WP veteran Poh Lee Guan expelled from Workers Party over by-election fiasco

Posted by temasektimes on July 19, 2012

Workers Party veteran leader Poh Lee Guan, a party stalwart and loyalist for more than ten years, was expelled from the party with effect from 10 July.

In a short comment posted on its Facebook, the Workers Party said the expulsion was carried out on the grounds set out under Article 22 of the WP Constitution.

Under this article, the Executive Council can expel a member from membership if it is satisfied that the conduct of this member is contrary to the principles or aims or objects of the Party or prejudicial to the welfare of the Party.

Dr Poh courted controversy when he collected a political donation certificate during the Hougang by-election without the party’s approval which brought WP into disrepute.

He contested in the 2001, 2006 and 2011 General Election where his team garnered 42 percent of the votes last year in Nee Soon GRC.

The Workers Party appeared to be self-imploding from within with the departure of Dr Poh. Besides him, former Hougang MP Yaw Shin Leong was expelled by WP in February and three other members of the WP East Coast Team in 2011 have also left.

Despite their fiery speeches during the rallies, the performance of WP MPs in parliament have been most disappointing so far, prompting many disgruntled netizens to dub it as the PAP’s ‘B team’ since even the PAP backbenchers are more vocal than the ‘opposition’ in fighting for the interests of Singaporeans.

An Open letter to all Hougang residents from a WP supporter: Let’s create history on 26 May

Posted by temasektimes on May 24, 2012

On 26 May 2012, you have the power to create history by giving the Workers’ Party and the Opposition Movement in Singapore, the highest ever votes (make it at least 95% in favor of WP) in the Hougang By-Election. You will stand tall and proud in the eyes of all Singaporeans and your votes at the ballot box will forever be remembered as the Opposition’s “Finest Hour” in the history of Singapore and remembered by future generations of Singaporeans of how the good & wise men and women of Hougang defeated the rich and mighty PAP Ministers and their party!

So, please do the right thing and thrash the hell out of Desmond Choo and the PAP. All the people who support the Opposition Movement in Singapore rely on you to deal a knockout blow to the PAP government and to make our voices heard loud and clear.

The Prime Minister said that an election is a very serious business. What the heck was he thinking when he fielded Tin Pei Ling to stand in Marine Parade, when there were definitely plenty of qualified and better candidates available? Was he taking the residents of Marine Parade for granted or was he doing it out of blind loyalty for his principal private secretary, who incidentally is the husband of Tin Pei Ling?

The Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean foolishly questioned whether the Workers’ Party were sending their best man, Png Eng Huat in the interests of Hougang residents? Marine Parade residents deserve the best candidate from the PAP in the last General Election. Was Tin Pei Ling the best candidate that the PAP with all its resources and manpower could field? So, tell me did the PAP sent their best woman, Tin Pei Ling in the interests of Marine Parade residents? It will be remembered as the greatest joke in the history of politics in Singapore to put her into Parliament. And why do you not contest in Hougang in this by-election and put your money where your mouth is, by putting forth yourself for this election rather than sending Desmond Choo? You would have gained more respect for your action.

And what is Integrity? Integrity means not paying yourself millions of dollars in salary and 26 months bonuses when the majority of Singaporeans are paid peanuts. Integrity means having the conscience not to accept such obscene salaries and doing the right thing by resigning from this government, which is clearly driven by greed of money and not by service, when it is obvious that first world governments do not demand that kind of salaries.

Desmond Choo said he will be an independent voice for you in Parliament. Does he think the Hougang voters are fools to believe in such empty words? Remember, many PAP ministers and Members of Parliaments went to Parliament thinking they could be independent voices but look at them today. They are just blind followers of the PAP party with no independent voices of their own.

Dear good and wise men and women of Hougang, this is your moment to hold your heads high and show the PAP that you are not to be pushed around and make it loud and clear to them that your sacrifices were not in vain; and remember all the unequal treatment you suffered in the hands of the PAP government for the past 20 years, which will not be easily forgiven and forgotten and that you have in your hands the power to punish the PAP once again at the polls. At this ‘Final Hour’ you will not be swayed and you shall never surrender your beloved Hougang, after you have held it for the Workers’ Party for so long. Remember, one more opposition voice in Parliament is very important for the Workers’ Party and the Opposition Movement in Singapore to check on the conduct and abuse of power of the PAP, whereas the defeat of the PAP in Hougang is just a number to the PAP. All of Singapore will salute you for your courage and forever remember this day and you, the people of Hougang, will all be rewarded one day for all your years of loyalty. Good luck. God Bless you & your family!

