by us.

I agree on your first and second statement. Filipino politics or governent should be secular. Meaning filipino politician should abide, respect, follow and decide based on the constitution not on their religious belief. I’ve been a victim of reglious self righteousness of this so called christian catholics since I have a different religous belief. But I would never generalize a society that have different views and outlook in life.

Pinoys are opinionated, not all are. I’ve been working in one of the largest Shared oil companies. We know how to respect our team lead. We dine and party wiht our foreign and local bosses but we exercise restraint because we know they hold a position in our office.

I envy your country for having one of biggest economies in Asia and law that is secular and non religious. I am one of the filipinos that want to work and live in Singapore. But one this is for sure, I will go back to my country for the fact that we are more humble and family oriented.

You can write your blog in a more positive way but then again it’s your blog. It’s your opinion but opinions is not an abosolute truth.

While I am inclined to retaliate with harsh words regarding your post, I opted not to. Simply because it will add fuel to a fire and perhaps it is not an educated manner to address this. While your observations and your blog may have points and merits, they have became moot because of the way you have addressed them. You have infuriated majority of Filipinos because you have degraded them. Degrading Filipinos in a way that implies your are above us, and you expect that you will be understood as not being a racist? How naive? Discrimination, racism, religions are subjects that are sensitive. They require the utmost intelligence when one has to tackle them and debate them. Your sentiments are lost and the merits they have because this is not a ” HUMBLE ” post. You claim to be loyal to your country, I do not question that. As Filipinos, we are loyal to our country as well, despite all the ugliness it posses. But we are also bent on defending our nation and our nationality once we are stepped on.We will also stand side by side if we are being treated unfairly. Singapore is a beautiful country no doubt, which is why a lot of Filipinos go there to earn a living. But do not taint it with a blog like this. Your post have generalized the whole Filipino community which is an err in your part. Have you considered the repercussions of this? Is it also clear to you that as a response to your post we have generalized Singaporeans as racists? I don’t think it is fair, right? Because I firmly believe that though I haven’t been to your country, Singaporeans have the ability to be educated and to prove that you are educated. We as people of our country have our flaws, also our system, education, government, culture and religion. While we all enjoy the ” FREEDOM ” of speech, still we must be cautious enough not to abuse it. While it is not in my desire to engage anyone in a debate, I am not hiding my name under fancy aliases. And this is coming from someone who only finished secondary school.

Reading this makes me wonder what kind of breeding the author grew up with.

I am from Baguio, the place you just mentioned with dark alleys and prostitutes. You talk about it like your city has none. You talk as if you’re city is this haven of saints. You even use words such as “megalomaniac” and “ineptness” to try to show yourself off as an intelligent person when your actions and pretenses and nothing more than dumb and prehistoric. You have the thinking of a Neo-Nazi Asian guy who talks about Asians like they don’t belong to the same continent. Honestly, what the hell is wrong with you? My Dad works abroad and has been doing so for the past 20 years, not seeing us grow up, just so he could give us a better life. So are those Filipinos with “…their irritating English slang and tagalog which sounded more like chickens and ducks talking.” who left their families here for just the same reasons.

I’m appalled. I used to look up to your country. Had that dream that maybe my country could reach even half of what you’ve accomplished. Now, I guess you know how one would feel after what you just wrote. But one person’s actions or words don’t speak for a whole nation. That much I do hope for.

I am appalled by the sheer amount of racism and sweeping generalizations in this article. The Philippines (and Filipinos) have its own share of flaws (e.g. poverty, corruption, lack of law enforcement, etc.) and I am sure Singapore isn’t spotless either (e.g. ageing population, income disparity, etc).

I can hardly consider the Angus Ross Literature prize as the “world standard” in measuring someone’s English ability. That’s what the TOEFL and IELTS are for: a standardized English test that all the world’s universities and companies (read: not just outside but inside the UK, mind you) recognize.

It’s unfortunate that you have witnessed the negative side of living in the Philippines. No country is perfect and I’m sure Singapore has its own social problems. I will not justify your observations about my country as I have seen the other side of living in the island of Singapore that would most definitely not make its way in your state-controlled mainstream media and tourist guides.

I do not judge a whole nation by a small number of its citizens either. Every person is different and I tend to look at the bigger picture in every person I meet.

To wrap things up, you don’t improve the state of your country by stepping upon other nations. I’m sure we all aspire of having the good life someday; we all just differ in the way we achieve it. When you start throwing mud at another person, the people seeing the fight will have a bad taste in his mouth, just like what this article did. Don’t expect the next slew of comments to be quite civil as I admit a number of my fellowmen can get emotional when national pride is at stake. Too bad for the author, we’re actually celebrating our Independence Day today.

At the end of the day, you’ve said your piece but have you actually done something to improve the situation? You don’t like seeing Filipino maids in your HDB flats but your government keeps on encouraging foreign talents to come to Singapore. Admit it or not, you need us as much as we need you. There’s not much work where these maid come from so they have to seek work elsewhere. Just imagine if all the FTs leave Singapore; whose going to man all your shops and do civil service?

I’m inspired by the way Singapore has elevated itself after having separated from Malaysia decades ago, how LKW has pursued the type of economy you all Singaporeans enjoy. But behind all those gleaming high rise building walls and trendy shopping districts, you can never hide the fact that the foreigners you so love to criticize are the ones running your economy.

    Sincerely,

    Eizan

Wow. What an observation. Here’s my take.

Who said we have a “mastery” over English? Maybe it’s best that you should complain to them? Hmm, it seems that the way you’re putting it is that all the locals speak good english because one of your countrymen always wins the Angus Ross Literature Prize? Please correct me if I’m wrong. 🙂

Yakking away with his or her own opinions.. How can you say it had no substance? It’s the same thing with this article, you may think this has substance and we may think that this has no substance. Pretty subjective right? It’s either that or you don’t respect other people’s opinions. Please don’t tell me that these are all observations. You always follow up your observations with your own opinions. “Filipinos all want to be leaders.” C’mon, a little ambition didn’t hurt anybody.

Ok, Our political history may not be perfect. So what? Is there a perfect government? I agree with you that that their behaviour was a “ghastly exercise of megalomaniac and ineptness”. But on the brighter side at least our country isn’t as war-torn as the middle east. As for the Baguio thing, I guess you missed out on the good stuff there.

I am really sorry that all you see in us are our faults. It is unfair to pass judgement on the majority because of the minority. You even find our language “irritating and like chickens and ducks talking”. I realized that this is not an observation but hatred talking.

