A Singaporean’s observation of Filipinos

A point to bring out: what mastery of English language these pinoys have? zilch if we take the international benchmark of the Angus Ross Literature prize which is almost annually won by a Singaporean since its inception. The Angus Ross prize is recognization of the best literature paper in “A” levels outside UK.
I have lived in their country more than 25 years ago, It struck me then when I was watching their daily tv channels which were predominantly about this person yakking away with his or her own opinions in some local municipal issues. Full of rah rah but no substance. To take the cake, my pinoy friend who is a doctor there passed this remark “Fiilipinos all want to be leaders.” Where are the followers? All talk and no action.
Looking at their poilitical leaders’ behaviour is a ghastly exercise of megalomaniac and ineptness. Estrada, Aquino, Marcoses were leechers to their own country with playboy attitude and cowboy rules. I once passed Baguio there and the whole place gave ma a creep – it was dark, alleys with prostitutes, drug addicts openly shooting pots.
My observation of pinoys here in Singapore is not favourable either. I have seen maids abusing little children by literally dragging the tiny tots while yakking on the phone, infesting the shopping centres with their irritating English slang and tagalog which sounded more like chickens and ducks talking. They are supeficial people in the corporate world, smiling fakely but with a dagger behind – just look at their politicians and political culture which affirm this culturally imbibed trait.
Now the pinoys are so emboldened thinking a pax-filipino can be entrenched here in Singapore. Look Pinoys! We Singaporeans are gracious and to a large extent our government policies welcome FT or the other FT*****. This is by no means you can shit and feel arrogant here. As pointed out, Vietnam and Mymmar are catching up and we can look to them as alternative source of labour. In addition, they seem more refined and gracious in their mannerisms.

Pinoys are here because they are cheap. Employers can get them for less than 1.5k per month for graduates. Local ones starts from 2.3K. So as long they are cheap, they will be here. Those 60% who still believe that they are talents are either daft or in the civil service.
Vietnam and Myanmmar need to be politically stable and be able to speak English before they can be seen as competitors to the pinoys. When I say English, it is not the standard one. One just have to talk with a pinoy to see what standard we are looking. It is very very basic English, akin to A,B and C.
End of the day. if an employer can get an American at 1.5K, he or she will get the job. Quality? Bullshit.

Kayle: you are stupid. “Talk to” and “talk with” are the same. In some circles, “talk to” is even considered rude, like you are talking down to someone of lower rank. Talk “with” implies you’re on the same level. The difference mainly lies in US and British usage. Nagmamagaling ka pang epal ka eh, kung alam ko lang Bisaya accent ka rin.

Wow Chris St.! It only needs another pinoy to bad mouth a pinoy. This is exactly why our country (Philippines) is doomed. So what if one has a bisayan accent? Do you think the Tagalog accent sounds better? In my opinion, I completely agree with Jardel said except about the American part. Work quality is more of a personal aspect rather than a race aspect. Some people just suck at what they do.
As for the author of this article, anyone listening to a language that one doesn’t know would be like listening to ducks and chickens, maybe except for the french though, they sound nice even if you don’t understand anything.

I think the Singapore has made a mistake allowing a Pinoy community to take root here. We have to learn a thing or two about how Pinoys behave. In the US for eg, if you employ a Pinoy, he brings in his family; and the family in turn bring in others of the compareys – those related not necessarily by blood but by ties of kinship made through say being a god parent of a child. If you have a Pinoy in your department, very soon it growns to two, then more; eventually a small Pinoy community emerges. If the Manager is say an American, they will “manage him out” and put one of their kind in; and they’ll proliferate and then pressure the system to do things in their favour. Smart as our leaders are, they are not so street smart against the Pinoy who can overthrow a legitimately installed government with “people’s power” Has the Philippines improved since? No. Still in the rut, because people who destabliise will go on destablishing because there are people who thrive in this environment to make good money, to enjoy some days off to protest. Pinoys are tardy. Sad to say most of the late comers in Church are Pinoy. You will find this tardiness in Singapore too. Thye will blame the traffic, the MRT breakdowns, etc. Good luck Singapore.

