Hougang voters should look beyond the usual emotional antics played by Workers Party to deceive them

Posted by temasektimes on May 24, 2012

The Workers Party’s rally on Tuesday night (pic left) was disrupted by a heavy downpour. Instead of ending the rally immediately and dispersing the crowd, WP leaders ‘soldiered’ on in the rain and was thoroughly drenched. As expected, the scene was captured on camera and spread throughout cyberspace to highlight their ‘dedication’.

This is the same old emotional trick used by WP time and again to rally their core support base and to portray their candidates as ‘selfless, dedicated and loyal patriots’.

Yaw Shin Leong played the same record during an election rally last year, giving a rousing speech in Teochew to galvanize the crowd, some of whom were reportedly moved to tears. Less than a year later, he left Hougang residents in the lurch and caused a by-election to be called after failing to address rumors about him being ‘romantically’ involved with two key WP married female leaders.

Any fine orator can give a rousing speech to inspire the crowd. Witness Hitler who managed to rally the Germans to his cause with his fiery speeches. Anybody can stand soaked in the rain motionless for hours to win public sympathy. You do not need a ‘Best Actor’ to do that. But beyond these emotional antics, what else can WP offer Hougang?

WP wants Hougang residents to preserve the ‘bastion’ of democracy in Singapore, so as to speak, but it already has five MPs and two NCMPs in Parliament. Will Png Eng Huat make a difference?

It is not the quantity of opposition MPs, but their quality which counts. In the 1980s, one Joshua Benjamin Jeyaretnam was enough to ‘shake’ the entire cabinet whenever he made a speech. Now, we have ‘opposition’ MPs who conveniently plagiarized articles from anonymous online sources to be their parliamentary speeches.

JBJ fought tooth and nail for Singaporeans and irritated former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew so much that he once told former President Devan Nair and he could not wait to see the last of him.

WP MPs have offered only token opposition to the PAP policies and offered nothing different. Their proposed salary scheme for political leaders differed little from the PAP and all voted ‘Aye’ to the PAP’s Budget. Even the PAP backbenchers and Nominated MPs are more vocal than them.

Given the dismal performance of the WP MPs in parliament, what difference does it make if we replace them with a bunch of dummies? Does our august house require another dummy in parliament who does not seem to remember or know what he saying?

Besides harping on its ‘twenty year track record’ in Hougang, WP doesn’t have any concrete plans to take the constituency forward.

The PAP candidate for Hougang Desmond Choo has done much more for Hougang in a year than its ex-MP Yaw Shin Leong. He managed to set up a job hub, a free legal clinic and a TCM clinic for elderly residents, among others.

Low Thia Kiang accused Mr Choo of using taxpayers’ monies to paste ‘gold’ on his fact, but in reality, Mr Choo did not spend a single cent of public monies on these social welfare projects which were tied up with external non-government agencies like the Criminal Association of Lawyers.

What did WP do other than whining time and again like an old broken recorder that the government has been unfair to them? Nobody is stopping its MPs from soliciting funds from elsewhere. Nobody is preventing WP from collaborating with external agencies and certainly nobody can dictate to WP what it can and cannot do in Hougang.

If an outsider like Mr Choo can do so much for Hougang within so short a period of time, what has WP been doing for the last 20 years other than shouting some empty slogans to ‘slap’ (or kiss?) the government?

Singapore was built by leaders who walked the talk, not just talk, talk, talk and stand in the rain to cry father and cry mother.

Come this evening, the lead actor Low Thia Kiang will take to the stage again to tug at the heart-strings of Hougang voters, reminding them again of the strong ‘bond’ they share with him and perhaps shed a fake crocodile tear or two to move their hearts.

Singaporeans are largely soft-hearted people and there will be some who will be tricked by WP’s grand ‘wayang kulit’ again. Not too much hard work to earn a $15,000 monthly salary for somebody who reportedly had a few failed business ventures in the last ten years.

Hougang resident: Let’s have a first-world Hougang before we talk about a first-world Parliament

Posted by temasektimes on May 24, 2012

Dear fellow residents of Hougang,

In this coming Saturday, thousands of us will be going to the polling stations to cast our votes again, hardly a year after we last did. Before we decide on who to vote for, we should all ask ourselves three basic questions.