With that said, I would like to thank you for your opinions and observations and I will take this as constructive criticism. First thing I’ll try to do tomorrow is not to sound like a duck or a chicken. 🙂

    Good day!

I feel so sorry for you Mr/Ms Lai for your failed perceptions about Filipinos. You say that you have lived in the Philippines 25 years ago. My question to you is, does your having lived here make you such an expert about us Filipinos?

Which part of the Philippines did you go to? cause it looks to me as though you were staying in the slums or some of the depressed areas in the Philippines. Watching local TV shows? Well Singaporean expert, tell me how should a local noon time show be?

All I can see with your blog is a lot of hate. Why is that? Did you come to the Philippines to work 25 years ago and failed because you were so inept and lacking in skills that you were fired eventually? Did you have Filipina girlfriends who dumped you because you weren’t good enough for them and now you have to take it against all of the Filipinos who are trying to earn an honest living?

You say that you went to Baguio and saw things i.e. pot sessions, prostitutes etc. My next question is, why the hell where you in that area anyway? When in fact, there are more posh areas, clubs and hotels and restaurants that you could have gone to instead.

Oh I know, maybe you couldn’t afford to go to the places where we decent, educated and classy people go to. Or you must have been so cheap to spend your hard earned pennies to go to better places.

A lot of people in our Government I have to agree with you are corrupt, but hey, it’s our country and whatever our affairs are, are none of your business. We don’t go around saying things about your people, like the way your government has to be strict with all of you and have implemented fines because you and your kind of people “spit” everywhere else or that you couldn’t even throw your thrash in the proper trash receptacles.

Look, if you hate Filipinos so much, then one suggestion, you should start a program to teach your own people how to clean your homes, wash your clothes, do your laundry or more basically, take a shower at least twice a day and brush your teeth regularly, so that we Filipinos, do not have to smell your shitty smell everyday and do your jobs for you. Oh and I don’t think I should even mention how you and your kind don’t even know how to clean your own toilets.

For your so called being an educated person, you surely have shown in your blog that it is you who needs lessons in refinement. Oh and did i mention that you didn’t even proof read your blog prior to posting it because there are quite a number of grammatical errors and wrongly spelled words, Mr. Literature savvy sack of vile.

Lastly, to Nasi Lemak times, you call what you have done here by allowing Lai to post his ridiculoous blog, responsible journalism? If you do, then all I can say to you, is you can kiss my sweet smelling, beautiful brown ass.

As the top economy in Asia (next to Japan) in the 1960 s and ’70s, we even boasted to have the first airline in Asia. When Malaysia’s Putrajaya complex was developed to give a new face to Malaysia’s seat of power, we had already did this with the proposed development of Roxas Boulevard where the cultural center and coconut palace have been constructed 10 years before. When Singapore structured its economy to become the leader in Southeast Asia, we were a silent partner in this; our architects, engineers, nurses and IT specialists are part of the team that led the development.

Well, Filipinos usually don’t care about people who talk about them all because they know that when other countries start talking smack about them, this obviously just points out that these countries have way less interesting things to ponder up on their own country’s issues. Argue all you want, Filipinos already have been acclaimed as the number 1 business English speaking country in Asia. So, don’t be hating just try to catch up or better yet, grow up.

I pity you Singaporeans who live in a country that is suppressed. You have no freedom whatsoever. Your government treats you like little children. Show me a Singaporean who has brought honor to your country globally. None. You think you are superior? Think again.

    • Filipinos are generally more hospitable, humorous and resilient. They can multitask at the workplace unlike many Singaporeans who refuse to keep their work areas tidy because sweeping floors is demeaning to them (and I’ve heard this anecdote from other nationalities who are not Filipino but work in Singapore).

Cultural differences will always exist, whichever country you may find yourselves in. It’s a matter of practicing diplomacy which in turn leads to respect and tolerance towards other races.

A piece of advice to the author: if you’re still living in the Philippines after having this bigotry-laced article published online, do your current hosts a favor and go home to your country. The Philippines doesn’t need ungrateful visitors/residents like you, whether you’re Singaporean or from another country.

All races have flaws, Pinoys, Singaporeans, Americans, Europeans and stuff.

The observations are accurate but, it just don’t happen to pinoys, it also happens to other races.

By having this post, i think it would just create conflict between 2 countries.

Why pinpoint the negative things, can we focus on the good qualities?

I hear your frustrations. And I certainly respect your opinions. As they say, where there’s smoke there’s fire. It seems like many Filipinos I have met so far tend to be lazy and enjoy backstabbing others. Having grown up and educated in the states, I feel ashamed as a Filipino. I was proud to be a filipino until I started hanging out with other filipinos. They only bring you down with them. They destroy each other too. I was hurt when it was done to me. I don’t understand why they do that. They even have a name for it… “crab mentality”. If you take a basket of crabs, and as one of the crabs get to the top of the basket, another crab pulls him down. Not having grown up in Filipino culture, I am still trying to make sense of the behavior.

As much as I want to vent and bad talk them, I’m a firm believer that most people in this world are good. I know we’re both frustrated, and it would be easy just to call them names, blame them, put them back on a boat for Manila, and never see them again. But let’s try to keep an open mind, and look at it at a different angle.

The educated Filipinos don’t come to Singapore to work as maids. The educated ones get jobs or open up businesses. Hence, they never have to leave the country. What Singapore is getting is a batch of Filipinos who have very little education and are willing to take on jobs many of us frown upon. They do this so they can send money back so they can feed their families. It must be hard for them to live in a different country and have to acclimate. LIke most human beings, I am sure many of them would prefer to be with their families in their home country instead. But I’m also aware that this doesn’t excuse their behavior. All I can ask is to try putting yourself in their shoes.

Somehow, I don’t think that all of the blame should be to the leaders of their country. I think it resides in themselves. They need to start taking responsibility – as individuals and as a race.

I admire you for your courage in expressing your opinions. It must have been very hard to have to post this. All I can say is that I’m sorry this happened. Be rest assured that not all Filipinos behave like this. I know many Filipinos are reading this and, hopefully, are doing some introspections. I hope it brings about change – to Filipinos: knowing that they’re getting a bad reputation and should try to bring about change, and to the Non-Filipinos: who will use this to try to be more patient, understand them, and guide them instead of belittling them. I know it won’t be easy. They’re in your country, whether you like it or not. The best thing to do is to lead by example and continue being a role model for them.