Those who came as maid did not bring along their friends and relatives. Those on employment passes do.
Contrary to what some think, their graduates are not that cheap because the educational system turn out so many graduates and accountants, but they can’t practise back home because of a system of board exams to sieve them out. So many who come here are may not be of the calibre acceptable even back in the Philippines.
What I am trying to warn here is this – be prepared for more following one, taxing our system to a point we can’t cope.

In the many times I’ve been here, I haven’t really experienced any raw or intense discrimination because I don’t look, act or speak like your stereotypical Filipino. I look and am often mistaken for a Hong Kong or American Chinese citizen because of my features, light skin, height (I am about 5’8″ tall), size (I am much larger than the average Filipino) and because I write and speak grammatically correct American English with a neutralized accent. If I don’t speak, I am often mistaken for a Singaporean, too.
I hope we can all stop the hatred and discrimination towards each other or towards any other person, race, ethnicity, etc. Don’t we all really just want peace and harmony in the end? I know I do.

Dude how is someone with a Chinese or Indian ancestry going to clown on a Filipino’s accent? Go to any western country and it is Indian and Chinese who is globally considered to have the funniest accents. Not only that Filipinos have the 2nd highest median household income in the United States after Indians. That doesn’t sound like a people who are uneducated and rotten. If anything Filipinos are one of the more well-respected ethnic groups in the US because they come to America already knowing English unlike the Latinos or other ethnic groups.

To heap scorn on Flips as a “prideful bunch” and then later ask “where is their pride” in going abroad to work is contradicting yourself. All I can remember, early 80’s maids and construction workers came to work. helped the SG infrastructure and SG family. Early 90’s Pinoy Engr (PMETs) floods SG. Early to mid 2000 up until now, from hospitality to Managers were filled by them. I respect those early 90’s PMETs, they are the real FT. Wow…very well said. I have one Pinoy here who was just junior. Since he was hired, I taught him some stuffs on the company operation. But his attitude just put me off. Kinda like a spoon fed guy. Nevertheless, he is constantly approach on my managers to talk. Since then he became selected being a team lead. He misused the power by needing that attendance whether we were late and needed to put on capitalized. Besides that, each of the shift patten is having one of their guys around to monitor us. We have Indians here though. From time to time, he will oc these pinoys to get feedback on you. And guess what this team lead even ask the collegue about you and he asked you about your collegue about yout skills in technical. I am a ft as well but we came here just to work. But they came here just to climb about people head. This is really not a good idea to hire pinoys afterall.

Before you base your judgement on a race from a bunch of bad apples to realize that not all Filipinos are such. As long as a bad example is set by one unfortunate Filipino, you immediately group them all into one. Sadly, there are Filipinos who let their pride get to them as you have mentioned and observed (like other people regardless of race who suddenly feel like they are the almighty after reaching a more stable country i.e. USA, Canada). However, there are others, probably the majority, who stay humble, hardworking and unnoticed. Regardless, no one has the right to judge anyone, either parties. Filipinos should watch themselves too before they retaliate. Nevertheless, I hope and look forward to a resolution that would allow both parties to live in Singapore in harmony. Sigh, I really miss that. Having been raised in Singapore for the majority of my life (surprise surprise) I can never just tell anyone I am from my native country, I always have to mention Singapore, and how Singaporean I feel. NONE of them would consider and pursue an A-level certificate because it is not a requirement to obtain higher forms of education — like what they seek in their locals Universities. I guess it would also seem fair if I comment on the negatives–this time towards the writer’s perspectives and/or writing style. For starters, looking at technical errors above anything else, it appears that the writer has adapted to the UK English standard of spelling and sentence constructions (no problem there). I found a lot of grammatical errors and I would love to list ALL of them. On the contrary, I would also like to make my comment as short as possible.

a. “Recognization.”

c. Use of “which” instead of “that”
d. Gracious mannerisms. Surely, you meant manners (malapropism)?

