In a sign that the Workers Party is confident of its chances in Hougang, its candidate Png Eng Huat is abandoning his Facebook page barely a few days after it was started.
In a short statement posted on his Facebook page two days ago, Mr Png admitted he is a Facebook novice and added that he will not use the Facebook page until the by-election is over:
While politicians have been using social media to connect with young voters in Singapore, Mr Png doesn’t seem to find the need to do so as he can count on the Workers Party’s ‘safe bank’ of votes in Hougang – hardcore supporters who will vote for the party no matter who the candidate is.
According to party insiders, WP will be focusing on walkabouts to reach out to Hougang voters in the old fashioned way and it is very confident of retaining their support in spite of the Yaw Shin Leong sex scandal.
Meanwhile, PAP candidate Desmond Choo has been updating his Facebook page several times a day to reach out to the young voters in Hougang.
Despite his best efforts, many political observers has written his chances off, including its ‘unofficial’ newsletter Yahoo News which predicted an ‘easy victory’ for Mr Png. WP supporters have already popped the champagne to celebrate WP’s victory with some predicting a bigger margin for the party.
The seat of Hougang was left vacant after its ex-WP MP Yaw Shin Leong was sacked from WP for his refusal to address swirling rumors around his alleged extramarital affairs with multiple married women, including two female leaders in WP who contested in the general election last year.
Till today, WP has yet to account to the public of what happened and its leaders have seen no need to do so.
