Tharman is ‘confident’ that the govt has done ‘a lot more’ for low-income families

Posted by temasektimes on June 11, 2012

Singapore will remain ‘strong’ because the government is doing a lot more for the needy in society, proclaimed Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

Speaking during a community event on Sunday, DPM Tharman said it’s important to keep the community close amidst an uncertain global economic outlook.

“What is very important for Singapore is that the community remains strong. And I feel quite confident that the government is doing a lot more especially for low-income folks and our senior citizens – some important new initiatives in this year’s budget, and in the last few years – we’re doing a lot more,” he said.

DPM Tharman added that Singapore has the strengths and ability to ensure that Singapore remains a strong and vibrant society no matter what happens elsewhere:

“Keep our community strong, and we will retain our confidence in our future, because we have strengths, we have abilities, we have the resources, to be able to plan for the future, invest in our young, take care of our old, and make sure that Singapore, whatever happens in the world, remains as strong and vibrant society.”

In which area, Sir? I still see so many old folks rummaging trash cans to sell, pushing heavy trolleys in supermarkets, clearing and cleaning hawker stalls after the young who have eaten… Come and see at the HDB estates, you will not find them in the luxurious private residential areas!!! And the homeless sleeping in the parks, HDB void decks and under the highways in the middle of the nights…

    • Jardel said

Hi there. Totally agreed. But sorry to say. He lives outside HDB premises and will not know all these. And 60% are still electing them into power for the past 50 odd years. Singaporeans are really a bunch of funny jokers. :D

    • Rustle said

Where are their children? These old folks have no children or their children abandoned them?

Sir, is doing “a lof more” equal to “doing enough”? You can visit any neighbourhood and see grannies picking up cardboards for a living daily. Do you know this? Oh, you are a multi millionaire to ignore these…sorry. Come next GE2016, you would just need to give them free Nasi Lemak to buy their votes again, ain’t I right?

    Shameful. Despicable.

  3. His bullshit is as obvious as his bald head.

If your citizen life are getting better before GE2016 , u all better pray hard or else your 60.1% might become 50% and later 45%…..hopefully the Leegime can see all the rubbish that they have been doing since taking over from the “swiss standard” minister E.F.

Our perception and experienced still in the negative side for your info…..so no NATO okay ……!!!

    • Jardel said

Hmm…why 50% in the next GE? Let’s be Singaporeans and vote PAP out of government in the next one!!!! Let’s decrease it to 20% or lesser!!! Show them what people power is!!!

      • Rustle said

        Hey, people power sounds pinoy.
And I thought no one likes pinoy here?

      • mahbok tan said

Would love to see those figures…we need to pray hard and work harder to achieve it dear fellow SGporean.

Tharman should really “catch up” with Singaporeans to know the truth about PAP.

if u are doing just 1% effort in the past and 3% now, give yourself a pat on the back for having a 200% surge. perhaps u removed 3 elderly out of rummaging the bins for trash cans with your initiatives such as additional 20k for selling out their HDB. this hdb should be able to keep them away for 1-2yrs. more does not equate enough, i see it is more now, frankly speaking. i don’t bash every shit u say, provided it make sense. u dare to say more, dare u say enough? more than sufficient? our elderly are very happy people? no. 1 in terms of happiness in asia. just put in same effort to making their lives better as those who want to make uni ranking higher, airport ranking higher, port ranking higher. but nope, those other rankings earn $, make elderly happy people cost $ and initiatives that uses $ is a big No-No. u have to raise GST to 20% to fund all this.

u got 5b to throw to IMF (judging by size of economy, we are literally no. 1 again). the number 1 gongkia, u do not have 10% of this for healthcare for people. where did u get this 5b in the first place? it did not drop from sky. we built and worked for it, only to be given away so u get a cushy position in IMF and promote singapore international identity. why bother about international identity and presence when we do not even have a local one.

our needy aunties and uncles still could work at fast food restaurants to get by in the past, but can’t do so anymore as these jobs have been taken by Filipinos!

    to Tharman,
I am not only confident but 101% cocksure that those in govt has done a lot more for themselves than for low income families.