How does this by-election come about? What do we want and when do we want them? Who can best serve our needs?

How does this by-election come about?

During the last General Election, WP leader Low Thia Khiang chose his protege Yaw Shin Leong (YSL) to compete in Hougang. He openly declared that YSL was a person of integrity, honest, capable, etc. We gave both of them our wholehearted support and elected YSL to be our voice in Parliament. Sadly, he did not even have a chance to walk into Parliament House.

Before the first Parliament sitting, it was revealed that he had been involved in a sex scandal with some of his Party members. He was sacked by his own Party and disqualified from Parliament. That is why we are having this by-election. This is a betrayal of our trust in the WP. Should we believe in Low Thia Khiang and the WP again?

What do we want and when do we want them?

Enough of all those political rhetoric about democracy, first world Parliament, etc. What we really need for our beloved Hougang are upgrading and development programs. It’s time to discard our political burden. It’s time to progress like the other constituencies. Let’s have a first-world Hougang before we talk about a first-world Parliament. Hougang should have the latest amenities and facilities like the other constituencies. They are what we need, and need now.

Who can best serve our needs?

The PAP candidate Desmond Choo has been with us for only about a year now. Despite not being our elected MP, he has done more than the elected one who is nowhere to be seen now. In fact, in some areas, Desmond has accomplished what all the WP MP’s we have helped to get into Parliament over the 20+ years have not.

Who is Png Eng Huat? How many of us know him before the start of this by-election? How much do we really know about him besides what we hear from Low Thia Khiang? Don’t forget, he had said the same thing about his ex-protege YSL. Desmond will be able to work closely with the government for all the progress that we need to make. The choice before us is crystal clear.

Fellow residents of Hougang, vote wisely. Vote for Progress, not Politics.

Majulah Hougang! Majulah Singapura!

Desmond Choo and Rotary Club to roll out ‘Friendlier Homes Project’ to help needy elderly Hougang residents

Posted by temasektimes on May 24, 2012

PAP candidate for Hougang Desmond Choo (pic left) will be collaborating with the Rotary Club to roll out a ‘Friendlier Homes Project’ to help needy elderly residents in Hougang.

Mr Choo has spent the last few months walking the ground in Hougang and talking to residents to identify their needs before submitting a proposal to the Rotary Club of Singapore for its consideration.

Though Mr Choo lost to WP’s Yaw Shin Leong in the May General Election last year, he started work in Hougang immediately after his defeat and had been working hard in the last one month, especially so after Yaw went ‘AWOLed’ after he was sacked from WP for his failure to address swirling rumors about his alleged extramarital affairs with multiple married women including two key WP female leaders.

In a letter addressed to Mr Choo, the President of the Rotary Club of Singapore Tapan Kumar Rao wrote that he was impressed by Mr Choo’s involvement in identifying the needs of Hougang elderly residents and in campaigning for them to get involved in improving their lives.

The long-term projects involved raising funds to retrofit toilets to make them friendly for the elderly and an ‘adopt a grandparent’ program to bridge the young and old in society.

Rotary Club is a non-government organization which is not owned or linked to the government in anyway. It obtains its funds largely from well-wisher and donation drives.

Some responses from Hougang residents on Mr Desmond Choo’s Facebook page:

“He didn’t use Tax Payers money to help the needy, he didn’t ask for any funds from his Party to spend on Hougang residents, his action attracted all the charitable organisations to come forward willingly to help and support his plans. Rotary Club’s letter is a good testimonial. Why are we still doubting him?” – Jimmy Cheang

“A job well done! we’re seeing more initiatives in Hougang even before Desmond is voted in than we have for Aljunied after WP promised to do better than the previous party… perhaps some people should just stop boasting about the new talents they have AND PUT SOME WORDS INTO ACTION. we don’t need lip service in Singapore. we need people who truly want to serve, and not say they want to serve every 5 yrs after submitting their nomination papers! Good job Desmond Choo! You’re the best choice for Hougang!” – Kong Junjie

“朱倍庆辛苦奔波为贫困的后港居民谋求福利,这本来就是某某某需要做而没有做的义举,唉!等到朱先生做到了,他们才来冷嘲热讽,太过份了。枉费后港居民支持了他们二十年!” – Angelia See

Hougang residents rally behind Desmond Choo despite being smeared and intimidated by WP supporters

Posted by temasektimes on May 23, 2012

Hougang residents have rallied behind PAP candidate for Hougang Desmond Choo (pic left) after he became a target of a vicious smear campaign launched by fanatical WP supporters who have also been behaving like hooligans to intimidate his supporters into silence.

