Head Pastor Lawrence Khong urges fellow pastors to pray for Kong Hee and to speak ‘well’ of CHC

Posted by temasektimes on June 28, 2012

Influential Head Pastor of Faith Community Baptist Church (FCBC) and Chairman of ‘Love Singapore’ Pastor Lawrence Khong (pic left) has called on fellow pastors to rally behind disgraced founder of City Harvest Church (CHC) Kong Hee and to pray for him.

Kong Hee was charged in court yesterday together with four others for misappropriating up to S$50 million dollars of the church’s funds and diverting them to further the music career of his singer wife Ho Yeow San.

Despite being condemned roundly by many Singaporeans including Christians, a senior figure from the Christian community Lawrence Khong had spoken up publicly in defence of Kong Hee.

In a note posted on his Facebook, Pastor Khong urged fellow pastors to unite behind Kong Hee:

We read with sadness the charges brought against Pastor Kong Hee and four senior leaders of City Harvest Church.

“We must stand ever more united in love and stronger in prayer for Pastor Kong Hee and the church. This is a time of testing for the Body of Christ. Truth is, we are all on trial before a righteous God. We must ask ourselves: Do we truly love the Body? Let there be a powerful prayerbuzz—on earth as it is in heaven! Let’s tell our members to talk more with God and less with others, especially on social media.”

He reminded them that Kong Hee is ‘innocent until proven guilty’ and implored them not to ‘prejudge or make baseless assumptions.’

“We must seek every opportunity to speak well of City Harvest Church. Its impact on the youth of Singapore is phenomenal. Its community service is outstanding. Its social arm meets a wide range of needs,” he added.

        This pastor uses magic as the basis of this plays which focuses on the love of the father ie. the God that Christians worship. At the end of his magic performances he gives a mini sermon. This is especially so when the magic shows are done in church.

    Prayers are powerful. But to pray for strength to defend corrupted practices (subject to proof) is not something I can really fathom.? I can only pray that he is not guilty or misusing Church funds and if the charges are dropped then, there is a greater
    need to use the money for charitable and worthy causes, not to buy expensive homes for self-enjoyment.

      When lawrence Khong says that christian are on trial, The trial refers to theological reference of trials and tribulations and not of a legal proceeding. As we can see non-christians are condemming the christian community based on the actions of 5 persons. People are alread judging this church before the verdict is given by the courts.

  6. Ron said

    The Head Pastor should also ask for prayers for the immense flock of Christians who are now thrown into confusion by this scandal. “Innocent until found guilty” is again a much abused phrase. Yes, he will be defended by the best legal brains he can hire but tell me on statistics basis, how many financial scandals have been found Not Guilty?

    The chances are slim. Firstly this is a high profile case and the Government would have proceeded with the utmost care and the data must have been thoroughly scrutinised. Even then they would have proceeded only with charges that they have solid evidence. The government is also staffed with experts. So, they know how to do forensic accounting.

    By all means pray for the Pastor but it is the tens of thousands who are now undergoing various levels of emotions. And what happens when the verdict is Guilty? What about those who donated faithfully for the cause of the Church?

    Yes the Body of Christ is being severely tested. But who started this scandal? And if you go back the years, it was not a one day affair. There was a pattern of wrong-doing that led to the Court action.

    As a Catholic (and hence a Christian) I feel badly betrayed when such a scandal occurs. My faith in God is being tested. Wny was it not stopped earlier? Why did God not strike him down earlier? And if he is not guilty, then why is the case now at the Court? Is my God omnipotent or just a weak God? You can see that even I am going through some emotions though I did not pay CHC a cent.

    • Wide-Eyed said

      Exactly. ‘Innocent until proven guilty” doesn’t apply when the CAD has swooped in. They have found the evidence and the Attorney-General’s Chamber is confident to press charges. Make no mistake about that. Never forget that the prosecutors are all top law graduates working for the Civil Service. Don’t pray pray. What leaves to be answered is, WHO are the defendants’ lawyers? I guess the lawyers must be top-notch too, to fight the case. Who’s gonna foot the bill? More church donations?

