A Ministry spokesperson has confirmed receiving an official request from the Town Council, but declined to comment if it will be approved.
In an interview with Lianhe Zaobao, MP for Potong Pasir Sitoh Yih Pin revealed that the Town Council was not in ‘good shape’ when he took over in the aftermath of the General Election last year.
The current upgrading works which will be completed in 2014 will cost the Town Council around 870 million dollars.
Mr Sitoh also denied plans to merge Potong Pasir Town Council with neighboring Bishan-Toa Payoh Town Council to resolve the financial difficulties faced by it.
“Even if we merge with Bishan-Toa Payoh, it would not allow us to use its funds too,” he said.
Potong Pasir has been an opposition ward since 1984 when it was won by veteran opposition politician Chiam See Tong. Mr Sitoh won the constituency last year by a razor-thin margin of 114 votes against Mr Chiam’s wife Lina Loh.
Since taking over Potong Pasir, Mr Sitoh has won the praise of its residents for his hard work and dedication. He recently set up a $1 million community fund to help needy residents in the constituency.
