Singaporeans late for work as SMRT hit by MASSIVE train delays again this morning due to ‘train fault’

Posted by temasektimes on April 17, 2012

Even as an inquiry is ongoing to determine the cause of two MRT breakdowns last year December, SMRT continues to be besieged by problems one after another.

Less than 12 hours after a train was stalled at Clementi MRT station for 20 minutes due to a ‘train fault’, trains to Pasir Ris along the East-West line were delayed for 30 minutes this morning as a result of a ‘train fault’ yet again, causing many Singaporeans to turn up late for work and school.

One commuter Shaik Jaffar tipped us off with a photo showing a packed station at Jurong East due to a ‘train breakdown’:

Another commuter took a snapshot of the situation at Boon Lay MRT station where a sign was replaced informing commuters that the train to Pasir Ris would be delayed for ’15 minutes’ due to a ‘train fault’ at Jurong East:

Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew has earlier said in Parliament that ‘minor’ disruptions less than 30 minutes are ‘unavoidable’:

“We will try and minimise as much as possible the major disruptions and to keep them in check. But I think it is unavoidable that a system that is as heavily utilised as ours is today will not face any disruptions. Every day there are about 2.7 million passenger trips. We are running thousands of train trips for more than 18 hours a day. And I dare say that there is no way you can prevent disruptions from occurring.”

The Temasek Times is the FIRST and ONLY news site to report on the latest train delay. As usual, there are no official announcements from SMRT or reports from the state media on the latest train delay and disruption in service to save the blushes of the authorities.

Some responses on Facebook:

“I reached JE at 735am. But i took more than 1 hour to reach Clementi mrt station at about 855am.” Grace Yu

“Bedok station pack like sardine, unable to board the train for the last 20mins…..” – Andrew Tan

“Was at Boon Lay Mrt from 7.20am till 8am, train did not move, announcement of delay came much later and there was human jam too, no choice had to go out and call for cab spent clost to $30 bucks + ERP, peak charges etc to get to work 1 hr later!!! Hate this!!” – Kavitha Singaram

“Tell me about it man I was affected on the boon lay track. Took me 1 hour and 15 mins to reach raffles place from boon lay!!!! Damn!!!!” – Jonathan Wong

“Train from pasir ris down also damn crowded. All of us packed together like sardines and breathing in each other’s shampoo and BO.” – Debbie Lau

I was at JE Station at around 7:40am, the train on the eastbound platform was just standing there… looked like the coupling holding 2 of the carriages together had given way. There were people stuck inside the train cos the train doors were not aligned with the platform protection screens.

Why do they keep coming up with excuses and beg for understanding that these things happen???

No!!!! These things should never have happen at east not this frequent. How long is our MRT since their birth??? And no, they are not unavoidable if the people do their due diligence.

Japan, US train system last much longer than us. If what our authorities says is correct then they would be having breakdown at this frequency much earlier than us.