Philippines is a country that can take an active role in business discussions and perform relatively complex tasks.

Check your country’s level of competency:

  71. thedullandignorant said

Only the Philippines attained a score above 7.0, a BEI level within range of a high proficiency that indicates an ability to take an active role in business discussions and perform relatively complex tasks.

The increased Business English capability for global workers from these two countries is an indicator of continued economic growth and business success.

As I raise my son to be a citizen of this world, I will keep you in mind. Because you are the complete anti-thesis of what I want my son to be when he grows up.

I will teach him the difference between human beings and batches of fruit. I assure you, the two are not comparable even in the most unimaginative and flawed of analogies.

I will teach him the true definition of the world “prideful”. All you have to do is look up its meaning to see that the word better applies to you. It shows in every single one of your hateful and bigoted comments on this pathetic, sorry little post.

I will teach him the difference between “fact” and “opinion”. Claiming that “this article is not racist”, but is rather fact backed up by “supportive evidence”, shows you think that any ignorant conclusion you draw in your tiny, closed mind is a “fact”. I assure you, it is not. Do not be so delusional.

I will teach him to be open and accepting of other cultures and races. He will grow up knowing that the world is a vast place filled with a thousand different nationalities and that each of these nationalities come with their own quirks, so he may grow up being big and open-minded. Not small and scared like you obviously are. Because these hate messages you type in here are quite clearly stemming from your ignorance, and fear of what you do not truly understand.

I will teach him to put forward whatever opinions ad arguments he has without being blinded by bigotry or hate. Because frankly, whatever logical point you have is tainted by your inability to put aside your pettiness for argument’s sake. And you end up sounding like a right idiot posing as an intellectual.

I will teach him to pity people like you, whose intellectual limitations go far beyond the academic. You may be schooled, but you have no idea how small-minded you actually are.

I will teach him to be tolerant and compassionate. I will teach him to be kind.

I will teach him to be the exact opposite of you, because I would like to leave this world a better place. If you and others like you had learned such things growing up, then the world will be a much better place to live. Unfortunately, in this day and age we still have to suffer fools like you. And all we can do is teach our kids better, and hope that someday we would have evolved beyond such ignorance as you have demonstrated.

As far as I can see, all you are good for is setting an example of what a decent human being should not be. And so I thank you for that small, albeit unknowing, contribution at least.

    Now off you go. Shoo.

Average Filipinos do not take GCE A-level exams, unless they plan on studying in the UK or its former colonies, and as far as I know, the Angus Ross prize is only awarded to those who took A-level exams.

I don’t know where you get this “Filipinos’ mastery of the English language is zilch” crap, but we do have the best business English in the world, at least according to the GlobalEnglish Corporation’s index (http://ph.news.yahoo.com/ph–world-s-best-country-in-business-english.html). A lot of employers would also love to have Filipinos in their payroll because they can understand Filipino English more than Singaporean English, Chinese English, or even Indian English. Of course, you Singaporeans think your English is better than Filipino English. It’s your “flavor,” anyway. But I’ve worked with a lot of Americans, Brits, and Australians, and they would always say, “I really prefer working with Filipinos. Their accent is easier to understand, compared to the Singaporeans.”

Well if you don’t want Filipinos working in Singapore, go and complain to your government. Get Vietnamese and/or Burmese maids, if that’s what you really prefer.

The recent ‘sex for tender’ scandal involving ex-SCDF Chief Peter Lim Sin Pang and the ongoing
underage prostitute sex scandal implicating several high-level government officials have shocked
the entire nation and raised serious questions on the degeneration of moral values in today’s
    modern society.

While Singapore’s laws are skewed largely in favor of women, especially the Woman’s Charter
which protects their rights and interests, the reality on the ground is that an increasing number
of them are willing parties initiating ‘deals’ with men to sell their bodies in exchange for
    financial gains.

Besides a thriving social escort industry which provides ample opportunities for Singapore women
to make a quick buck, many are openly soliciting for ‘sugardaddies’ online.

Good folks of both sides. This is a pointless exercise. Singaporeans are no better than Filipinos, neither are we worse off than each other.

The socio-economics, demographics are as diverse between us two countries. However, we do have something in common – that is we are plagued by failed policies that had frustrated many of us. Taking the racist route is by far the coward’s way of viewing the predicaments we faced today. We blame others while glorifying ourselves. Sadly, this seems to be the case here.

We are not pawns or just another statistic. We are decent folks whom just want to have financial stability to take care of our families and maybe vacations thrown in. I do not blame the Filipinos for our situation as the host country opened the door wide without taking into the considerations of its impact over the years. We have our needs, so do our friends in Philippines.

With this, i hope both sides will recognize and accept the flaws we have and start viewing the core issues at hand…. and hopefully one day, both sides will be able to correct the mistakes that put us in this predicament, that is the day for cheers for both Singapore and The Philippines.

Or you can also go make a sign up campaign and complain to whoever governs the employment field in your country to prevent us from getting hired in your country. Let’s see what happens 🙂

or maybe… could it be that you’re just bitter of not being hired in the past over a filipino because of your accent? guess what, US peeps would prefer the way Filipino’s speak English, than the random “lah” you have, which will make any American wonder, what did he just say? what “lah”?

    lol.

This is exactly what this letter is all about. Racism is so last 5 decades ago or something, you need to catch up and learn what being progressive is all about. Of course, you’re entitled to your own opinion, but don’t expect anyone educated to listen to you if all you’re going to do is badmouth certain races and not present your points in a respectful, well-thought out way.

Also, it is interesting to note how you seem to talk down to Filipinos in this message, and how the way you write your words make it very evident that you consider yourself quite higher than people from Vietnam and Myanmar.

How terrible. I wonder how your Filipino friend feels about your mud-slinging and rudeness towards people of his own race. I hope he stops talking to you completely.

    Greetings,
I believe I have to comment on every paragraph you wrote.

    For paragraph # 1:

Using the “Angus Ross Literature prize” as an international benchmark for English proficiency is a stupid standard , id it’s just an international standard developed in a small portion of your narrow imagination. English proficiency should be based on four factors namely speaking, reading, listening and writing. The Angus Ross prize is a “literature” prize, a competition of “written works” and does not exhibit all the four elements involved in the IELTS (speaking, listening, writing and reading). If you base English proficiency on studies conducted by Global English Corporation or maybe on some web articles from Forbes magazine (http://www.forbes.com/sites/kenrapoza/2012/04/05/countries-with-the-best-business-english/). You will clearly see the opposite of what you have written.

