Kong Hee speaks out against charges: I maintain my integrity!

Posted by temasektimes on June 30, 2012

Embattled founder of City Harvest Church (CHC) pastor Kong Hee spoke out defiantly against the charges slapped on him by the prosecutors during a service at Singapore Expo Hall this evening.

Kong Hee was charged together with four other CHC members on Wednesday for misusing the church funds to further the music career of his singer wife Ho Yeow Sun after two years of investigations by the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD)

With his wife up on stage with him, Kong Hee declared loudly:

“I maintain my integrity.”

Hugging his wife on stage to win public sympathy, he added:

“There were times when Sun and I just didn’t know what to do…The past few days have been very challenging. Please know that there are always two sides to a story. I look forward to the day I can tell you my side of the story in court.”

Despite the gravity of the offences allegedly committed by him, CHC members continue to support him as evident by packed crowd of 5,000 people with many banners saying ‘I love Pastor Kong.’

Some members also gave testimonies on the church’s “Crossover Project” started in 2002 supposedly as a way to use Ho’s secular music to connect with people and reach out to non-Christians, which was highlighted by the prosecutors as a destination for CHC’s funds via sham companies in the charge sheet.

CHC had earlier threw its weight behind pastor Kong Hee and expressed disappointment that he and seven other members were suspended from the board by the Commissioner of Charities:

“The people currently in the news are our pastors and trusted staff and leaders who have always put God and CHC first. As a church we stand with them and I believe fully in their integrity.”

Meanwhile, Kong Hee has been tweeting and posting on Facebook to rally his supporters. He had earlier implored them to pray for him on Facebook, but the post has since been deleted.

A church isn’t a family business you know; it is a family, but it’s not a business.

Are the pastor’s relatives high up in the church? Are they the ones with the most powerful positions? Then that is nepotism. A good church will choose the very best people for the job, while a bad church will reward those closest to the pastor with the lucrative positions of power.<

When followers are pressured to give money they can ill afford like school childrens’ pocket allowance or downgrading from 5 to 3 room-flat and telling them that without giving money their worship is empty – it crosses the line. Feeding greed by repeatedly drumming the message that the more you give God will give back ten, sixty fold is using money to buy blessings. If as alleged the lavish lifestyles of individuals using money diverted from church donations is not doing the work of God. Let’s just be aware there are religious teachings that one should not just be indoctrinated to believe blindly without questioning. It applies to everything in life.

I find this statement somewhat of an irony “our pastors and trusted staff and leaders who have always put God and CHC first” and if that is the case why is the S$50million not used to help the poor, the sick and the needy which is God’s teachings instead of being siphoned to the making of sexy music videos to promote the wife of Pastor Kong.?

A true leader admits his wrong doing, says sorry, and vows not to repeat it. What is scary is Con Hee still thinks he hasn’t done anything wrong and continue to mislead his followers. This man is dangerous, should put him to jail for a long time. Lucky my children are not his admirer.

My thoughts after reading the news, the tweets, the fb pages, the blogs, the comments:

when a con-man manages to even con himself into believing what he cons other, he is the master of all con-men.

And when the con-man no longer even recognizes that his own con statements are cons, it is really not his fault, he is really not guilty; it’s the people around him who cheer him on that are guilty.

I state the above expecting lots of criticism. Just as Kong Hee, I wait anxiously for the day when he defends himself in court.

    • changi harvest convicts said

actually the master of all con men is LeeConYou.
who else can convince 81 con men to work for him and still have 60% support ?
who else can pull it off for 50 years ?
Kong Hee can only dream of it, and he will find out on 25th July that this island is not big enough to accommodate himself and Leeconyou.

Possible defenses kong hee will use:

    1. God asked me to move the money. Everything ultimately belongs to him so does not matter

    2. All the evidence are planted by Satan.

    3. Although there were some unusual accounting, it was all for a holy cause “cross over project”. Lost souls are saved from eternal damnation so the end justify the means.

    4. our lifestyle is not funded by the church’s money but proceeds from my wife’s international music career. Some church members are such big fans that they buy 50 CDs each album. I did not coerce them. Don’t believe you ask them.

