“Why are you visiting us dogs?” – netizen asks Baey Yam Keng on his ‘House Visit:’
Posted by temasektimes on February 22, 2012
When PAP MP Baey Yam Keng posted a poster of his House Visit this evening at Blk 462 Tampines North on his Facebook, he certainly did not expect this reply from netizen Kelvin Lim who asked him:
“Why are you visiting us dogs?”
Mr Baey has earlier courted controversy when he told the media that Singaporeans should also reflect on themselves if there is any truth in what the foreigners had said about them, in response to the public outcry triggered by the insensitive remarks posted by NUS PRC scholar Sun Xu on there being ‘more dogs than humans in Singapore’ on his microblog ‘Weibo’ last Saturday.
Though Sun Xu’s comment was widely condemned by Singaporeans, including MediaCorp actor Tay Ping Hui, Mr Baey was one of the few who spoke up publicly in defence for him.
In the interview, Mr Baey said Singaporeans have to accept that, within every community, there will be some who will tarnish the reputation of their peers.
“We (also) need to reflect, are we the way that they described?”
It is not known if Mr Baey’s remarks were ‘misquoted’ or ‘taken out of context’ by the journalist as many netizens are flabbergasted by what he has said.
Ong Yu Shan asked Mr Baey on his Facebook:
“are you saying we Singapore should reflect are we DOGS? You are a MP! Remember as MP, you should responsible of your actions! Is this a responsible act from you?!?!?”
Wong An Kian added:
“disgusted by his comments, I cant believe our mp asked us to reflect when someone scold us dogs”
It appears that Mr Baey has taken the feedback from netizens seriously as he posted a statement shortly thereafter to redeem himself:
It will be interesting to hear what his ‘views’ are later on after his House Visit to Tampines residents (not dogs).