    For paragraph # 2:

It is true that people yak away with his or her own opinions on local municipal issues, but I’m glad they can do that in the Philippines. In Singapore people are afraid to speak up and share their opinion to the public because everything is controlled by the government. No wonder there’s no Big Brother version in Singapore because if somebody talk shit about the public, they cannot edit the show anymore…

    For paragraph #3:

Before you talk about other politicians, be sure you know much about your politicians. And you talked about prostitutes? How about Geylang? And drug issues? Can you prove to the world that there’s no drug issues in your country?

    For paragraph # 4:

Abuse??? Just a few days ago a Singaporean woman punches an old Singaporean lady at kopitiam for being slow. “Everyday Singapore life”… What happened to “manners”. Just now I check the article online… It’s gone… Probably filtered out to protect an image. And again, before talking about other politicians, make sure you yours very well..

    For paragraph # 5:

I hope you have an idea what “gracious” really is….

    Conclusion:

    You are a total RACIST!…

  112. Better English and better governance are two different things. Don’t get them mixed up. We Filipinos, at least the ones who are fortunate enough to have received a decent education, have much better English ability then a well educated Singaporean. Generalizing Filipinos based on the limited encounters that you had with the Filipinos in Singapore is such as shallow thing to do. We are aware that not all Filipinos are disciplined and well-mannered, but that doesn’t mean that ALL Filipinos are like that. You criticize the manner wherein we speak using the English language based on the encounters you had with housemaids and you assumed that all Filipinos are incapable of speaking proper English. I have been in Singapore and I have also met a lot of Singaporeans here in Malaysia, the Singaporeans that I have met here does not have menial jobs, they are in Sales & Marketing and yet their accent is as horrendous as the accent of the Filipino housemaids that you were insulting. What I’m trying to say is that not all Filipinos lack the skills in conversing using the English language, just as not all Singaporeans are as good as you want yourself to believe.

You were bragging that Singaporeans always win the Angus Ross Literature prize, and as you have said, it is the benchmark for ‘A’ levels. Is this your basis for thinking that Singaporeans are far more superior than us when it comes to speaking in English? Well, if that is the case then maybe you should visit http://www.globalenglish.com/whoweare/newsroom/press_releases/757 and look for the sub-title “Struggling, Fast-Growth and BRIC Economies at a Disadvantage “. You will see in that article that Philippines is number one when it comes to Business English proficiency and Singapore did not even made it to top five.

All I’m saying is do not generalize us based on the bad experiences you had with some of the Filipinos in Singapore because we do not generalize Singaporeans based on our bad experiences with them.

  123. prideinstride said

People’s attitude and does not describe the rest of a nation more than that of the people living in it. We can criticise each other but then again, we need to be very careful on how we say things and voice out our opinions. Having one bad experience with one group of people does not mean their race culture and their nationality are all the same. Think about it this way, there are good in each person, whether they are black white, brown, or whatever colour or language they speak. Why can’t we just have those traits talk about instead of putting them down.

Writing this articles does not convince you and the people you know that Filipinos are indeed back stabbers, just because writing this proves you are doing so as well. We may be a race of cheap labour, but that does not define us a people with bad hearts and intention. We take pride in doing jobs that other people see as below their station or stature. We take care of your children while you work, We take care of your elderly parents as you do not have the time and energy to do so. We clean your houses as you pay as to do so, the reason are all the same for each individual doing such jobs. To help their families back home earn a living and support their needs. So think before you speak. My parents told me, that if you have nothing good to say then just hold back.

Thank you as well, for writing this article, as this will certainly be another call to Filipinos out there that sometime we forget who we are. But people like you remind us that we are indeed good people even if you take everything bad and put us down.

  124. Not the condescending author said

I believe the writer has some lapse in the accepted definition of RESPECT.

  125. Rej said

What exactly is your purpose in writing this article?

Will demeaning Filipinos working in Singapore make you feel good about yourself? It’s a pity that you seem to have not enjoyed your stay in the Philippines many years back. But I don’t think that you are in a position to make conclusions based on your very limited exposure to the country…or obviously very limited knowledge of it.

You cannot even highlight your strength’s to justify why it’s unnecessary, for companies in Singapore, to keep hiring Filipinos instead of locals like you. You resort to something so pathetic as putting others down just so you can feel superior over others or feel good about yourself. You can only assert that FTs from other countries like Myanmar and Vietnam may soon replace the Filipinos here. So what difference will that make? You still cannot convince employers to hire locals like you instead of the FTs. Why so scared of the Filipinos’ presence in Singapore? Why do you seem to approve of FTs from Myanmar or Vietnam working in SG but not the Filipinos?

I have many Singaporean friends and colleagues that I respect and hold high regard for. They do not seem to be as close-minded as you are with regard to the presence of Filipino Talents here. How about- maybe because they are confident about themselves that no FT can pose a threat to their position in this society?

Besides, who is a real Singaporean? Most here being third generation citizens who are mere descendants of the early immigrants that came to this tiny but special country in the 19th and early 20th century (early FTs I suppose).

Lastly, everything is all in the mind. The thing is: if we smile, you will assume that it’s fake and scheming…but if we don’t- we are arrogant. No matter what we do is bound to displease you.

Maybe it would be easier for all of us to co-exist if we learn the basic rule of respect for each other including each other’s cultural quirks and differences.

“IF YOU HATE [A PERSON], YOU HATE SOMETHING [IN HIM] THAT IS PART OF YOURSELF. WHAT ISN’T PART OF OURSELVES DOESN’T DISTURB US”

  127. stokedtraveler said

wow I never expected to come across such an article from a singaporean against the Filipino race. Let me point out my comment on some concerns the author had on Pinoys:

    1. English Proficiency – read this article: http://www.globalenglish.com/whoweare/newsroom/press_releases/757

Philippines and Norway are the only two countries that met the acceptable level of business standard. It is good that singaporeans were also ranked as 9th place amongst all the countries.