The sad truth is that many supporters will actually believe it!

Shocking and disgusting. Kong Hee has no integrity and dignity. He’s a devil in sheep’s skin who successfully brainwashed thousands of church sheeple. $50 million of misuse money is titanic and unprecedented in the history of Singapore.

Think about it – there are many other crimes committed by others and persecuted by Singapore law (involving only few hundreds or thousands dollars) and those criminals. Now we’re talking about 50 million dollars.

I trust our judiciary system to deliver the right punishments upon Kong Hee and City Harvest church leaders. They’re a bunch of financial terrorists and should be thrown in jail for life.

  27. What is integrity when Kong Hee is shouting out loud to everyone that he needs and wants the supports of his followers??

Looking at his actions, and compared to a book i read this morning. I believes his is GULITY~~~!!!

there is lesson to be learnt here by singaporean christians. they place too much on materialism and not spirituality aspect of christianity. this could be a wake up call for all christians who genuinely seek GOD. GOD used this occasion probably to wake up the slumbering christians in singapore

  29. not a singaporean christian said

Christians in singapore should limit the posts to those who are christians and barred further non christians, be they muslim, hindus, sikhs, chinese taoists, buddhist, bahais, jews, etc from interfering into the christian issue.. that is the first step. whether you christians how you wanna do with your own pastor is all up to you. be wise when making comments. Even David dared not harmed the LORD’s anointed King Saul when GOD already rejected him to be ruler for the israelis people. (1 samuel 24:4-15). So every individual christians right here in singapore who making comments out of your own intellect here which is of flesh and not of spirit and not out of genuine fear of GOD, …claim no excuse when GOD brings judgment individually to every one of you when a day comes

    • Alamak said

Well, we are talking about a Singaporean facing charges… and he happens to be a Christian pastor. So I think everyone has the rights to talk about him.

      • sean said

true to what you says, but is not proper for non christians to interfere into christian issue because of different belief system and the approach taken. now this involved a tithes to our GOD and those who doesnt have a clue of christian ways may make all kinds of comment that contribute not to a solution but a chaos. similarly i dont think christians should interfere into a mosque/temple if there is a mismanagement or any whatever fraud of the mosque/temple. it should be left to them of the similar belief to rectify it themselves. you may not know that you are making the situation messier than mess

no body sure whether he took the money, how he took it or he took it based on the justifiable reason. only he and GOD knows best whether he took, whether he abused it or whether he really did something under the table. so the judgment from GOD on him is between him and his GOD and not anybody else. if we do not want to be judged by GOD then we should not jump that quickly as to use our judgment hastily against some one when the investigation is still pending. otherwise you will find yourself in the situation like like described in Matthew 7:1-5. we cant comment further than that. as far as christians are concerned, the money which is a form of tithes the christians gave to unto GOD as represented by His presence in a church within church, as His representative, is a example of a biblical obligation of paying 10% unto GOD and church leaders are supposed to take care the tithes for the purpose of expanding GOD;s kingdom on earth because GOD will hold him accountable for the money which symbolically belongs to GOD, which he used for other that for GOD’s purpose. but if a leader took the money for his personal expenditure, then obviously it is a crime and authority to investigate him based investigate from this perspective because the tithes which is a fund are entrusted to him by GOD as a steward on earth on GOD’s behalf (Luke 16). when we judge we judge not according to our human standard which is fallen but according to GOD’s standard and His standard is found in HIs Holy Word, the holy scripture the Bible

    • Peter said

I dont disagree with you regarding your position on judgement, principle of tithing, stewardship etc.

However, the funds in question were not from tithes (used for the running of the church) but free will offerings that members donated to the CHC building fund (charity fund). The members gave these funds as their prayerful and sincere response to God towards the vision presented by the senior leaders of CHC. The issue is whether these funds were misappropriated from the intended purpose and therefore misleading their donors. These charges will be defended as the donors were aware of the ‘cross over’ strategy and furthermore all funds invested were under written, that is, guaranteed. The funds in question were already repaid to the charity well before all this started.