GEORGE TAN

WP ‘mole’ still in CEC says: I do not want WP to send the WRONG candidate into parliament again

Posted by temasektimes on May 24, 2012

The WP ‘mole’ who leaked the confidential minutes of the WP CEC meeting to elect a candidate from the East Coast GRC team for the NCMP post to the media is still in the party’s CEC, much to the blissful ignorance of WP!

In an exclusive interview with a free SPH tabloid, the mole insists he is helping WP and not sabotaging its candidate Png Eng Huat as alleged by WP Chief Low Thia Kiang earlier:

“I do not intend to harm the Workers Party. I do not want the WP to send another wrong candidate into Parliament”

When asked if the WP already know it’s him, he replied:

“If they know it’s me, I fear for myself. But I don’t think they know it’s me.”

The ‘mole’ said he does not intend to leave the Workers Party and is concerned that Low Thia Kiang will send another wrong candidate into Parliament after his protege Yaw Shin Leong.

“I am afraid Mr Low will regret his decision later….My aim is to prevent the party from sending dishonest candidates into Parliament,” he explained.

The seat of Hougang was left vacant after its ex-WP MP Yaw Shin Leong was sacked in February this year for his failure to address swirling rumors around his alleged extramarital affairs with multiple married women including two key WP female leaders who contested in the General Election last year.

WP has been wrecked by bitter in-fighting since the last GE with four candidates resigning from the party, the latest being Mr Sajeev Kamalasanan who contested in Nee Soon GRC.

Hougang voters should look beyond the usual emotional antics played by Workers Party to deceive them

Posted by temasektimes on May 24, 2012

The Workers Party’s rally on Tuesday night (pic left) was disrupted by a heavy downpour. Instead of ending the rally immediately and dispersing the crowd, WP leaders ‘soldiered’ on in the rain and was thoroughly drenched. As expected, the scene was captured on camera and spread throughout cyberspace to highlight their ‘dedication’.

This is the same old emotional trick used by WP time and again to rally their core support base and to portray their candidates as ‘selfless, dedicated and loyal patriots’.

Yaw Shin Leong played the same record during an election rally last year, giving a rousing speech in Teochew to galvanize the crowd, some of whom were reportedly moved to tears. Less than a year later, he left Hougang residents in the lurch and caused a by-election to be called after failing to address rumors about him being ‘romantically’ involved with two key WP married female leaders.

Any fine orator can give a rousing speech to inspire the crowd. Witness Hitler who managed to rally the Germans to his cause with his fiery speeches. Anybody can stand soaked in the rain motionless for hours to win public sympathy. You do not need a ‘Best Actor’ to do that. But beyond these emotional antics, what else can WP offer Hougang?

WP wants Hougang residents to preserve the ‘bastion’ of democracy in Singapore, so as to speak, but it already has five MPs and two NCMPs in Parliament. Will Png Eng Huat make a difference?

It is not the quantity of opposition MPs, but their quality which counts. In the 1980s, one Joshua Benjamin Jeyaretnam was enough to ‘shake’ the entire cabinet whenever he made a speech. Now, we have ‘opposition’ MPs who conveniently plagiarized articles from anonymous online sources to be their parliamentary speeches.

JBJ fought tooth and nail for Singaporeans and irritated former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew so much that he once told former President Devan Nair and he could not wait to see the last of him.

WP MPs have offered only token opposition to the PAP policies and offered nothing different. Their proposed salary scheme for political leaders differed little from the PAP and all voted ‘Aye’ to the PAP’s Budget. Even the PAP backbenchers and Nominated MPs are more vocal than them.

Given the dismal performance of the WP MPs in parliament, what difference does it make if we replace them with a bunch of dummies? Does our august house require another dummy in parliament who does not seem to remember or know what he saying?

Besides harping on its ‘twenty year track record’ in Hougang, WP doesn’t have any concrete plans to take the constituency forward.

The PAP candidate for Hougang Desmond Choo has done much more for Hougang in a year than its ex-MP Yaw Shin Leong. He managed to set up a job hub, a free legal clinic and a TCM clinic for elderly residents, among others.

Low Thia Kiang accused Mr Choo of using taxpayers’ monies to paste ‘gold’ on his fact, but in reality, Mr Choo did not spend a single cent of public monies on these social welfare projects which were tied up with external non-government agencies like the Criminal Association of Lawyers.