    10 Best Countries:
    Philippines
    Norway
    Serbia
    Slovenia
    Australia
    Malaysia
    India
    Lithuania
    Singapore
    Canada

    2. Low wage workers – yes Filipinos get lower salaries than Singaporeans. Blame it on both governments – not the people. Philippines has some ways to go as far as politics and improving the standard of living. Until then most of those looking for higher compensation will look for work abroad. Singapore on the otherhand has built such a high standard of living and salaries/wages that multinational companies located there find it hard to have a balance betweenn CAPEX and OPEX. Imagine, what would happen to Singaporean economy if multinational corporations moved their investment to the source of their workforce — say the Philippines? What would happen to some Singaporean families if they’d have to stay at home to watch the kids instead of work because there are no helpers of other nationalities because local helpers are all too expensive?

    3. Economy — Singapore is not as different as the Philippines. The economic boom you are experiencing is because of the industry of people (workforce) and the government policies on global investors. Both these come be recovered in time by the Philippines (was already achieved by the Philippines back in the period before the 80’s). However, your country lack a lot of natural resources that the philippines has abundance of. Singapore is in fact even sharing land with a neighbor country.

    4. Race — if you have studied our history, you’ll learn that we all come from the same race. asians have migrated to various islands and mixed with westernerns until they were able to create their physical identity and language. In the more recent history, Singaporeans are not a unique pure-bred race too. Actually other than the political separation, Singapore is as much as Malaysians — just like Filipinos.

I have to understand that the hatred is coming from the fact that migratory workers are taking away jobs from the locals. Some Filipino businessmen feel the same towards other races putting up large businesses in the Philippines thus killing small home-made businesses by locals. It is normal and blame it on globalization.

If you’d like to keep out Foreign workers and tourists then have your government apply a closed door policy like what China did for a long time. Only, China was successful because they had the land mass, the workforce and all the natural resources they need. Singapore only has a small workforce and a piece of land no bigger than the biggest cities in the Philippines. Filipinos will then still be globally marketable as skilled and professional workers elsewhere because of their education and attitude.

I still love my chinese kin but it is sad that there are those that are too traditional to accept that cultures will merge as an effect of true globalization. Racism and prejudice will always exist but can always be settled with real understanding of one another. Not all Filipinos are blindly patriotic and so are Singaporeans. The better ones are those that understand that instead of blaming others, they have to build themselves to be globally competitive in a global market place (not on a silo-scale industry)

Singapore as we all know is a little country in south east asia with so little work force and population that 2/3rds of their current population are foreign workers THEY ACTUALLY SEEK to work for them. and as we all know, Singaporeans tolerated their colonial masters because they’re complacent with the “economic status” and “national stability” unlike the Filipinos who actually overthrew their colonial masters to rule on their own. ONLY FILIPINOS HAVE THE AUDACITY TO BE FREE BECAUSE WE KNOW WE ARE CAPABLE AND WE DO NOT RELY MUCH ON FOREIGN AID… so next time, before publishing anything like this, make sure you know who you’re writing with and who you’re writing for… lack of writers who would win your literary price doesn’t reflect the state of the country… YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON BEHIND CLOSE DOORS ok? I hope I enlightened everyone who would look down on others… the real intelligent people would not do this… it’s pathetic to seek attention by destroying someone else’s reputation and seeking refuge with other pathetic people…

PAP opened the gates because of fellow lazy, arrogant Singaporean workers.

Then let’s have arrogant but hard working foreigners instead to make our country prosper. Better that way.

My countrymen who work hard never complain because we have more than what the foreigners have.

You just have to work hard and think smart. Else you will be left behind by other Singaporeans and unfortunately, also by foreigners.

See the average young man and woman in Singapore, what is the average age where they achieved their Degree certificate?

Other countries can do it by an age of 20. And they are able to be accepted by companies to handle higher responsibility and decision making at the younger age and obtained experiences.

I think the government is doing a great job here in Singapore; ulitmately we still need economic growth, we cannot be satisfied, once we are satisfied we will failed, and economic growth means more FT, because Singaporean cannot make it grow and could not even sustain the birth rate, furthermore most of the young men still need to serve the national service.

See we are fit man! And FT loves us. Song bo, we are born in a surplus nation, now my HDB worth 400k divide by my family members of 4 = 100k EPS. Good or not ! Born to be rich and I will veture overseas to be a venture

I thought we Asians were better than all this racism and prejudice. But I guess I was wrong 😦 I don’t think there is a race that is superior, after all, we are all humans. Our countries all have imperfections may it be big or small, we still are innately proud of our motherland. Why should English be the measure of the better person? The better person would always be the one who respects others and begets respect as well… But I guess such people do not exist anymore 😦

  145. The Human Race said

Of course it’s racism you numbnut. To blatantly express that Singaporean society is being degraded by \”selfish, crude and uncivilised foreigners” without taking into consideration that there are countless locals who are also \”selfish, crude and uncivilised\”, is racism point blank. As far as I\’m concerned, whether you\’re Singaporean, Filipino, Chinese, Malay or whatever, as long as you\’re freaking human, then we are all the same. Racism is a product of discrimination and prejudice, it should have no place in your life. Don\’t hate!

And don\’t make this a debate about who speaks the best English. To my knowledge, not even the predominantly English-speaking nationalities speak perfect English — Americans included. Everyone has their own flaws, some more pronounced than others. Stop the racial bashing and just learn to accept what\’s good about a particular race, whether it be Filipinos or any non-Singaporean. I\’m sure Filipinos are great too, you just have to learn to get along with them. It doesn\’t matter where you come from, or what color skin you have, everyone is made of the same thing.

If a Singaporean comes over to the Philippines, you will be a freaking king there. Not because of your money, or your social status, or anything trivial. It\’s because we are friendly people and we genuinely want to have a drink with you, laugh and tell jokes and whatever. Have you ever heard of Filipino hospitality? It\’s world famous.

Seriously, whoever posted idiotic, racist comments on this thread should be ashamed of themselves. LOL. Let\’s hope not every Singaporean thinks like you guys. I prefer to think there are some good ones out there.

Aside from Singapore, Japan, Dubai, Saudi, and other Middle Eastern countries are the most common work destination of FIlipinos. We go there because it is more economically beneificial for us than working at home. We are grateful to these countries for making it possible for us to have better economic means. In return we provide the brawn and brain as these countries modernize/develop or maintain the status quo.

It is a win-win situation. We supply what Singapore and other countries do not have in return for something that we cannot easily obtain at home. There is no shame in looking for the proverbial greener pasture. In fact, it is the wise thing to do.

In a country like Singapore, it is almost impossible to just walk in and get a job. One has to have the right qualifications and experience, or at the very least, the willingness to perform a job considered beneath the station of an average Singaporean.