    • P Koh said

      God does not interfere with the pains and pleasures of human beings. Neither does God protects or punishes them.
      God does not get involved in nature which are allowed to take their natural courses. It is often said that God help those who help themselves and if God intervenes then the world will be topsy-turvy. We can only pray to God for Strength to carry out the things that we want to do for humanity. Pray fervently for that strength and your faith in Him will give you the answer that you seek.

        Surely God is good to Israel,
        to those who are pure in heart.
        2 But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;
        I had nearly lost my foothold.
        3 For I envied the arrogant
        when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
        4 They have no struggles;
        their bodies are healthy and strong.[a]
        5 They are free from common human burdens;
        they are not plagued by human ills.
        6 Therefore pride is their necklace;
        they clothe themselves with violence.
        7 From their callous hearts comes iniquity[b];
        their evil imaginations have no limits.
        8 They scoff, and speak with malice;
        with arrogance they threaten oppression.
        9 Their mouths lay claim to heaven,
        and their tongues take possession of the earth.
        10 Therefore their people turn to them
        and drink up waters in abundance.[c]
        11 They say, “How would God know?
        Does the Most High know anything?”
        12 This is what the wicked are like—
        always free of care, they go on amassing wealth.
        13 Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure
        and have washed my hands in innocence.
        14 All day long I have been afflicted,
        and every morning brings new punishments.
        15 If I had spoken out like that,
        I would have betrayed your children.
        16 When I tried to understand all this,
        it troubled me deeply
        17 till I entered the sanctuary of God;
        then I understood their final destiny.
        18 Surely you place them on slippery ground;
        you cast them down to ruin.
        19 How suddenly are they destroyed,
        completely swept away by terrors!
        20 They are like a dream when one awakes;
        when you arise, Lord,
        you will despise them as fantasies.
        21 When my heart was grieved
        and my spirit embittered,
        22 I was senseless and ignorant;
        I was a brute beast before you.
        Psalm 73:1-22
        Perhaps this Psalm might answer your question? What this is saying is do not worry because eventually the wicked will be punished, sure they might look like they go around unpunished for some time but eventually they will have to face the full wrath and consequences of their wickedness. And you see “Suddenly are they destroyed” This shows that we have to really trust in God’s timing and believe in his just ways that justice will definitely prevail.

        However, God does not seek to punish in the sense that he is a merciful God and always wants to provide an avenue for us to repent and be reunited with him in his presence, hence I believe God will do his best to withhold punishment until a person’s heart is totally hardened to the point of no return or when his repeated calls to repent go unheard despite us understanding what we are doing is wrong etc.

        Perhaps you could put it into the perspective of this entire case altogether? Pastor Kong Hee originally had a complaint by one of his former CHC member 9 years ago about issues correct? “Nine years ago in 2003, businessman and church member, Roland Poon Swee Kay, wrote to the media about the alleged funding of Ho Yeow Sun aka Sun Ho’s music career by the City Harvest Church (CHC).” Perhaps this was the first warning call from God for Kong Hee to be careful and to stop committing any sin he might have and repent. However, after 9 more years of not owning up to any mishandling of funds etc. God might have finally decided to punish him but of course he can always still repent but he will have to face the consequences of his sin regardless. I use perhaps and might because ultimately only God and Pastor Kong Hee know the full truth of the matter and what I’m saying is mere speculation of what might be true since the law has acquired sufficient evidence to put him on trial. On the hand we do not know the full truth of the matter and so we should not judge as if we know everything already.

    Until proven guilty, we must give others the benefits of doubts.

    No matter what happen, God is there to make sure justice to be serve.