What did WP do other than whining time and again like an old broken recorder that the government has been unfair to them? Nobody is stopping its MPs from soliciting funds from elsewhere. Nobody is preventing WP from collaborating with external agencies and certainly nobody can dictate to WP what it can and cannot do in Hougang.

If an outsider like Mr Choo can do so much for Hougang within so short a period of time, what has WP been doing for the last 20 years other than shouting some empty slogans to ‘slap’ (or kiss?) the government?

Singapore was built by leaders who walked the talk, not just talk, talk, talk and stand in the rain to cry father and cry mother.

Come this evening, the lead actor Low Thia Kiang will take to the stage again to tug at the heart-strings of Hougang voters, reminding them again of the strong ‘bond’ they share with him and perhaps shed a fake crocodile tear or two to move their hearts.

Singaporeans are largely soft-hearted people and there will be some who will be tricked by WP’s grand ‘wayang kulit’ again. Not too much hard work to earn a $15,000 monthly salary for somebody who reportedly had a few failed business ventures in the last ten years.

Hougang resident: Let’s have a first-world Hougang before we talk about a first-world Parliament

Posted by temasektimes on May 24, 2012

Dear fellow residents of Hougang,

In this coming Saturday, thousands of us will be going to the polling stations to cast our votes again, hardly a year after we last did. Before we decide on who to vote for, we should all ask ourselves three basic questions.

How does this by-election come about? What do we want and when do we want them? Who can best serve our needs?

How does this by-election come about?

During the last General Election, WP leader Low Thia Khiang chose his protege Yaw Shin Leong (YSL) to compete in Hougang. He openly declared that YSL was a person of integrity, honest, capable, etc. We gave both of them our wholehearted support and elected YSL to be our voice in Parliament. Sadly, he did not even have a chance to walk into Parliament House.

Before the first Parliament sitting, it was revealed that he had been involved in a sex scandal with some of his Party members. He was sacked by his own Party and disqualified from Parliament. That is why we are having this by-election. This is a betrayal of our trust in the WP. Should we believe in Low Thia Khiang and the WP again?

What do we want and when do we want them?

Enough of all those political rhetoric about democracy, first world Parliament, etc. What we really need for our beloved Hougang are upgrading and development programs. It’s time to discard our political burden. It’s time to progress like the other constituencies. Let’s have a first-world Hougang before we talk about a first-world Parliament. Hougang should have the latest amenities and facilities like the other constituencies. They are what we need, and need now.

Who can best serve our needs?

The PAP candidate Desmond Choo has been with us for only about a year now. Despite not being our elected MP, he has done more than the elected one who is nowhere to be seen now. In fact, in some areas, Desmond has accomplished what all the WP MP’s we have helped to get into Parliament over the 20+ years have not.

Who is Png Eng Huat? How many of us know him before the start of this by-election? How much do we really know about him besides what we hear from Low Thia Khiang? Don’t forget, he had said the same thing about his ex-protege YSL. Desmond will be able to work closely with the government for all the progress that we need to make. The choice before us is crystal clear.

Fellow residents of Hougang, vote wisely. Vote for Progress, not Politics.

Majulah Hougang! Majulah Singapura!

Desmond Choo and Rotary Club to roll out ‘Friendlier Homes Project’ to help needy elderly Hougang residents

Posted by temasektimes on May 24, 2012

PAP candidate for Hougang Desmond Choo (pic left) will be collaborating with the Rotary Club to roll out a ‘Friendlier Homes Project’ to help needy elderly residents in Hougang.

Mr Choo has spent the last few months walking the ground in Hougang and talking to residents to identify their needs before submitting a proposal to the Rotary Club of Singapore for its consideration.

Though Mr Choo lost to WP’s Yaw Shin Leong in the May General Election last year, he started work in Hougang immediately after his defeat and had been working hard in the last one month, especially so after Yaw went ‘AWOLed’ after he was sacked from WP for his failure to address swirling rumors about his alleged extramarital affairs with multiple married women including two key WP female leaders.

In a letter addressed to Mr Choo, the President of the Rotary Club of Singapore Tapan Kumar Rao wrote that he was impressed by Mr Choo’s involvement in identifying the needs of Hougang elderly residents and in campaigning for them to get involved in improving their lives.

The long-term projects involved raising funds to retrofit toilets to make them friendly for the elderly and an ‘adopt a grandparent’ program to bridge the young and old in society.