The Singaporean government gave the blessing to FIlipinos (and other nationalities) to keep working there. It is safe to assume that this is because the native workforce cannot cope with the demands of the country’s growth. This is a simple supply-demand situation, no more no less. If tomorrow you Singaporeans suddenly find yourselves having enough native workforce, then this supply-demand law will take care of the Filipinos’ supposedly unwelcome proliferation in Singapore more effectively and outrightly than this cheap racist slur.

But first, Singapore, you have to gear up and breed more, or at least be willing to perform household chores.

Having been posted overseas (and working with expatriates from practically all nations) has completely banished my “scorn” for funny English grammar and accent. I am embarrassed to admit that I used to hate the Singaporean sing-song accent; I also do not like the Filipino stiff-toned English; I laugh at the shrunk-tongued Indian speech; I dislike the guttural Germanic utterance of the English language; I find the hill-billy twang too uneducated; I find unromantic the Latino version of English . . . I have worked with all sorts of accents but at the end of the day we get the work done and the cacophony of the rhytms and trills of the English language as it is spoken internationally all seem to make sense.

To recap the main points: 1) Filipinos are in Singapore because of a mutual need, and 2) English is an international language and is spoken in more manners than there are nations.

Ergo: the writer of this blog should work at building his native workforce and he should get out of SIngapore more often and sample the countless versions of the spoken English language.

    Peace and light!

To all my fellow countrymen (pinoys) and to the rest of the posters on the Temasek Times, I have read all of your comments and arguments grilling each other on who has a better or greater command of English. I have read a lot of racist, derogatory and demeaning comments from both parties and I must say that neither party have been astute enough to bite their tongue and just shut their mouth.
To my fellow countrymen here in Singapore, I know how it feels to be judged, discriminated, bullied and belittled by people like Mr Lai, but we are better than this.
I am proud to be a Filipino and I show it through my work and the way I talk to people. We as Filipinos and as a country have been through a lot trials. People from the outside looking in will always judge us Filipinos by the ways our leaders have acted and by the attitude and demeanor of our countrymen who represents us and work in various countries, companies and positions. We all get mad at the people who talk smack about the Philippines but never consider as to why they do. We always tell them to look in the mirror before they open their mouths but have we also looked at Mirror? Are you proud of what you see or do some of the comments that people from the forum hold true? Whether you are in Singapore as a Maid, an Engineer, an Architect, an IT personnel or just on vacation know that you are a representative of our country.
If we really are to say we are proud Filipinos then we should act honorably, distinguishingly and be ambassadors for our country. STAND TALL, HOLD YOUR HEAD UP HIGH and BE PROUD there is not a need to stoop down to the level of the poster. Take the higher ground and know that you are here in Singapore because you have earned your right to be here. It is neither your proper diction nor your proper intonation of the English language that got you to where you are now. It is by the grace of God and your ability to use what was given to you that got you here. You and I have no right to bash their “lovely” opinions about us. Do not get me wrong though I am not okay with what was posted and in actuality I was a bit hurt but it is only an opinion of one person and the rest a lot of racist remarks and stereotyping. We are made with thicker skin than that aren’t we not. Don’t throw away your morals, dignity and pride just to strike back.
The time to shine as country, as Filipinos and as citizens of this Earth is NOW. Let’s show them why “IT’S MORE FUN IN THE PHILIPPINES”.

    Greetings,

I believe I have to comment on every paragraph you wrote.

    For paragraph # 1:

Using the “Angus Ross Literature prize” as an international benchmark for English proficiency is a stupid standard , it’s just an international standard developed in a small portion of your narrow imagination.

Those that you saw in those shopping Centers are Domestic Workers who are not as good as those highly educated ones.

How can u judge them according to your narrow mind and give them names?
And do not use the word “pinoy”, as it is a crude word for anyone of them.

Look yourself at the mirror before u judge, and for god sake, do something more productive than trying to flame the whole world to go against u TT.

Despite the obvious discrimination this writer has written about Filipinos, can the Filipinos really disagree with what was said? Filipinos do tend to bring each other down. From what I’ve seen, it already starts at childhood where children are pointing out differences bluntly towards each other. As for the politics.. Filipinos would have a better govt IF there were BETTER people running it. The English? I, myself, do not understand why SOME (not all, mind you) Filipinos have to add slang. It doesn’t sound proper and to agree with the article, a bit pretentious. Besides that, all countries have their faults or weaknesses. To the author, if Singaporeans are oh so humble then maybe you should’ve showed that when writing your opinions.

Wonder how creatures from a shabby country that can’t even get anything right can think they are better than humans in Singapore?

Not forgetting too the humiliation of having tonnes of bananas and mangoes being wasted in the customs of China, and yet, they can’t do anything to address the Chinese actions…they again did not bark!

Or how their “highly talented” police commandos try to defuse a hostage situation with their “highly talented” maneuvers that only kill 7 hostages (at least not all), and was an overnight sensation globally where people get to see their “talents” in a different perspectives!

Of course, they also have a “highly talented” president who have such heart to even smile when making an official statement over the outcome of the hostage situation…and what kind of creatures will elect such a president?

Indeed, Singaporean are not as talented as pinoys when shitting through mouth is concerned…humans have only one arse hole…but creatures from philippines have two, one at the bottom, the other right up in the head…that’s why they can go round shitting everywhere and at anytime!

It is good to have such creatures here in Singapore, so that Singaporeans can get some consolation that at least, they are still consider human beings, as opposed to being a creature. So, treasure your status, fellow Singaporeans!

The answer ? I also don’t know., no one knows., 🙂 so we should stop this fight and make ourself a good product of our own nation.,.

        🙂

  183. […] Heto ang link sa buong mensahe: A Singaporean’s Observation of Filipinos […]

  184. ok let me say something to defend why some of us Singaporeans think this way.
PINOYS, imagine now its the opposite….. your country are number one in asia and we are the poorest.Your government decide to let in millions of Singaporeans to take over every sector of your jobs…. everywhere you can see Singaporeans taking away your jobs.
Ok, and we talk sooo loud infront of you.We celebrate our national day right infront of your doorstep.
We dont hang around with you guys, but form a group together.

Now, what will you do???Complain like what we did now???Scold the government???And now you be telling us heh SIngaporean pest, get your butts out of our country.Dont come and take our jobs.