  9. Head Pastor Lawrence Khong’s spirited defence of beleagured Khong Hee wld raise these searching questions: 1) Has he some hidden skeletons in his cupboard that wld not stand up to scrutiny shd CAD and/or the CPIB investigate into them? 2) Is he stirring up religious feelings among church goers and other pastors hopefully to obstruct the course of justice in Khong Hee’s ongoing case and, by logical extension, himself if he has skeletons to hide? 3) What is his hidden agenda in standing up for Khong Hee when he shd more correctly exercise due restraint not to interfere in the investigations into Khong Hee and his impending court case, to stir up other pastors and church goers “to support Khong Hee”? 4) For that matter, has he also bn hauled up for questioning in a separate investigation by the CAD or some other govt agency?
    Church-goers at his church shd be wary of his call to support Khong Hee until the dust has settled. Paster Lawrence Khong is playing with fire to stir religious fervour among his church members to support Khong Hee to obstruct justice being done.

      you misunderstand his intentions he is in no way defending Kong Hee’s actions, in fact this article seems to twist his words and intentions in such a way. But in actual fact I believe what he is saying is to pray for the truth and only the truth to be fully revealed and to pray that if indeed Kong Hee is really guilty as charged that he may realize the folly of his actions and repent BUT face the consequences of his actions by submitting to the appropriate just authorities. But afterall all we know are the details to which the media has published we do not know the full story and so i believe he decided to post such a message because people are just judging and condemning all the members of this case even before the trial has concluded and before all the dust has settled. Who are we in the first place to judge other people unless we are ourselves 100% blameless.

    United in love?? Lots of politics within the church, including FCBC. Lawrence Khong doesn’t feel threatened by the fact that his members have been leaving the church over the years, thanks to his “G12 movement” and relentless efforts to grow and grow the church. FCBC is now no longer the biggest. So much for his ‘God-given’ G12 vision. FCBC has been speaking badly of some church, and usually that is because many of their members jumped ship. I truly do not understand this man’s words. He said, “Truth is, we are all on trial before a righteous God.” Why shouldn’t you be on trial before God. Are you implying your righteousness simply because the God is righteous? Or do you automatically become righteous by the fact that you are tried before a God who is righteous? Let us see whether the righteous God will punish the true sinners. Religious abuse should not be justified by words of wisdom, instead it should be condemned with the strongest words possible to deter such evil occurrence. Those who support evil actions are evil themselves!

    Quite worrying when the head pastor and other pasters show their support and even ask their followers to support someone who is suspected of wrongdoing by the authorities. Yes, he is not guilty now but what if evidence proves otherwise later and he is indeed found guilty (I’m saying what if)? What will happen to those followers who trust and believe their pastors? A leader should always think what impact his actions will bring to his ppl and the consequences before saying or does anything.

Disappointed that even a Head Pastor, furthermore the Head Pastor of Faith Community Baptist Church (FCBC) and Chairman of ‘Love Singapore’ Pastor Lawrence Khong would called on fellow pastors to rally behind Kong Hee and pray for him. This shows biasness on Lawrence Khong side – abusing his position to influence other or abusing the religion.

    All fellow pastors should pray for the truth to prevail – let those who deserved it be rewarded and those who deserved it be punished.

      Yes I totally agree with you. This is also why I am very disappointed with Lawrence Khong. I was shocked by him taking side with the act of Kong Hee, instead of praying for justice he want us to pray for a group of thieves at the expense of Jesus Christ! This kind of people must be stop otherwise who knows they might just form an army under the name of Sun Ho & Kong Hee to overthrow the government. Pls don’t think this is impossible because truth is, greed is never ending. First he took $23M, now became $50M, moved from HBD to a luxurious apartment in Orchard Rd & now a super luxurios property @Sentosa Cove etc etc with Charity monies. All these are making people feel disgusted, not that we like to speculate. Think again, if there is no prove then the authorities would to have issued a warrant of arrest. How much does he want more to build a church from 2002 until 2012 & always talk about money not enough? The monies he squandered were more than enough to build a church tinted with solid gold & yet week after week, year after year they cannot even come out with a decent plot of land. CHC followers continue to condemn outsiders for speculating on this issue, but have they all use their brain & think for a moment as to where did all the charity monies go to?

    There have been too many scandals involving Charities and I think it is high time to have a thorough review of how Charities should be approved and supervised. It is a big loop hole in tax-free money when you are looking at easily hundreds of millions a year in total collections by all charities. And not to forget the matching approval by the government for certain approved charities.