Rotary Club is a non-government organization which is not owned or linked to the government in anyway. It obtains its funds largely from well-wisher and donation drives.

[Source: Facebook]

Some responses from Hougang residents on Mr Desmond Choo’s Facebook page:

“He didn’t use Tax Payers money to help the needy, he didn’t ask for any funds from his Party to spend on Hougang residents, his action attracted all the charitable organisations to come forward willingly to help and support his plans. Rotary Club’s letter is a good testimonial. Why are we still doubting him?” – Jimmy Cheang

“A job well done! we’re seeing more initiatives in Hougang even before Desmond is voted in than we have for Aljunied after WP promised to do better than the previous party… perhaps some people should just stop boasting about the new talents they have AND PUT SOME WORDS INTO ACTION. we don’t need lip service in Singapore. we need people who truly want to serve, and not say they want to serve every 5 yrs after submitting their nomination papers! Good job Desmond Choo! You’re the best choice for Hougang!” – Kong Junjie

“朱倍庆辛苦奔波为贫困的后港居民谋求福利,这本来就是某某某需要做而没有做的义举,唉!等到朱先生做到了,他们才来冷嘲热讽,太过份了。枉费后港居民支持了他们二十年!” – Angelia See

PAP supporters in Hougang ‘intimidated’ by fanatical WP supporters

Posted by temasektimes on May 23, 2012

Though they are confident of a victory in the Hougang by-election, fanatical WP supporters are still going all the way out to secure support for the Workers Party, including resorting to hooliganism to intimidate Hougang voters who dared to criticize WP in cyberspace!

One day after WP leaders rained baseless, vicious and malicious attacks on the PAP candidate in Hougang Desmond Choo, WP supporters followed up with a smear campaign to discredit and demolish his character with one Seah Ee Onn claiming that Mr Choo had tried to ‘buy’ the vote of his grandmother.

The antics of WP supporters prompted Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean to express his disappointment and dismay:

“Those who claim to be supporters of the Workers’ Party dragged in their grandmothers, made all sorts of wild accusations, even unfortunately tried to capitalise on a tragic incident to make voters angry and emotional.”

Besides Seah, other WP supporters have also been hurling all kinds of wild, baseless and defamatory allegations at Mr Choo and even those who tried to defend him are not spared.

Two days ago, we published an article on young Hougang voters being disillusioned with WP which showed a conversation between three of them on Facebook.

They have since been ‘intimidated’ by WP supporters and have written to us to remove their particulars:

One Hougang resident wrote:

“My family and I have been harassed incessantly by WP supporters in both the online and real world after we expressed our desire to switch our support. My mother doesn’t even dare to go out now as her neighbors will keep exerting pressure on her. Is WP some kind of secret society? Their supporters are really frightening.”

WP leaders have been urging Hougang residents to vote for the party to preserve ‘democracy’ in Singapore, but democracy involves freedom of choice and it appears that WP supporters have been forcing their choice on others who do not share the same political views as them.

We advise Hougang residents who have been threatened or harassed by any WP leader, member or supporter to lodge a police report immediately.

Low Thia Kiang: Recent ‘events’ were made to ‘sabotage’ Png Eng Huat

Posted by temasektimes on May 23, 2012

Recent ‘events’ were manufactured intentionally to damage the party and ‘sabotage’ its candidate for the Hougang by-election Png Eng Huat, said WP Chief Low Thia Kiang.

Speaking during an election rally last night, Mr Low urged voters not to be ‘distracted’ by the NCMP ballot saga which started when Mr Png told the media that he did not consider himself for the NCMP post as he was ‘against’ it.

“I actually took my name out of the ballot for the NCMP post. Because I have a personal stand against the NCMP scheme, so that’s why my name wasn’t in the ballot.”

However, after a WP insider sent the minutes of a WP CEC meeting to the press which revealed that Mr Png’s name was on the ballot, he changed his story and said it was ‘part of the procedure’ for every candidate in the team to be included for consideration in the ‘secret ballot’ by the CEC.

Mr Low admitted that the leaked minutes of the meeting is genuine and produced the NCMP ballot paper to the crowd last night, proclaiming that ALL the names of the East Coast GRC team members were considered for the post.

“This is the ballot which I prepared, with all the names of the team on the ballot paper. Png Eng Huat had told me before and after the General Election that he was strongly against the NCMP scheme and had not wanted to be considered for the NCMP position, just as Eric Tan had told me of his desire to be NCMP. However I still listed the names of the whole East Coast GRC team, because they were all part of the team.”