Stereotyping. This has been very common among nations. Whites, blacks, Chinese, Filipinos and heck, Singaporeans, too. We use stereotyping for humor. Apparently, this article is using it to “describe” a nation. For that, we thank you. I agree that some of it are true. Moving on, I listed a few of the concepts that the writer had mistakenly
a. “Filipinos all want to be leaders.” Seriously? Do you have high regards towards your friend or even believe this doctor friend of yours to that extent? All talk, no action–as ridiculous as it may sound, I would beg to differ. You may be right that there are Filipinos who are, indeed, like this, but I personally think that this applies to all nations regardless of culture. To cite an example, look at where US is standing now as far as economy is concerned. Right. All talk, no action.
b. I once passed Baguio there and the whole place gave ma a creep– Apart from the error in the sentence structure and spelling, what the hell are you talking about? I grew up in Baguio and I couldn’t think of an alley with prostitutes, drug addicts “publicly” engaging in pot. Come to think of it, Baguio is recognized as one of the cleanest and safest cities in the Philippines… but sure… why would anyone believe someone who lived in Baguio for more than three decades (sarcasm).
c. Politically speaking, I admit our country has never been at the top of the list. In fact, you may see us at the bottom of the list. Our new government administration is doing its best to get rid of corrupt officials and the president has been doing a good job, so far. This is a slow, working progress so anything you throw at us regarding politics is respected.
d. Vietnam and Myanmar are catching up and we can look to them as alternative source of labor. That’s your opinion and I highly respect it. Letting out strong words such as these give me the impression you are one of your country’s leaders. With the above insights, we humbly thank you for sharing us your thoughts.

Shame on Temasek Times for carrying a racist write-up. It is racist as it harps on the so-called bad characteristics of the Phillipines, their leaders, their way of talking etc. Whatever happens in the Phillipines is their country and their business.
There have been recent angry exchanges and insults hurled in the social media. It is no different than petty quarrels and Singaporeans should not succumb to such petty quarrels and take sides just because we are Singaporeans.
The crux of the matter is that there are too many Filipinos working in the service sector and that is the most prominent area too in terms of interaction with the shopping crowd. Seldom have I read about sending the Filipino maids home. By and large most are well-behaved despite the sacrifices they make.
So, this is an issue that the government needs to address… how to strike a suitable balance. Tell us the quota, tell us what areas they are employed and how are visas issued, etc.

I’m a Filipino. My experience has taught me well not to make prejudices. In the end, i can never judge a person unless i walk a mile in his/her shoes. Prejudice is baseless. It has reaped the lives of many- blacks, gays, jews, etc. all of them were judged and maltreated due to their group/race. they were so wrongly categorized. Now, if you put a Filipino persons in a box, you will miss the chance of knowing their differences and uniqueness.

This post saddens me because instead of trying to get along and understanding each other, people choose to focus on the negative things about other cultures. While it’s true that most Filipinos speak heavily-accented English, doesn’t that also apply to the French, Germans and Singaporeans? I can list more nationalities which don’t quite have mastery of the English language. Since when has mastery of the English language become an indication of intelligence? I live in the US and have met a lot of folks who speak perfect English (them growing up here an all). Frankly, not a lot of them have much substance behind what they say.
I’m not even going to point out all the grammatical and spelling errors in this poorly-written article – I find that a huge waste of time because I understand that English is not the national language in Singapore. It’s simply ignorant to think otherwise. And though I respect freedom of speech and the need to voice out personal opinions, I believe this post is very unhelpful in fostering harmony amongst the Singaporean community.