It is sickening for taxpayers to hear this from you because with each passing day, more and more tax payers will realised they are victims similar to a Nigerian Scam, whereby millions of their hard earned tax money are paid to those in govt, but in return they get duds.

Your Ministers always said such statements…”I think”, I feel”, “I am confident”…etc. Don’t you know that this is only one sided? Based on your current polices, I don’t think you know what we are thinking, feeling right now and we just don’t have the confident for our future.

  10. Geo said

    Yes, where specifically Minister?……

I bought my mother to see polyclinic….then governmental hospital…Alexandra Hospital for old folk….bones problem…..given medication to help heal the bones…….do you know how much?…….Spore citizen? and she is not working?…….some drugs so called NON standard drugs not subsidised at all…..many hundreds of dollars!!!!!……………….ridiculous.

let see , next elections what happens if this carry on!!!

The government of Singapore is capturing the financial benefits of its citizens productivity and not providing the public goods and services its people have every right to expect.

  12. Usual PAPie ball-ast but no substance. In essence, he’s saying no change to status quo. So if 61% sinkies remain daft come next GE, they can expect rising transport fares, hikes in PUB and property tax bills, more humongous ministerial pay and widening divide between the elites and the rest of us, more empty PAPie promises, etc., etc..

  13. LkySi said

Tharman is right – government has done much – for the Ministers to line their deep pockets – at tax payers monies

  14. Rustle said

Looks like no one cares about values and filial piety.
You’re telling me that all these old folks do not have any children or grandchildren.
Gee, we’re all looking to the government to be our father and grandfather and maybe undertaker as well.
And tour agencies said more Singaporeans are booking for holidays to Europe??
    Hahaha.

Baldie, I’m sure you’re not doing anything to help better my life and all my low-income families. All we see is you boasting that you are helping. Why don’t you get the reporter to do REAL interviewing of how low-income group needs?

Tharman really needs to “catch up” with reality and explain the following PAP “malfunctions”

    (1) low productivity of Singapore economy
    (2) low birth rate
    (3) depressed local wages
    (4) shortage, “shrinking” and high cost of public housing
    (5) shortage of public buses
    (6) shortage of MRT trains
    (7) shortage of hospitals
    (8) shortage of doctors
    (9) shortage of nursing homes
    (10) shortage of teachers
    (11) shortage of places in schools and universities for Singaporeans
    (12) shortage of jobs for Singaporeans
    (13) foreigners taking jobs away from Singaporeans
    (14) frequent breakdowns of MRT trains
    (15) overcrowded public transport (buses and MRT trains)
    (16) bailout of public transport (failed privatisation)
    (17) frequent 50-year “ponding” (or flooding)
    (18) high inflation (Singapore now more expensive than Hong Kong)
    (19) high cost of education
    (20) high cost of healthcare
    (21) high cost of electricity (another failed privatisation)
    (22) high cost of private transport and fuel
    (23) depleted CPF accounts after buying “affordable” HDB flats
    (24) many CPF accounts below CPF Minimum Sum
    (25) massive (billions) losses of taxpayers’ money by Temasek and GIC

  18. It is not only about doing enough. It’s not only the low income and the aged.
I believe you are doing manageably ok on these issues.

It is about “living a decent live”.

When not knowing if your job is stable.
Will you be under-cut by third world FTs.
    Working very long hours.
    Inflation.

Under these circumstances, how do you “Live Life?”

With our Sg dollar appreciating, why are things still expansive?
Importing would be cheaper isn’t it?
    Where are the profits going?

You need to strike a balance with the Investors and Employers.
I believe this is where the problem lies.
The bottom line is, “FAIR” play.