What will you feel if we tell u straight in your face, heh we help build up your economic, if without us, ur country economic will die.
We look after your kids.If without us, your lazy woman will not be able to work and will affect the economic.
We are the real professional and you guys just not able to fight with us over the jobs and thats why your government so look high on us.

Now, PInoys, just be frank here… and tell us… what will you be feeling???

If you can understand that, you will understand why some of them are feeling this way.Especially with some facebook comments by some of your Pinoys friends scolding Singaporean girls stupid… cannot look after child.. and so on!!!

Well, just think about it, so far until now, did you guys met any nasty Singaporeans scold at you to go back to your homeland???Any nasty Singaporeans shout at you… heh fark off Pinoys.Or talk nasty racist remarks at you guys???Tell me frankly.. yes or no???

Singaporeans already been very very kind here.Allow so many of you in and work to earn a decent living to send back home. Some like what i said just now, they felt threaten and decide to be a keyboard warrior to voice out their anger at the government for letting in so many FT.

We are all Asians. And the more we need to respect each other and unite each other for the best interest of South East Asia. Not fighting and scolding each other.

I respect some of the Pinoys for being hardworking and not getting into any trouble with the law here. But i do saw some of the nasty one acting like hooligan.Same as us Singaporeasn, be it Malay or Chinese. We do have hooligans too.So, its back to sqaure one.Don’t point at others if you yourself also have the same problem.I refer to every race as well!

No one own anyone here. You guys(Pinoys and all FT) are not taking salary for free. So, to those who like to say, we Singaporeans give you job and be grateful… well guys, they dont work for free too.

And to those Pinoys who like to think as if Singapore need the Pinoys or else we will suffer in our nation building… do take note too.
do some history research, and check who are the real maker of Singaore before and now.

if u say contribute … yes i will agree.if you want to say we are the professionals and we need you… well better do some research and thinking before you guys make this comments. It will make you guys look shame.

Last but not least, Singapore is a tiny country. Its a fact. So, go ahead and say that to us cos its a fact.
But just a reminder too, a tiny nation without any natural resources like you guys have, and can be Asia number one the financial sector…something we must have done right to earn it.So its fact and accept it.
If Singaporeans are racist, then how about try go to some part of USA where the whites totally look down on Asians???You can talk good english, but these racist whites will look at you as Asian yellow skin.

Respect each other and there will be world and racial peace.

actually, FT’s are just taking the jobs that YOU guys don’t want to take. so there’s no point in getting jealous. would you work as a maid? would you work in KFC or in cheers as a cashier? Your government is controlling it anyways. If they see that the job the FT is applying for is more for the local crowd, they don’t grant them the pass to work. I think the writer of this article is just doing what Singaporeans do best – COMPLAIN!

I say and repeat again: Pinoys at all levels of society are highly opinionated. This could be due to their political culture: flag bearing, breasts beating, hysteria, mobbish show of sound and fury signifying nothing. Just look at their domestic politics: senator said this, judge overruled, police chief intervened and finally prisoner sent to live in “prison” with favoured amenities. If I am a Pinoy, I will feel so ashamed in the ineptness of my country. Fortunately I am Singaporean and we have to guard ourselves against the subtle and not-so-subtle infiltration of this foreign sick man of Asia citizens from being emboldened here. Majulah Singapore!!!

A wonderful manifestation of cultures and languages integration. Similarly, you have your Taglish too. Although it is developed largely due to a vocabulary issue, I won’t ever condemn it. Perhaps you should learn from Openurminds. Try to get along and be happy. Cheers

I don’t see what the issue is here. The man gave his opinion on what his senses has perceived about Filipinos. Why the hate people?

Would it be possible, that the reason a huge majority of you are ranting is because somehow, the truth hurts? It seems to me that a lot of the reactions here indicate just that.

The author never stated that all Filipinos are alike, perhaps he just wanted to point out his observation that most of us are.

Common guys. Show to the world that we’re better than this. This is the author’s humble opinion. Instead of bashing him with insults, why don’t we consider what he said and work on our weaknesses. Only when we learn to accept the reality of things will we begin to grow.

I am a filipino proud to work in the call center industry and has spoken to millions of americans and canadians. Even their native tongues have grammatical slips. Cant even spell simple english words. Some americans are hard to understand as well bec of their southern accent. Ive seen one reality show in britain, they have to subtitle the show so it can be understood. My point is even the native english speaking countries arent perfect with their own language, how can filipinos or singaporeans be?

An article a few people I know have come across and sent to me to read. I knew immediately I would have an opinion because of the words “Singaporean” and “Filipino”, myself identifying with both countries and calling both places home.

Upon reading it, I felt outraged and incredibly hurt at all the accusations and sweeping generalisations the author made, especially when I have been told the opposite of what he accuses Filipinos of being. I have heard many, not just Singaporeans, say they think we are a lively, hospitable bunch with a more than decent standard of English, among other things. And I pride myself on retaining that aspect of being a full-blooded Filipino, despite only being in the motherland for 2 to 3 months a year.

However I am also proud of having grown up in one of the safest countries in the world, and receiving a normal, local education. I know that it is the Singaporean mindset that keeps pushing me to do better academically, but my Filipino upbringing that tells me I need to give back to society. This mentality will not only apply to Filipinos/Singaporeans; I’m just saying that considering myself to be both a Filipino and a Singaporean helps so much in life.

I have travelled to many regions, I have met people of many different races and religions, and I know that no one has a perfect country. I have seen much and learnt that tolerance, empathy, and understanding are all key elements in ensuring you get the best out of however many worlds you’ve lived in. There are many things I dislike about Singapore AND the Philippines, but there are also many many things I love about both. You can’t have it all, and neither can a single country. What one country lacks, it borrows or buys from another. That’s business, that’s politics, and countries around the world are ALL doing it.

Also, English proficiency is hardly something to be fighting over. I have witnessed many people of many races struggle with English. And English itself is a borrowed language, with words rooted in French, Spanish, Italian, Latin, etc etc and the list goes on. The global development of the world as a whole has resulted in the inevitable borrowing of cultures from country to country. Children in Singapore can watch British cartoons. Children in the Philippines can learn Spanish in school. Botj countries have access to the same satellite/cable TV channels, as do many countries around the world. It’s the power of technology and the Internet! (And yes, I learnt that in Social Studies, a subject taught in local Singaporean schools. However I have discussed this “phenomenon” with friends from around the world. This subject matter isn’t just a Singaporean mindset, it’s a global issue.)