Look at the Pinoy Land where nuns and priests in their frocks marched in the open to protest. Their brand of Catholicism is a dangerous mix of politics and religion. Can we afford these Pinoys to introduce this brand of street politics here? In one of my trips to a mountain resort from Manila with an over-enthusiastic tour guide giving us tourists a run-down of Marcos govenance instead of a running commentary of the tourist sites along the bus trip. We were entertained for a few hours of local babbling politics. Quite amusing from a Singaporean point of view.
Let me reiterate my stance again: you are our guests to work and live here. Do not try to meddle in our local ways of doing things such as our healthy multireligious and multiracial understanding among Singaporeans. We may not be perfect as a nation or society, but our fore-fathers, our families and our children build Singapore as she is today. It is not charity for you to come here as you seek a better livelihood. Appreciate the door open to you. Hold your head high by earning a decent living and not be swell-headed. I agree on your first and second statement. Filipino politics or governent should be secular. Meaning filipino politician should abide, respect, follow and decide based on the constitution not on their religious belief. I’ve been a victim of reglious self righteousness of this so called christian catholics since I have a different religous belief. But I would never generalize a society that have different views and outlook in life.
Pinoys are opinionated, not all are. I’ve been working in one of the largest Shared oil companies. We know how to respect our team lead. We dine and party wiht our foreign and local bosses but we exercise restraint because we know they hold a position in our office.
I envy your country for having one of biggest economies in Asia and law that is secular and non religious. I am one of the filipinos that want to work and live in Singapore. But one this is for sure, I will go back to my country for the fact that we are more humble and family oriented.

I am appalled by the sheer amount of racism and sweeping generalizations in this article. The Philippines (and Filipinos) have its own share of flaws (e.g. poverty, corruption, lack of law enforcement, etc.) and I am sure Singapore isn’t spotless either (e.g. ageing population, income disparity, etc).
I can hardly consider the Angus Ross Literature prize as the “world standard” in measuring someone’s English ability. That’s what the TOEFL and IELTS are for: a standardized English test that all the world’s universities and companies (read: not just outside but inside the UK, mind you) recognize.
It’s unfortunate that you have witnessed the negative side of living in the Philippines. No country is perfect and I’m sure Singapore has its own social problems. I will not justify your observations about my country as I have seen the other side of living in the island of Singapore that would most definitely not make its way in your state-controlled mainstream media and tourist guides.
I do not judge a whole nation by a small number of its citizens either. Every person is different and I tend to look at the bigger picture in every person I meet.
To wrap things up, you don’t improve the state of your country by stepping upon other nations. I’m sure we all aspire of having the good life someday; we all just differ in the way we achieve it. When you start throwing mud at another person, the people seeing the fight will have a bad taste in his mouth, just like what this article did. Don’t expect the next slew of comments to be quite civil as I admit a number of my fellowmen can get emotional when national pride is at stake. Too bad for the author, we’re actually celebrating our Independence Day today.
At the end of the day, you’ve said your piece but have you actually done something to improve the situation? You don’t like seeing Filipino maids in your HDB flats but your government keeps on encouraging foreign talents to come to Singapore. Admit it or not, you need us as much as we need you. There’s not much work where these maid come from so they have to seek work elsewhere. Just imagine if all the FTs leave Singapore; whose going to man all your shops and do civil service?