In the minutes of the WP CEC meeting obtained by the media, the names of Glenda Han and Mohd Fazli, two members of the WP East Coast GRC team were LEFT OUT of the ballot:

Png Eng Huat clarifies: Part of ‘procedure’ for EVERY candidate in the team to be included in ballot for NCMP post

Posted by temasektimes on May 22, 2012

WP candidate for Hougang Mr Png Eng Huat has apologized for causing ‘confusion’ to those who thought he had ‘literally’ omitted his name from the ballot papers.

Mr Png had earlier claimed he did not consider himself for the NCMP post as he was ‘against’ it.

“I actually took my name out of the ballot for the NCMP post. Because I have a personal stand against the NCMP scheme, so that’s why my name wasn’t in the ballot. So I don’t think DPM knows all of these.

However, in an email sent to Lianhe Zaobao, one WP insider revealed that contrary to what Mr Png had said, his name was on the ballot and he received only one vote for the position.

The anonymous source go on to say that Mr Png had never stated he was against the NCMP scheme:

“Nowhere in this meeting did Png Eng Huat indicate to the CEC to remove his name from the ballot. In fact there was one CEC vote for him.”

Speaking to queries from the media during a walkabout this morning, Mr Png reiterated that he had told WP Chief Low Thia Kiang that he did not want to be considered for the NCMP seat, but it was ‘part of the procedure’ for every candidate in the team to be included for consideration in the ‘secret ballot’ by the CEC.

However, in the CEC minutes provided by the informant, the names of other two East Coast candidate Glenda Han and Mohd Fazli were NOT in the ballot:

The WP East Coast GRC team comprised of Eric Tan, Gerald Giam, Png Eng Huat, Glenda Han and Mohd Fazli. Eric Tan resigned from WP after he was sidelined by Gerald Giam for the NCMP position while Mohd Fazli left a few days after Yaw Shin Leong was expelled from the party.

Mr Png declined to comment further and said Mr Low will be addressing the issue during a WP rally in Hougang tonight.

Though Mr Png is the candidate for Hougang, he appeared to be overshadowed by Mr Low who has been doing most of the walking and talking for him.

The seat of Hougang was left vacant after its ex-WP MP Yaw Shin Leong was sacked from the party for his failure to address swirling rumors around his alleged extramarital affairs with multiple married women, including two key WP female leaders.

Regardless of the truth, the result of the vote does reveal that Mr Png wasn’t that highly regarded within WP after all.

Lianhe Zaobao: Png Eng Huat received only one vote for NCMP position during WP CEC meeting

Posted by temasektimes on May 22, 2012

Workers Party candidate for Hougang Png Eng Huat appeared to be caught with his pants down after it was revealed that his name was indeed in the ballot to select the best losing candidate in East Coast GRC to fill the position of NCMP in parliament.

During an election speech last Sunday, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean asked if Hougang voters have been taken granted by WP by fielding Png Eng Huat, a candidate who was not even considered for the NCMP position.

This prompted a response by Mr Png who claimed he did not consider himself for the NCMP post as he was ‘against’ it.

Attached below are minutes of the WP CEC meeting obtained from Lianhe Zaobao:

[Source: Lianhe Zaobao]

The minutes showed clearly that Gerald Giam obtained 7 votes, two ahead of Eric Tan and Png received only ONE pathetic vote.

The informant wrote in Chinese that he made the difficult choice to expose the Workers Party because he chose loyalty to Singapore over party allegiance:

“我以一颗下沉的心给你写这信。在我的党和新加坡之间,我必须做非常艰难的选择,但是我选择忠于我的国家,而不是已经变得刚愎自用的党。在过去的一年里,我的良心不安,看着党这些月以来所经历的,我不能选择再保持沉默。”

When contacted by the Zaobao, the Workers Party declined to comment on the issue though party Chairman Sylvia Lim said she will address it at the WP rally tonight.

In the General Election last year, WP sent Low Thia Kiang’s protege Yaw Shin Leong to contest in the ward. Yaw was the treasurer and ‘number three’ man in WP while Png only joined WP in 2008 and hold no key position in the party. In fact, Png was serving in Aljunied GRC before being ‘parachuted’ suddenly into Hougang Constituency Committee in the aftermath of Yaw’s sacking this year.