    Old NKF, Renci, Churches and a few smaller ones that just got away or disappeared. It is a scandal that stinks to high heavens and we need to strengthen the office of the Commissioner of Charities.

    Taxation. Why should charities be 100% tax-exempted? They should be allowed a certain amount based on the assessment of the COC. Any capital and valid business expenditures can qualify for tax rebates. Reserves have to be taxed and the tax collected goes to Community Chest. Charity money is not the personal wealth of the church pastor or CEO of that charity. It cannot be used for purchase of luxury homes, junket trips, gold toilets, singing promotion, etc. There need to be a separation of what are valid expenses and what is exploitation. Right now, it is so loose that it is easy to exploit the loop-holes.

    Charities. Only large charities should be allowed. Otherwise they can join the Community Chest.

    Audit. This is the biggest blind spot. The government has enough money to assign independent staff and Board Members to all Charities. Also the big Audit firms must be tasked with quarterly review of all charities’ expenses. Each time a scandal breaks out it involves millions. How many more cases have undetected… God knows.

    This business of subtly pressurizing the faithful to tithe, to keep paying more and more should be discussed by a Council of Religious Organizations and a code of conduct or ethics is needed. Again, this is being exploited because there is no control by anyone.

    This kind of scandals will occur again. Spore’s reputation is being hammered again and again by big time charity cheats.

    This man loves the sound of his own voice. So any chance there is to get any attention will do. What is it about these celebrity pastors? It used to be that men of God were discrete and dignified. I did not realize how Hollywoodized these churches have become. Talk about reinterpreting the Bible to suit one’s own needs. And Jesus did not even have a roof over his head!

    Why the pastors here all look like got cosmetic surgery one? Is it a requisite?

    • Skinister said

      Yes he had platic surgery done on and off to maintain his looks at a very well known Cosmetic Surgery Clinic @Orchard Rd. So does his wife. A friend of mine who had been attending Kong Hee’s services @Suntec with all her family members for the past 10yrs said so. She also mentioned that Pastor Kong Hee & wife go for Botox regulalry to look good on stage every Sunday.

    Most inappropriate for the head pastor of Faith Community Baptist Church (FCBC) Lawrence Khong, to stir up emotions amongst its members thru use of religion (invoking his god) especially when the CBT case against the CHC members is not even fought in court yet. Reminds us of the AWARE case when a Christian church pastor invoke his god in a National issue.
    The govt should warn this Khong chap not to cross the line between a secular court case & religion. This precedent is dangerous… a spark waiting to ignite into a “religious fire” if not nipped in the bud.

    • Nelson Quah said

      Is Lawrence Khong championing Kong Hee and his gang whose sordid deeds deserve condemnation in the severest terms? Instead of admonishing church leaders to serve God first and themselves last, Khong has tried to insinuate that there are reasons for Kong Hee to be prayed for. My warning to Khong is to stop defending the indefensible and to let the justice takes its course. Shame on you, the Chief Clown at FCBC.

      • Laws of Nature said

        Agreed. This Khong (another Kong) chap dabbles in magic.. and like all magicians, he uses tricks to bewilder and confuse
        his followers. Does magician Khong preach ‘prosperity gospel’ ? He must have a hidden agenda for supporting KH, a suspected criminal
        of a mega sum of money…$50.6 million of church funds.

        You guys should stop judging others! Have you even looked in the mirror? I’m really sad for you guys.. You really missed out on the true meaning of love and prayer. Ps Khong is only showing his concern for a fellow brother in Christ ! Would you do the same if your siblings were in the same situation ? He didn’t take any sides. In case you didn’t know, he wrote back to Temesek Times saying that they misinterpreted his words!! So please don’t judge (:

    all these clowns must be on the take or had deals with KH and CHC, hope they all get investigated!!!

    After reading this, article, as much as I hate using vulgarities – I can’t help but feel like telling Lawrence Khong that:” U no longer deserve my respect & I have no regret! Fuck You Lawrwnce Khong!” Fuck You 10000x! How much $$$ did Kong Hee give u under the table? Or did Sun Ho sucked your cock before? Shameless people who exploited the minds of so many youngsters!