I hear your frustrations. And I certainly respect your opinions. As they say, where there’s smoke there’s fire. It seems like many Filipinos I have met so far tend to be lazy and enjoy backstabbing others. Having grown up and educated in the states, I feel ashamed as a Filipino. I was proud to be a filipino until I started hanging out with other filipinos. They only bring you down with them. They destroy each other too. I was hurt when it was done to me. I don’t understand why they do that. They even have a name for it… “crab mentality”. If you take a basket of crabs, and as one of the crabs get to the top of the basket, another crab pulls him down. Not having grown up in Filipino culture, I am still trying to make sense of the behavior.
As much as I want to vent and bad talk them, I’m a firm believer that most people in this world are good. I know we’re both frustrated, and it would be easy just to call them names, blame them, put them back on a boat for Manila, and never see them again. But let’s try to keep an open mind, and look at it at a different angle.
The educated Filipinos don’t come to Singapore to work as maids. The educated ones get jobs or open up businesses. Hence, they never have to leave the country. What Singapore is getting is a batch of Filipinos who have very little education and are willing to take on jobs many of us frown upon. They do this so they can send money back so they can feed their families. It must be hard for them to live in a different country and have to acclimate. LIke most human beings, I am sure many of them would prefer to be with their families in their home country instead. But I’m also aware that this doesn’t excuse their behavior. All I can ask is to try putting yourself in their shoes.
Somehow, I don’t think that all of the blame should be to the leaders of their country. I think it resides in themselves. They need to start taking responsibility – as individuals and as a race.
I admire you for your courage in expressing your opinions. It must have been very hard to have to post this. All I can say is that I’m sorry this happened. Be rest assured that not all Filipinos behave like this. I know many Filipinos are reading this and, hopefully, are doing some introspections. I hope it brings about change – to Filipinos: knowing that they’re getting a bad reputation and should try to bring about change, and to the Non-Filipinos: who will use this to try to be more patient, understand them, and guide them instead of belittling them. I know it won’t be easy. They’re in your country, whether you like it or not. The best thing to do is to lead by example and continue being a role model for them.

heh, of course if you’d make the Angus Ross Prize for Literature as a benchmark, Singaporeans would trounce the Filipinos almost every time. Average Filipinos do not take GCE A-level exams, unless they plan on studying in the UK or its former colonies, and as far as I know, the Angus Ross prize is only awarded to those who took A-level exams.
I don’t know where you get this “Filipinos’ mastery of the English language is zilch” crap, but we do have the best business English in the world, at least according to the GlobalEnglish Corporation’s index (http://ph.news.yahoo.com/ph–world-s-best-country-in-business-english.html). A lot of employers would also love to have Filipinos in their payroll because they can understand Filipino English more than Singaporean English, Chinese English, or even Indian English. Of course, you Singaporeans think your English is better than Filipino English. It’s your “flavor,” anyway. But I’ve worked with a lot of Americans, Brits, and Australians, and they would always say, “I really prefer working with Filipinos. Their accent is easier to understand, compared to the Singaporeans.”

Good folks of both sides. This is a pointless exercise. Singaporeans are no better than Filipinos, neither are we worse off than each other.
The socio-economics, demographics are as diverse between us two countries. However, we do have something in common – that is we are plagued by failed policies that had frustrated many of us. Taking the racist route is by far the coward’s way of viewing the predicaments we faced today. We blame others while glorifying ourselves. Sadly, this seems to be the case here.
We are not pawns or just another statistic. We are decent folks whom just want to have financial stability to take care of our families and maybe vacations thrown in. I do not blame the Filipinos for our situation as the host country opened the door wide without taking into the considerations of its impact over the years. We have our needs, so do our friends in Philippines.

Better English and better governance are two different things. Don’t get them mixed up. We Filipinos, at least the ones who are fortunate enough to have received a decent education, have much better English ability then a well educated Singaporean. We can criticise each other but then again, we need to be very careful on how we say things and voice out our opinions. Having one bad experience with one group of people does not mean their race culture and their nationality are all the same. Will demeaning Filipinos working in Singapore make you feel good about yourself? It’s a pity that you seem to have not enjoyed your stay in the Philippines many years back. You cannot even highlight your strength’s to justify why it’s unnecessary, for companies in Singapore, to keep hiring Filipinos instead of locals like you. You can only assert that FTs from other countries like Myanmar and Vietnam may soon replace the Filipinos here. So what difference will that make? I have many Singaporean friends and colleagues that I respect and hold high regard for. They do not seem to be as close-minded as you are with regard to the presence of Filipino Talents here. How about- maybe because they are confident about themselves that no FT can pose a threat to their position in this society?
Besides, who is a real Singaporean? Most here being third generation citizens who are mere descendants of the early immigrants that came to this tiny but special country in the 19th and early 20th century (early FTs I suppose).

Philippines and Norway are the only two countries that met the acceptable level of business standard. It is good that singaporeans were also ranked as 9th place amongst all the countries.

