Khaw Boon Wan: HDB will not shrink flat sizes

Posted by temasektimes on June 13, 2012

National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan has reassured that Singapore will not follow the examples of Tokyo and Hong Kong and shrink flat sizes.

Mr Khaw was responding to a question posed by a participant during the recently held REACH forum about flat sizes.

“My comment at that dialogue was in response to a question. I was purely stating that HDB plans (flat sizes) based on certain design norms, and as far as I know, it has not changed for the past 15 years,” he said.

He added that as the government wants to ‘maintain a good quality of life’, it does not have any plans to shrink the flats.

However, HDB CEO Cheong Koon Hean had earlier told the media that the shrinking size of public flats has not lowered Singaporeans’ quality of living.

“Our families are smaller. In the old days, we have very large families living in a flat. Today, the family is two, three, four (people),” she said.

these comments would have been funny… if we Singaporeans are not suffering the ill effects from their dumb policies!

Political double-speak….the size of the flat is in relation to the size of the family…floor size per head has not changed….so KBW is right and the HDB is also right….stupid 60%.

agree. how come he didn’t mention about lowering the cost of new flats? how come he didn’t reveal the actual cost of building new flats (per unit)?

I applaud this move to not shrink flat sizes. Spore has more than enough land for living. There are still too many double-storey row houses and consuming too much land. Spore needs to grow into the sky to 50 storey buildings and provide ample landscaped gardens, greenery and facilities between the apartment block.s.

As the population ages, they will spend more time indoors or at their apartpments. So, it is good to provide adequate space for them to relax and not a rabbit hutch.

“I applaud this move to not shrink flat sizes” but the respective area plans extracted from HDB’s website for a standard 4-Rm Model A HDB Flat Unit shows markedly the difference in sizes for units built at different points in time as follows:

-Flat units built from 1993-1995 Block with 4-Room Model A (Total Area = 107sqm)
-Flat units built from 1998-2000 Block with 4-Room Model A (Total Area = 100sqm)
-Flat units built from 2000-2002 Block with 4-Room Model A (Total Area = 90sqm)

Does this not tell you that the total area for a standard 4-Room HDB Unit had shrunk over time from 107sqm (in 1993) to 90sqm (for units built in 2002)?? Isn’t the above trend shows a clear-cut shrinkage in overall area sizes over time???

Doesn’t mean that nowadays our family size is small with only 3 to 4 persons per unit as compared to olden days with family size of 5 to 8 persons therefore, you should use area per person as a measurement instead of the total area space, right?

What a blatant lie & idiot & we are wasting millions of dollars of tax payer monies for this type of clown ka!!!

they will not shrink the size but they will either increase the house shelter size or worse still the price of the flats.

Anyway, flats size has shrink and that resulted in smaller family size not the other way round. Somebody got to get this right! What people want is not shortchanging us and then tell the us it will not change, then decrease in quality again and pacify us by telling people it will not change.

What people want is increase in quality. Why not tell us that the flats will increase in size and price will be lowered instead? Afterall, it is public housing and not some investment product people are buying. Get it right!! As a minister, you do not even know what the people want and cannot even fight for the welfare of the people, tell us why are you even in the office in the first place?

HDB will not shrink flat sizes…everyone in sg knows hdb housing sizes have become smaller. What is he talking about?

Flat size will not shrink, but floor size definitely shrunk. Compared with a 4 RM flat size/price 10 years ago with the current 5 Rm flat. I had a feeling of being Conned by HDB, if it is so called “affordable”, see how many Singaporean have to tie themselves with a 25 Years loan, work ourselves until 65 years, then throw us to some where that are really “affordable”.
