Brian Tan Cheow Eng now says: I ‘love’ Singaporeans

Posted by temasektimes on March 26, 2012

After sparking a massive public backlash with his infamous remarks on Singaporeans being ‘weak and lazy’, Director of Quality at Fairmont Hotel and Resorts Brian Tan Cheow Eng now make a stunning U-turn and says he ‘loves’ Singaporeans.

n a discussion thread on Facebook about a Swiss lawyer’s comments on Singaporeans not being ‘entitled to jobs in their own country’, Mr Tan argued that it is not the job of the government to protect the jobs of Singaporeans and bemoaned the poor quality of Singapore workers:

“If you do that in the private sector, no company would want to move here just to hire WEAK and LAZY Singaporeans.”

Mr Tan added that foreigners do a lot of jobs that ‘Singaporeans don’t want to do’ and asked Singaporeans to stop behaving like ‘babies’:

“Foreigners do a lot of jobs that Singaporeans don’t want to do. What’s the harm in that? In fact, some industries will collapse without foreigners….If we Singaporeans think we are so good, then don’t be afraid to compete for jobs with the best talent in the world. Come on, stop behaving like babies waiting to be spoon fed all the time!”

His comments riled many netizens, prompting them to write in to Fairmont Hotel to complain about Mr Tan.

In an interview with a local Chinese tabloid today, Mr Tan sounded more conciliatory. He insists that his comments were ‘taken out of context’:

“We all know that the majority of Singaporeans are hardworking and honest and therefore we do not need to be afraid of competition from foreigners.”

However, Mr Tan emphasized that we have to treat every worker equally, regardless of where they come from. He ended the interview by proclaiming his ‘love’ for fellow Singaporeans:

“I am born in Singapore and spend a large part of my life here. I love Singapore and Singaporeans.”

Thanks for posting this up. We have to be able identify the WEAK LINKS in our society! A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Good that Brian is compromising on his (unpatriotic) stand and trying to offer an apology. Let us wait for him to make a stronger statement with regards to the issue of FTs and then we will know to what extent is he changing his heart. If he stops here, we can safely conclude that he is nothing more than simply deflecting public sentiments against him. Just my two cents.

Out of the heart the mouth speaks, so the bible says. Try a better way to show ur remorsefulness for ur insensitive words towards all Singaporeans. Otherwise ur apology is just worth not even a dime.

Singaporeans should collectively come out with list of companies to boycott, for our daily affairs or at corporate level. We are afterall in charge and have our say of who to use to serve us personally or at corporate function level and throw these companies out of business.

Yes, his pathetic attempt at damage control will not fool us.

Singaporeans are still going to boycott Fairmont until he is employment is terminated.

  6. Sorry – too late for him to retract his words – damage done.He deserve to be crucified at all cost – no mercy for him – teach him a lesson he will not forget

This is of FT suck-ups loves trashing local Singaporeans while all the while benefiting for the profit they brings. This guy probably getting some heat from his bosses as the wave of boycotting Fairmont Hotel is rising fast and high!

In my opinion, to offer a half hearted apology after making nasty and offending remarks at his own brethens is itself a mockery of his own moral character and questionable love for Singaporeans.

  10. You people trust what he said. I have doubt about him because if he is remoseful he would have apologize outright, but not to say that he is taken out of context. Doubtful very doubtful of him.

  12. Brian Tan, you are speaking from an “employer’s” point of view I guess. It’s about the “Bottom Line” and making the job easier for the “employers”.

You are a smart guy Brian. Did you look into the cause as to why it is like that when you made that comment?

If you ask foreigners working here from “Developed Nations”, they will tell you that S’poreans work very hard and very long hours. But if you ask foreigner working here from “Developing Nation” it’s a whole different story all together. Worker from “Developing Nations” come here for one reason only. Make as much money as possible and retire back home. These workers only need a few years to achieve this because the money these workers make here is a huge amount compared to what they make from their respective countries from where they come from. Hence, the willingness to work harder than S’poreans.

Reasons for this dilemma is…. The government has spoiled our employers. Why? We are a first world nation with “Third World” labour laws. Go look around all other first world nation that make their own citizens compete with workers from third world nations for the same job with different salary scale. Do you really think this is competition or should I say “Fair” competition? It has been a win win situation for the employers and foreigners and what is left for local? As our good-for-nothing Labour chief Lim Swee Say says….. “Save Jobs”. Save jobs for who? Employers?

This is to Brian and all Employer who thinks like Brian. If you love S’pore and S’poreans, don’t threaten the government to go elsewhere. We need you. You have lived here with all of us. It is a beautiful country indeed. Worth preserving. Ask yourself, Would you want your children to live in a country with so much foreigners or all you care is the bottom line? Would you like to see your employees “living life” rather than work till they drop everyday? Employees here have family too. They are not like foreigners whose primary purpose is to make money. Look at other first world nations and see how their workers are treated. What labour rights do they have. So much can be said of our Labour Chief. What a disappointment.

I don’t think the employees are asking too much. The goal that employees are looking for is “FAIRNESS”. Fairness in salaries and work condition to standards of living in a first world nation.

      Well said.

I want to suggest to MOM to implement laws to protect Singaporeans from being taken advantage of.

My suggestion: Business has to prove that they cannot hire Singaporeans before they can eligible to go for FTs. This can be done by proof of ads or hiring certified recruitment agencies to do that processes.

These are happening in countries already in the west and I heard Malaysia is also practising this.

MOM can set up committees consisting of ordinary professionals ( change the members quarterly) .. to evaluate the applications for FTs. Because I can sense that the MOM staff may not have enough knowledge and understanding of the industries.. Let True Blue Singaporeans come into MOM as Volunteers to help them police some of these applications. Singaporeans help Singaporeans.

      • Yes, that’s one way of doing it.

But we already have mechanisms in place to do that. Like I said, the “Unions” are not doing the job that they are suppose to because the head of the unions is from the government itself. The unions need to be an independent entity so as to not have any interest with the government but to the workers. The Unions should work “With” and not “For” the government and employers.

Unlike other countries, Singapore is a very stress country where we have to work long hours just to earn a salary. Having to compete with PRs for jobs are bad enough, this moron doesnt know that he is spitting shit. Now we all know, he hasnt seen the other part of the “world” yet..

Brian Tan should be sacked and never be allowed to be employed in Singapore in any industry.
Then let him think on what he said.
Let him go compete to wash dishes and clean tables and seek jobs that “no Singaporeans” want to do.
As what someone above posted .. “jiao wei”.