2. Low wage workers – yes Filipinos get lower salaries than Singaporeans. Blame it on both governments – not the people. Philippines has some ways to go as far as politics and improving the standard of living. Until then most of those looking for higher compensation will look for work abroad. Singapore on the otherhand has built such a high standard of living and salaries/wages that multinational companies located there find it hard to have a balance betweenn CAPEX and OPEX. Imagine, what would happen to Singaporean economy if multinational corporations moved their investment to the source of their workforce — say the Philippines? What would happen to some Singaporean families if they’d have to stay at home to watch the kids instead of work because there are no helpers of other nationalities because local helpers are all too expensive?
3. Economy — Singapore is not as different as the Philippines. The economic boom you are experiencing is because of the industry of people (workforce) and the government policies on global investors. Both these come be recovered in time by the Philippines (was already achieved by the Philippines back in the period before the 80’s). However, your country lack a lot of natural resources that the philippines has abundance of. Singapore is in fact even sharing land with a neighbor country.
4. Race — if you have studied our history, you’ll learn that we all come from the same race. asians have migrated to various islands and mixed with westernerns until they were able to create their physical identity and language. In the more recent history, Singaporeans are not a unique pure-bred race too. Actually other than the political separation, Singapore is as much as Malaysians — just like Filipinos.
I have to understand that the hatred is coming from the fact that migratory workers are taking away jobs from the locals. Some Filipino businessmen feel the same towards other races putting up large businesses in the Philippines thus killing small home-made businesses by locals. It is normal and blame it on globalization.
If you’d like to keep out Foreign workers and tourists then have your government apply a closed door policy like what China did for a long time. Only, China was successful because they had the land mass, the workforce and all the natural resources they need. Singapore only has a small workforce and a piece of land no bigger than the biggest cities in the Philippines. Filipinos will then still be globally marketable as skilled and professional workers elsewhere because of their education and attitude.
I still love my chinese kin but it is sad that there are those that are too traditional to accept that cultures will merge as an effect of true globalization. Racism and prejudice will always exist but can always be settled with real understanding of one another. Not all Filipinos are blindly patriotic and so are Singaporeans. The better ones are those that understand that instead of blaming others, they have to build themselves to be globally competitive in a global market place (not on a silo-scale industry)

Will demeaning Filipinos working in Singapore make you feel good about yourself? It’s a pity that you seem to have not enjoyed your stay in the Philippines many years back. But I don’t think that you are in a position to make conclusions based on your very limited exposure to the country…or obviously very limited knowledge of it.
You cannot even highlight your strength’s to justify why it’s unnecessary, for companies in Singapore, to keep hiring Filipinos instead of locals like you. You can only assert that FTs from other countries like Myanmar and Vietnam may soon replace the Filipinos here. So what difference will that make? Aside from Singapore, Japan, Dubai, Saudi, and other Middle Eastern countries are the most common work destination of FIlipinos. We go there because it is more economically beneificial for us than working at home. We are grateful to these countries for making it possible for us to have better economic means. In return we provide the brawn and brain as these countries modernize/develop or maintain the status quo.
It is a win-win situation. We supply what Singapore and other countries do not have in return for something that we cannot easily obtain at home. There is no shame in looking for the proverbial greener pasture. In fact, it is the wise thing to do.
In a country like Singapore, it is almost impossible to just walk in and get a job. One has to have the right qualifications and experience, or at the very least, the willingness to perform a job considered beneath the station of an average Singaporean.
The Singaporean government gave the blessing to FIlipinos (and other nationalities) to keep working there. It is safe to assume that this is because the native workforce cannot cope with the demands of the country’s growth. This is a simple supply-demand situation, no more no less. If tomorrow you Singaporeans suddenly find yourselves having enough native workforce, then this supply-demand law will take care of the Filipinos’ supposedly unwelcome proliferation in Singapore more effectively and outrightly than this cheap racist slur.
But first, Singapore, you have to gear up and breed more, or at least be willing to perform household chores.
Having been posted overseas (and working with expatriates from practically all nations) has completely banished my “scorn” for funny English grammar and accent. I am embarrassed to admit that I used to hate the Singaporean sing-song accent; I also do not like the Filipino stiff-toned English; I laugh at the shrunk-tongued Indian speech; I dislike the guttural Germanic utterance of the English language; I find the hill-billy twang too uneducated; I find unromantic the Latino version of English . . . I have worked with all sorts of accents but at the end of the day we get the work done and the cacophony of the rhytms and trills of the English language as it is spoken internationally all seem to make sense.
To recap the main points: 1) Filipinos are in Singapore because of a mutual need, and 2) English is an international language and is spoken in more manners than there are nations.
Ergo: the writer of this blog should work at building his native workforce and he should get out of SIngapore more often and sample the countless versions of the spoken English language.