WP member/supporter Seah Ee Onn had earlier accused Mr Choo of trying to ‘buy’ the vote of his grandmother on Facebook. His comment has since been deleted and he is nowhere to be seen, heard or found.

Mr Choo has debunked the allegations and said he would consider taking legal action if they persist. The underhanded tactics employed by WP supporters not only backfired, but prompted more Hougang residents disgusted with the Workers Party to switch their support instead!

Below are some comments of support posted on Mr Desmond Choo’s Facebook. We have refrained from publishing their photos this time out of concern for their safety after others were harassed by WP supporters.

“清者自清,浊者自浊!倍庆我们支持你!铁汉柔情!!! 倍庆加油!!” – Michael Chia

“是不是该感谢这网民教育了大家并具体地表现出‘人在做天再看’的行为呢?害人害己 。。。要知道一百件好事也抵不过一件蓄意扭曲的事;凡事凭本事,万事凭良心,方能转识为智呀” – Ryn Soo Ling

“Let’s all stand up for Desmond Choo. We are behind Desmond Choo.” – Ow Yew Wah

“Take Hougang back now and eventually Aljunied GRC as I’m staying there. I don’t see any changes or improvements as claimed by WP during last year GE.” – Edward Twb

One Hougang resident Chua Boon Siew also wrote to the Straits Times forum today complaining about how WP has short-changed Hougang voters over the years.

“I live in Hougang and, from my view, nothing much has changed. Residents should not expect new and better facilities for the next five years if the WP wins. Simply put, the WP has no ways or means to improve Hougang.”

Meanwhile, rowdy WP supporters continue to trumpet WP’s chances on the internet with some predicting an even ‘bigger’ margin of victory for its candidate Png Eng Huat this time to kick Mr Choo’s ‘sorry ass’ out of Hougang forever.

The pro-WP Yahoo News which has been doubling up as its unofficial ‘Hammer’ newsletter even predicted an ‘easy’ victory for Mr Png before a single vote was cast.

DPM Teo Chee Hean: I am disappointed with WP supporters for dragging in their grandmothers to make voters angry and emotional

Posted by temasektimes on May 23, 2012

Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean has expressed his disappointment at the vicious smear campaign launched by WP supporters online to discredit and demolish the PAP candidate for Hougang Mr Desmond Choo.

Speaking to the media during a tour of Hougang on Monday, DPM Teo said he was disappointed with what has been written online by WP supporters:

“There is another aspect of the campaign this time round, by and large it has been good, and it has been clean. But there is one aspect which has saddened me and disappointed me a little particularly online.”

One WP supporter by the name of Seah Ee Onn has earlier accused Mr Desmond Choo of asking his grandmother to vote for him in exchange of an unknown ‘gift’. He had since deleted his comment left on Facebook.

“Those who claim to be supporters of the Workers’ Party dragged in their grandmothers, made all sorts of wild accusations, even unfortunately tried to capitalise on a tragic incident to make voters angry and emotional.”

Besides Seah, other WP supporters have also been hurling all kinds of wild, baseless and malicious allegations at Mr Choo including one extremist socio-political blog with a pathetic low readership claiming that he attributed his ‘low’ rally turnout to his friends playing ‘Diablo 3′, a PC game.

“I am very saddened by that, they claim to be supporters of the Workers’ Party, I think they should stop doing that. I am ashamed people are doing these kinds of things on the net,” DPM Teo added.

WP supporters are so confident of WP’s chances this Saturday that they have already popped the champagne to celebrate with some predicting a even ‘bigger’ margin of victory than last year.

Desmond Choo debunked accusation by WP supporter Seah Ee Onn that he asked his grandma to vote for him in return for a gift

Posted by temasektimes on May 21, 2012

PAP candidate for Hougang by-election Desmond Choo is a gentleman who promised to conduct a ‘clean’ campaign, but his opponents do not seem to reciprocate his goodwill.

The seat of Hougang was left vacant after its ex-WP MP Yaw Shin Leong was sacked from WP in February this year for his failure to address swirling rumors about his alleged extramarital affairs with multiple married women, including two key WP female leaders.

