Malaysian scholar Alvin Tan: I will not pay a SINGLE cent to NUS if I am expelled

Posted by temasektimes on October 19, 2012

Singapore may have nurtured him painstakingly for FREE in the last ten years to enable him to study in NUS Faculty of Law, reportedly one of the top ten Law schools in the world, but ASEAN scholar from Malaysia Alvin Tan Jye Yee doesn’t seem to appreciate what Singapore has done for him, or at least Singaporean taxpayers who financed his studies.

Alvin Tan disgraced and embarrassed NUS by putting up photos and videos of him having sex with a girlfriend (or sex buddy?) on his personal blog which sparked a massive outcry in both Singapore and Malaysia.

Born to a relatively wealthy family in Malaysia, Alvin Tan came to Singapore at 14 years of age on an ASEAN scholarship to study in Sin Ming Secondary School. He subsequently went on to study in Raffles Junior College before being accepted into NUS Law when countless of native Singaporeans were unable to obtain a place.

In an interview with the Malaysian media, Alvin Tan said nonchalantly that he doesn’t really care a hoot about what NUS think as his tuition fees and living expenses in Singapore are all ENTIRELY paid for by Singapore taxpayers:

“My scholarship saved me $50,000 in tuition fees and $6,000 in living expenses yearly. I do not have to pay a single cent in Singapore,” he proclaimed.

When asked if he is worried he may get expelled from NUS for his ‘exploits’, Alvin Tan said:

“I don’t really care if NUS take action against me. I am prepared to be expelled. Anyway, I have set up my own company here (in Malaysia) and is financially secure.”

When told that he will need to pay back his tuition fees if he is expelled, Alvin Tan retorted in a callous manner:

“I will NOT pay a SINGLE CENT to NUS if I am expelled and what can they do to me?”

Alvin Tan is currently in Singapore and will be attending a disciplinary hearing convened by NUS on 31 October. Going by the past example of NUS PRC scholar Sun Xu who hurt the feelings of Singaporeans by calling them ‘dogs’, the pro-foreigner NUS is unlikely to expel Alvin Tan other than to give him the usual ‘counseling session’ to ‘wayang’ to the public.

In the meantime, Alvin Tan can continue to laugh all his way to the bank with the FREE education he received over ten years here before leaving Singapore for good upon graduation.

Tey Tsun Hang as district judge in 2002: Onus on the male adult to exercise restraint, discipline and self-control

Posted by temasektimes on July 28, 2012

Disgraced NUS Law Professor Tey Tsun Hang who was charged with 6 counts of corruption for obtaining sexual gratification from his student Darinne Ko Wen Hui in 2010 once presided over a sex offence case involving a minor in 2002.

Then full-time NSman Yeo Boon Shiong was sentenced to six years and nine months in jail and ordered to be given six strokes of the cane by Tey for having sex with a 14 year old girl.

In his sentencing, Tey said sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 14 is considered rape, even if she consents.

“The law is clear on this and ‘places the onus on the male adult to exercise restraint, discipline and self-control,” he added. (read more here)

It is an irony that Tey failed to practice what he preaches and got into a sexual relationship with his student. As a tutor and mentor, it is a shame that he did not exercise restraint, discipline and self-control and fell into a honey-trap which brings disrepute not only to his profession, but shame to his family as well.

NUS Law Prof charged with obtaining sexual favors from student Darinne Ko Wen Hui

Posted by temasektimes on July 27, 2012

National University of Singapore (NUS) associate professor from the Law Faculty Tey Tsun Hang has been charged in court over the sex-for-grades case this morning.

The 41 year old faces six corruption charges for allegedly showing favour to his student, Darinne Ko Wen Hui (pic below), between May 2010 and July 2010.

According to court documents obtained by the media, Tey reportedly gave Darinne better grades in return for sex on two occasions.

Tey also received a Mont Blanc pen worth S$740 and tailor-made shirts from Darinne who paid one of Tey’s bills amounting to almost S$1,300.

Despite Darinne being the one who approached Tey to offer sex in exchange for better grades, she has not been charged for any offences yet.

The 23 year old is currently working as a pupil in an established local law firm, thanks to the ‘A’ grade she obtained in her final year elective in exchange for the sexual services she provided to her law professor who now faces the unsavory prospect of being thrown into jail.

In an email sent out to the media on Friday morning, Tey said he stands by his academic principles and that he has always pursued his academic writing in good faith, with no ill intent.