I am sure many Singaporeans would disagree with this man, but I’m also sure many Filipinos would secretly admit to the work-ethics or whatever other accusations there are. However, the faults he has pointed out are definitely not just “Filipino” in general, but human through and through. He could have pointed these things out, but it is hardly fair of him to generalise it as a Filipino fault. That would be the racism.

One guy’s narrow-minded opinion has sparked off such a crazy debate in the comments, where the words thrown around are more hurtful than the article itself. But moreover a journalism website has no grasp over the concept of “responsible journalism”. If I knew for a fact the government would do something about this irresponsibility and blatant racism, I have half the mind to write a letter in myself. However these cases are rampant and even more so in a multiracial country like this. The laws that stood against racism are having a hard time catching all the culprits. I would like to think the unhappy commenters and the writer himself are still the minority of what I feel are both very global countries, in their own special way.

As a side note, if we are to argue about stupidity, it is not a racial problem so much as an individual problem. I hear a certain Amanda believes Singapore is in Europe and that Canada is a religion, but I certainly don’t see the rest of America thinking the same way.

Maybe we should take time to think it over and ponder on these words I’ve read somewhere: “Another form of wastefulness is the expenditure of words beyond the income of ideas”

and these things i will write here down are not only saved in my mind from my womans shit pinay doings.
    1. pinoys generalize all…critics they cant hear…result will be that they call u rude or they ignore it simply
    2. if u dont stopp to serve a constructive critics they start fast to cry like a small girl
    3. Answer will be by them when u ask WHY do u cry right now about a normal critics ” uve touched my human beeing and my pride ”
    4. this kind of answers are extremly egoistic and have a touch of stupid arrogance in it
    5. they believe god will rule their life for them…yes i believe also in god but i believe also its a bad sin to ask only god for help without to use my own brain
    6. if ur talking to them about money they note fast what profit is for them to reach
    7. They have a fucked up mentality which is caused by many generations and the biggest prob is for them that they dont note it on their own that they look not only like
airheads that they have also actions like airheads.

I am saying these things as fuckin longnose western which is not in the age like grandfa and wants to go to asia for a nice fuck toy.

Ive lived in many places already in south america, america , europe but the mentality of a pinoy is extremly strange …. i did ask my woman one day….after another arrogance attack by her…TELL ME NOW what rights do u have to be arrogant ????? tell it to me right now ! arrogant you can be when ur bank account has 1 mio USD in plus.
So what ? Answer it with ur nice pinoy pride where u cheat to urself ur the best human on earth but the truth is that ur only a weak small creature which doesnt know where is left and right compared with a anyoing arrogance .

Answer by her” U look down to me and judge me ”
Thats a typical pinoy answer with no brain inside it…..and so did my woman not only answer when it comes wind in the pinoy face…so answer near all pinoys .
I hate you pinoys of course not and i dont care if ur pinoy, arab or any other but i am saying also here now…u pinoys come clear ground urself fast fast down to the earth and u will earn one day real pride and not a childish pride where u even dont know why u have it…..correct me pls if i am telling here not the truth but view urselfs all well as pinoys.

English is not my ain language so expect that i have mistakes in my comment thx and bye

You can not simply have a sweeping generalization of Filipinos – it’s 18x larger than Singapore and a country 90 Million people strong. 🙂

The behavior of Filipinos varies from where they are from, social class, race and background.

Manileños (people born, raised and educated in Manila) are quite different vs those from the provinces. They are more self-assured, assertive, better educated, and would typically come from relatively more middle to upper class family (read = people who also hire maids). They have relatively larger egos that would probably rub some Singaporeans quite strongly. Chances are they can also do head on debate with you in straight English.

This is true as well for people from the provinces that come from relatively more affluent families and have studied in institutions in Manila.

Chances are these people from the higher classes in Filipino society are what Singaporeans are now having a chance to interact with vs years ago. As Singapore position itself as a regional hub in Asia, it’s inevitable for Singaporeans to face the most elitist spoiled brats from all over Southeast Asia. 😉

Oh and those who party in Orchard, don’t worry, you’re not alone… chances are the elitist Filipinos would be annoyed of them too.

I agree with you ManilaBoy that no one should have a sweeping generalization of Filipinos or any nationality.

And besides, there are also Filipinos who don’t go to Singapore to work but to shop or simply visit, and not to work. I encountered rude Singaporeans, Filipinos and people from other countries before as well. We should all accept that people aren’t the same and there are good and bad people everywhere.

I just want to add my two cents here, it used to be, when people from less-developed countries tried to make a living in first world countries, it wasn’t so easy. So when they really had the chance, they didn’t take it for granted. They were usually the best of the bunch, and they were serious about their work, about making it in the big city. But nowadays, as demand on cheap labors rises, people could find jobs in first world countries relatively easier, and they’d come out in droves so the socio-cultural impact is more noticeable compared to years ago.

From my observation, Filipinos and PRC are the majority in the FT pool, so by mathematical alone, it’s understandable you are bound to come across unfavorable Filipinos and PRC more than any other nationalities. These unfavorable characters can really do a number on you and when people are frustrated, they tend to attack obvious physical / visible traits as an easy way out.

That being said, I need to vent out my frustration over some Filipinos I’ve met here whom I think are only riding on the coattails of their good predecessors. However, this is not unique to Filipinos, sometimes I think Filipinos are just unfortunate to be an easy target for blame, IMHO.

  208. Ryu said

Their stupidity can only be matched by their ignorance for many Filipino who are trying desperately to fool themself and others by saying that the horrible English they are learning/using there, and the political/cultural cancers are not that bad. Philippines will likely never become a first world country.

Wow this is a great article that showcase a lot of real thoughts here of the pinoys. I am a true blue Singaporean but I was treated as a second class citizen in my own country by this ‘service staff’ pinoys. They are very irritating in public, speaking loudly trying to ‘slang’ which makes it really hard to understand them. They try so hard to please the Caucasians here and look down on the locals but this is our country and they need to learn to respect the locals. As the saying goes:’ when you’re in Rome, do what the Romans do.’ The whole Singapore seems tp be overtaken by the pinoys. Totally agree when these pinoys need favor from you, they’ be ‘nice’ to you. Once they’ve achieved their goals, they’ll cast you out like a dirty rag! That makes me wonder what’s Singapore going to be in 10-20 years time with this kind of breed among us. Singapore being used n spit out n discarded? A question to ponder for a lot of us.