After WP leaders hurled malicious and baseless accusations at Mr Choo one after another during its election rally last Saturday, WP supporters have launched a nasty smear campaign online to discredit and demolish Mr Choo.

One WP supporter by the name Seah Ee Onn (pic left) proclaimed on Facebook that Mr Choo tried to ‘buy’ the vote of his grandmother in exchange for a ‘gift’.

He initially said he may consider lodging a police report, but backed down hours later by deleting his comment and saying that the decision does not lie with him:

“As for the police report, the decision is not mine to make.”

Though his comment has since been removed, it still caused a stir in cyberspace with some questioning if Mr Choo has resorted to such ‘tactics’ to win votes.

[Source: Facebook]

Speaking to queries from the media, Mr Choo debunked the rumors immediately, adding that he is a man of  integrity and he does not want his integrity to be challenged.

He said he has been going about the campaign in a sincere way and there is no way that he will do such things.

“I have developed schemes for them even after I’ve lost (in the last GE), these things are provided for them and the allegation is not consistent with what I’ve been doing,” he said.

Mr Choo did not mention if he would sue Seah Ee Onn for defamation, but he said he would address the issue seriously if a police report is made.

Despite winning the hearts and minds of some Hougang residents for his hard work in Hougang in the past one year, many political pundits have dismissed Mr Choo’s chances in the by-election with its unofficial ‘Hammer’ Yahoo News publicly predicting an ‘easy’ victory for WP even before a single vote is cast.

WP leaders have been asking Hougang residents to continue to support WP because of its ’20 year presence’ there as if Hougang is a ‘property’ of the Workers Party with scant regard for their feelings and aspirations.

Young Hougang voters growing disillusioned with Workers Party?

Posted by temasektimes on May 21, 2012

Hougang may be the impregnable ‘fortress’ of the Workers Party for the past twenty years, but the betrayal by its ex-WP MP Yaw Shin Leong has caused some young Hougang voters to wonder if they should still support the party.

The seat of Hougang was left vacant after Yaw was sacked by WP for his failure to address swirling rumors about his alleged extramarital affairs with multiple married women, including two key WP female leaders.

During a WP rally last Saturday, WP leaders exhorted Hougang residents to continue to support WP to preserve the ‘bastion’ of democracy in Singapore as if Hougang is its ‘property’.

With WP already having 7 MPs in Parliament including two NCMPs, there is no longer any overriding ‘pressure’ for Hougang residents to vote for WP to ensure an opposition presence in parliament, as evident by some comments left by young Hougang voters on the Facebook of PAP candidate for Hougang Mr Desmond Choo.

Former WP supporter Christina Lee regretted voting for WP in the last election:

“Wasted my votes in the past but now wake up liao. Ya they voice in Parliament but no solutions. Object object object no solutions how to lead our country?? Later we become like Greece OR 3rd world country HOW???”

Another Hougang resident Issac Lau asked what has WP done for Hougang:

“What had wp done for hougang? so wayang. only lim kopi with residents, attend wakes and funnerals. always cry father cry mother, but never give any good suggestions. like to complain pap never give them funds. your father never give you pocket money, dont know how to go and find yourself izit? so lazy!”

[Source: Desmond Choo's Facebook]

One long-staying resident of Hougang Marcus Chong asked WP why Hougang residents must continue to ‘sacrifice’ for WP after twenty over years:

“后港人民以经为工人党牺牲了二十多年,为什么还要我们后港人继续为工人党牺牲下去? 为什么定要我们小小的一个后港为你争取民主?除非你工人党国会里七八个议员全部是无能的?! GE2011 你骗了我们 ,2012二月你耍了我们,BE2012你又耍来哄我们,后港人不昰傻子,呆孑,小孩子!”

One Hougang resident Kenny Ong was even estranged from his relatives in Hougang because of his support for Mr Choo:

“As much as it will be a uphill battle to take over Hougang from WP’s hands, we all know what you have done.  In fact my relatives in HG who ate staunched WP supporters are turning against me for my 101% support for you & PAP. It doesn’t matter to me at all, as long as we all know you are trying your best. If you still lose this election, it is clear to all that no matter what you do in the next 10 years won’t change abit. CHOOse Desmond, Dispose the rusty Hammer (20years without Handling Hougang with a well polished Hammer)”

Despite growing disaffection among young Hougang voters against the Workers Party, their views are not aired in pro-WP media outlets and blogs such as Yahoo News which has been actively campaigning for WP in influence the outcome of the by-election.