I say and repeat again: Pinoys at all levels of society are highly opinionated. This could be due to their political culture: flag bearing, breasts beating, hysteria, mobbish show of sound and fury signifying nothing. Just look at their domestic politics: senator said this, judge overruled, police chief intervened and finally prisoner sent to live in “prison” with favoured amenities. If I am a Pinoy, I will feel so ashamed in the ineptness of my country. Would it be possible, that the reason a huge majority of you are ranting is because somehow, the truth hurts? It seems to me that a lot of the reactions here indicate just that.
The author never stated that all Filipinos are alike, perhaps he just wanted to point out his observation that most of us are.
Common guys. Show to the world that we’re better than this. This is the author’s humble opinion. Instead of bashing him with insults, why don’t we consider what he said and work on our weaknesses. Only when we learn to accept the reality of things will we begin to grow.

opinion about English Proficiency, I believe no nationality will ever be able to speak and write Perfect English. I am a filipino proud to work in the call center industry and has spoken to millions of americans and canadians. Even their native tongues have grammatical slips. Cant even spell simple english words. Some americans are hard to understand as well bec of their southern accent. Ive seen one reality show in britain, they have to subtitle the show so it can be understood. My point is even the native english speaking countries arent perfect with their own language, how can filipinos or singaporeans be?

An article a few people I know have come across and sent to me to read. I knew immediately I would have an opinion because of the words “Singaporean” and “Filipino”, myself identifying with both countries and calling both places home.
Upon reading it, I felt outraged and incredibly hurt at all the accusations and sweeping generalisations the author made, especially when I have been told the opposite of what he accuses Filipinos of being. I have heard many, not just Singaporeans, say they think we are a lively, hospitable bunch with a more than decent standard of English, among other things. And I pride myself on retaining that aspect of being a full-blooded Filipino, despite only being in the motherland for 2 to 3 months a year.
However I am also proud of having grown up in one of the safest countries in the world, and receiving a normal, local education. I know that it is the Singaporean mindset that keeps pushing me to do better academically, but my Filipino upbringing that tells me I need to give back to society. This mentality will not only apply to Filipinos/Singaporeans; I’m just saying that considering myself to be both a Filipino and a Singaporean helps so much in life.
I have travelled to many regions, I have met people of many different races and religions, and I know that no one has a perfect country. I have seen much and learnt that tolerance, empathy, and understanding are all key elements in ensuring you get the best out of however many worlds you’ve lived in. There are many things I dislike about Singapore AND the Philippines, but there are also many many things I love about both. You can’t have it all, and neither can a single country. What one country lacks, it borrows or buys from another. That’s business, that’s politics, and countries around the world are ALL doing it.
Also, English proficiency is hardly something to be fighting over. I have witnessed many people of many races struggle with English. And English itself is a borrowed language, with words rooted in French, Spanish, Italian, Latin, etc etc and the list goes on. The global development of the world as a whole has resulted in the inevitable borrowing of cultures from country to country. Children in Singapore can watch British cartoons. Children in the Philippines can learn Spanish in school. Botj countries have access to the same satellite/cable TV channels, as do many countries around the world. It’s the power of technology and the Internet! (And yes, I learnt that in Social Studies, a subject taught in local Singaporean schools. However I have discussed this “phenomenon” with friends from around the world. This subject matter isn’t just a Singaporean mindset, it’s a global issue.)
I am sure many Singaporeans would disagree with this man, but I’m also sure many Filipinos would secretly admit to the work-ethics or whatever other accusations there are. However, the faults he has pointed out are definitely not just “Filipino” in general, but human through and through. He could have pointed these things out, but it is hardly fair of him to generalise it as a Filipino fault. That would be the racism.
One guy’s narrow-minded opinion has sparked off such a crazy debate in the comments, where the words thrown around are more hurtful than the article itself. But moreover a journalism website has no grasp over the concept of “responsible journalism”. If I knew for a fact the government would do something about this irresponsibility and blatant racism, I have half the mind to write a letter in myself. However these cases are rampant and even more so in a multiracial country like this. The laws that stood against racism are having a hard time catching all the culprits. I would like to think the unhappy commenters and the writer himself are still the minority of what I feel are both very global countries, in their own special way.
As a side note, if we are to argue about stupidity, it is not a racial problem so much as an individual problem. I hear a certain Amanda believes Singapore is in Europe and that Canada is a religion, but I certainly don’t see the rest of America thinking the same way.

