Potong Pasir Town Council requests MND to allow it repay lift upgrading funds over nine years

Posted by temasektimes on April 21, 2012

Potong Pasir Town Council has sent in a request to the Ministry of National Development to allow it repay the expenses incurred in upgrading the lifts in its estates over a period of nine years.

A Ministry spokesperson has confirmed receiving an official request from the Town Council, but declined to comment if it will be approved.

In an interview with Lianhe Zaobao, MP for Potong Pasir Sitoh Yih Pin revealed that the Town Council was not in ‘good shape’ when he took over in the aftermath of the General Election last year.

The current upgrading works which will be completed in 2014 will cost the Town Council around 870 million dollars.

Mr Sitoh also denied plans to merge Potong Pasir Town Council with neighboring Bishan-Toa Payoh Town Council to resolve the financial difficulties faced by it.

“Even if we merge with Bishan-Toa Payoh, it would not allow us to use its funds too,” he said.

Potong Pasir has been an opposition ward since 1984 when it was won by veteran opposition politician Chiam See Tong. Mr Sitoh won the constituency last year by a razor-thin margin of 114 votes against Mr Chiam’s wife Lina Loh.

Since taking over Potong Pasir, Mr Sitoh has won the praise of its residents for his hard work and dedication. He recently set up a $1 million community fund to help needy residents in the constituency.

Many old residents n myself Hv waited v.long for this lift upgrade. We are the last to upgrade if u can see most of our neighbors around us. Its no use winning a vote n not seeing yr promises fulfilled. The old folks in our lor 8 are really ageing n many couldn’t come down to walk around. Chn go to Sch n work. They need assistance n there’s nobody to bring their down. If u can pity them like me u will be compassionate towards them. I hope u can do a gd job if only u listen carefully to our problems. Tks.

I believe that you may merge on with the nearest Bishan-Toa Payoh TC then………It is for the good as it is much closer to PP…………..
But I do doubt if with you alone then it might be some independent move……..But not bad, hope that MND will accept the offer then by 2014,I’ll see PP in a perfect shape……..Then,will you get to merge with Bishan-Toa Payoh then to make it more perfect????