    • deathvivi said

      Dont judge! He is didnt say what the media claimed to say! He did write to Temesek times saying that they misinterpreted him. Please you not innocent yourself.

  57. deathvivi said

    Standing united in love and prayer does not mean he took a stand to say Ps Kong Hee is innocent or not. Like how if a close friend or family member is suspected of committing a crime, you will still pray and support him or her. But it does not mean you are supporting his wrong doing (if he was guilty). The statement temesek times made is non sequitur!

    truly warped are these ‘christians’. cults are very hard to stop. just got to accept that they exist in our community and we should do all we can to protect our children and loved ones from them. we should count ourselves lucky that they are not detonating any bombs or gasing any mrt underground station, any time soon.

    Ps Khong is merely showing his care and concern for a fellow brother in Christ. He is not make a stand whether he is right or wrong. You people should jump to conclude! Hear the full story! God bless! One of the most perverting unbiblical teachings of Bible Alone Christians is blindly believing and blindly following Martin Luther’s proclamation one could commit sin and be saved thru’ the Blood of Christ.

    This is an obvious danger of charismatic Christian leaders or churches who believed in the unbiblical sola bible verse (Bible Alone doctrine) and out-of-context interpretation and that grace of Christ covers their sins or tendency to sins. Martin Luther had once wrote and preached one can commit adultery 1,000* times and commit many murders (& other vices) a day and still be saved: Since then, many Christians believe that the Blood of Christ will cover their sins with “snow” and hide them from God!

    Let Your Sins Be Strong:
    A Letter From Luther to Melanchthon; Letter no. 99, 1 August 1521, From the Wartburg; (Segment) Translated by Erika Bullmann Flores from: _Dr. Martin Luther’s Saemmtliche Schriften_Dr, Johannes Georg Walch, Ed. (St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, N.D.), Vol. 15,cols. 2585-2590.

    “Be a sinner, and let your sins be strong, but let your trust in Christ be stronger, and rejoice in Christ who is the victor over sin, death, and the world. We will commit sins while we are here, for this life is not a place where justice resides. We, however, says Peter (2. Peter 3:13) are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth where justice will reign. It suffices that through God’s glory we have recognized the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world. No sin can separate us from Him, even if we were to kill or commit adultery thousands* of times each day” [*1,000 times as quoted by Lutheran historian; some other extracts state 100x]

    http://alaskandreams.net/ekklesia/Luther%20Quotes.htm [Another translation!]
    “God does not work salvation for fictitious sinners. (God can not work salvation in you if you only think you have sinned) Be a sinner and sin vigorously…. Do not for a moment imagine that this life is the abiding place of justice; sin must be committed.”

    “Whenever the devil harasses you, seek the company of men or drink more, or joke and talk nonsense, or do some other merry thing. Sometimes we must drink more, sport, recreate ourselves, and even sin a little to spite the devil, so that we leave him no place for troubling our consciences with trifles. We are conquered if we try too conscientiously not to sin at all. So when the devil says to you: do not drink, answer him: I will drink, and right freely, just because you tell me not to.”

    “The imputation of righteousness we need very much, because we are far from perfect. As long as we have this body, sin will dwell in our flesh. Then, too, we sometimes drive away the holy spirit; we fall into sin, like Peter, David, and other holy men. Nevertheless we may always take recourse to this fact, that our sins are covered, and that God will not lay them to our charge. Sin is not held against us for Christ’s sake.”

    “your sin cannot cast you into hell”

    “No sin can harm me”

    “Sin cannot tear you away from him [Christ], even though you commit adultery a hundred times a day and commit as many murders.”

    (The following two quotes are regarding when you vigorously sin to receive salvation, and when you commit adultery and murder 100(0) times a day – According to Luther it is not that you are sinning against God and leaving behind a trail of human wreckage, it is that you are having sex with demons – so there is no harm or foul. This is so deluded I have no words to say here.)