The behavior of Filipinos varies from where they are from, social class, race and background.
Manileños (people born, raised and educated in Manila) are quite different vs those from the provinces. They are more self-assured, assertive, better educated, and would typically come from relatively more middle to upper class family (read = people who also hire maids). They have relatively larger egos that would probably rub some Singaporeans quite strongly. Chances are they can also do head on debate with you in straight English.
This is true as well for people from the provinces that come from relatively more affluent families and have studied in institutions in Manila.
Chances are these people from the higher classes in Filipino society are what Singaporeans are now having a chance to interact with vs years ago. As Singapore position itself as a regional hub in Asia, it’s inevitable for Singaporeans to face the most elitist spoiled brats from all over Southeast Asia. 😉
Oh and those who party in Orchard, don’t worry, you’re not alone… chances are the elitist Filipinos would be annoyed of them too.

I just want to add my two cents here, it used to be, when people from less-developed countries tried to make a living in first world countries, it wasn’t so easy. So when they really had the chance, they didn’t take it for granted. They were usually the best of the bunch, and they were serious about their work, about making it in the big city. But nowadays, as demand on cheap labors rises, people could find jobs in first world countries relatively easier, and they’d come out in droves so the socio-cultural impact is more noticeable compared to years ago.
From my observation, Filipinos and PRC are the majority in the FT pool, so by mathematical alone, it’s understandable you are bound to come across unfavorable Filipinos and PRC more than any other nationalities. These unfavorable characters can really do a number on you and when people are frustrated, they tend to attack obvious physical / visible traits as an easy way out.
That being said, I need to vent out my frustration over some Filipinos I’ve met here whom I think are only riding on the coattails of their good predecessors. However, this is not unique to Filipinos, sometimes I think Filipinos are just unfortunate to be an easy target for blame, IMHO.

Wow this is a great article that showcase a lot of real thoughts here of the pinoys. I am a true blue Singaporean but I was treated as a second class citizen in my own country by this ‘service staff’ pinoys. They are very irritating in public, speaking loudly trying to ‘slang’ which makes it really hard to understand them. They try so hard to please the Caucasians here and look down on the locals but this is our country and they need to learn to respect the locals. As the saying goes:’ when you’re in Rome, do what the Romans do.’ The whole Singapore seems tp be overtaken by the pinoys. Totally agree when these pinoys need favor from you, they’ be ‘nice’ to you. Once they’ve achieved their goals, they’ll cast you out like a dirty rag! That makes me wonder what’s Singapore going to be in 10-20 years time with this kind of breed among us. Singapore being used n spit out n discarded? A question to ponder for a lot of us.