WP supporters are so confident of a ‘resounding’ victory this Saturday that many have already popped the champagne to celebrate with some predicting WP will win by a much ‘bigger’ margin this time to kick Mr Choo’s ‘sorry ass’ out of Hougang forever.

The air of confidence and arrogance displayed by WP leaders was acknowledged by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong who told the media:

“The Workers’ Party is very confident, and as (Deputy Prime Minister) Tharman (Shanmugaratnam) says, ‘super-confident’ about their chances here; they’ve been in this ward for a long time – Low Thia Khiang personally was here for 20 plus years, but he’s not here anymore.”

Desmond Choo: I did not use taxpayers’ monies to fund my social welfare projects in Hougang

Posted by temasektimes on May 21, 2012

PAP candidate for Hougang by-election Desmond Choo (pic left, source: Facebook) has responded to wild accusations hurled at him by WP Chief Low Thia Kiang during an election rally last Saturday.

Mr Low had earlier accused Mr Choo of using taxpayers’ monies to fund his numerous social welfare projects in Hougang which were initiated by him since last year.

“No matter how many welfare packages rolled out by him (Desmond Choo) to win your votes, the question is: Where did the money come from,” Mr Low thundered.

(他在后港区补选工人党的首场群众大会中说,不论朱倍庆以提供多少福利配套来换取选票,一个基本的问题是:“钱从哪里来?”)

He added callously that Mr Choo is using taxpayers’ monies to paste ‘gold’ on his face:

“Is the money from his pocket? Or from the PAP community fund?….Choo Pey Ching is using your money to paste ‘gold’ on his face!”

(“是从他的口袋吗?是从行动党的基金吗? ….朱倍庆是拿你的钱,往自己脸上贴金!”)

In response, Mr Choo said he respects Mr Low who is many years his ‘senior’ and explained that the he did not use a single cent of public monies to fund his projects.

“It is not easy to find the money and it did not drop down from the sky. We have to raise it painstakingly from donors, sponsors and private enterprises.”

(“钱并不易找,也不是从天上掉下来的,而是我们辛勤地从许多私人捐款者、赞助商和企业身上募捐而来的。”)

Mr Choo added that he has been working the ground in Hougang for the past one year unlike his WP opponent Png Eng Huat who was ‘transferred’ to Hougang from Aljunied GRC after Yaw was expelled from WP for his failure to address rumors swirling around his alleged extramarital affairs with multiple married women, including two key WP female leaders.

Despite the ferocious attacks launched against him by WP leaders one after another, Mr Choo remained calm and did not retaliate in kind.

There are no immediate comments from Mr Low or other WP leaders on Mr Choo’s clarification.

DPM Teo asked Hougang voters if WP is taking them for granted

Posted by temasektimes on May 21, 2012

Speaking at the PAP’s first election rally last night, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean asked Hougang voters if they have been taken for a ride by the Workers’ Party over its handling of the Yaw Shin Leong sex scandal.

Ex-Hougang MP Yaw Shin Leong was sacked by WP in February this year for his failure to address swirling rumors around his alleged extramarital affairs with multiple married women, including two key female leaders, triggering a by-election to be called in Hougang less than a year later.

However, WP has yet to give a full account of what happened to Hougang residents and DPM Teo described WP Chief Low Thia Kiang as acting as if “nothing has happened” and is “pulling on the emotions” of voters.

“Hougang residents should consider carefully, and not just accept any candidate that WP is sending to them. You have scrutinised Desmond Choo very carefully. Scrutinise the candidate that they send to you very closely as well,” DPM Teo said.

DPM Teo also took a jibe at WP’s candidate for the by-election Png Eng Huat asking why WP did not nominate him as a NCMP in Parliament and chose his younger counterpart in the East Coast GRC team Gerald Giam instead.

“If he was their best man, why didn’t they choose him? Is Hougang so special, that the WP is sending you a candidate that they themselves decided not to send to Parliament, when they had the chance?” DPM Teo asked.