Some of the results of this strategy were over 350,000 people making decisions to receive Jesus Christ as their saviour. As an example, according to church leaders in Taiwan, christian growth in their nation has increased exponentially in the last several years. Many would attribute this growth to the leadership/ministry of Ps Kong and Sun.

    • Peter said

That doesn’t make sense …you could say ‘lack of integrity’ but not good or bad integrity! Integrity is adherence to moral principles; honesty; soundness; wholeness. If you want to be clever in your snide remarks then do some research otherwise your ignorance is displayed for all to see …just like now!

Why Con does not spend most of his time evangelising in the poorest parts of India and Africa, where there are much harvest to be had, is beyond my comprehension. Is he afraid of hardship postings in places where people live on a few dollars a day — if they are lucky. My suspicion is that the Gospel According to Con requires massive funding for various projects and this approach will cut no ice with the impoverished people of India and Africa.

Horus is one of the oldest and most significant deities in ancient Egyptian religion, who was worshipped from at least the late Predynastic period through to Greco-Roman times. Different forms of Horus are recorded in history and these are treated as distinct gods by Egyptologists.[1] These various forms may possibly be different perceptions of the same multi-layered deity in which certain attributes or syncretic relationships are emphasized, not necessarily in opposition but complementary to one another, consistent with how the Ancient Egyptians viewed the multiple facets of reality.[2] He was most often depicted as a falcon, most likely a lanner or peregrine, or as a man with a falcon head.[3]

The earliest recorded form of Horus is the patron deity of Nekhen in Upper Egypt, who is the first known national god, specifically related to the king who in time came to be regarded as a manifestation of Horus in life and Osiris in death.[1] The most commonly encountered family relationship describes Horus as the son of Isis and Osiris but in another tradition Hathor is regarded as his mother and sometimes as his wife.[1] Horus served many functions in the Egyptian pantheon, most notably being the god of the sun, war and protection.

The 2007 conspiracy theory film Zeitgeist: The Movie (Website, Watch online, Wikipedia Entry) states in Part I “The Greatest Story Ever Sold” that major points of the story about Jesus Christ’s birth, life, death and resurrection are not original but are shared with multiple other gods or deities of older religions….

  36. Truth Seeker said

The film first (at around 16min:34sec) presents Horus an Egyptian God representing Light, worshiped around 3000 BC. It list the following attributes which as for I know all also apply for Jesus Christ. The attributes are numbered so they can be referenced later.
    1.Born on December 25th
    2.Born of a virgin
3.Birth was accompanied by a star in the east
4.After his birth was adored by three kings
    5.Teacher at 12
    6.Baptized/Ministry at 30
7.Had 12 disciples he traveled about with
8.Performing miracles: 8a. healing the sick, 8b. walking on water
9.Known by many names: “Lamb of God”, “The Truth”, “God’s begotten(?) Son”, “The Light”, “The good Shepard”
    10.After being betrayed:
    11.was crucified
    12.Dead-for 3 days

The film then claims that these attributes influenced other gods in other cultures over time. It follows a lists of gods/deities together with a listing for each including many but not always all of the above attributes. The listed gods/deities are:
    •Attis (Greece, 1200 BC) — Attributes 1, 2, 11, 12, 13
    •Krishna (India, 900 BC) — Attributes 2, 3, 8, 13
    •Dionysos (Greece, 500 BC) — Attributes 1, 2, 8b + Turning Water into Wine, 9 (“God’s son”, “Alpha and Omega”, …), 13
    •Mithras (Persia, 1200 BC) — Attributes 1, 2, 7, 8, 12, 13, 9 (“The Truth”, “The Light”), Day of worship: “Sunday”

Well, seems like some of us have divert into another topic over here.
I hope everyone do remember, the initial topic over here is solely about Pastor Kong Hee, its not about the religious at all.

If he not a pastor but a spiritual leader in other religious? Are we going to dig out all the history and stories behind all?

The point of Kong Hee, he maybe using the funds, he maybe had plant back the amount before he was charge or after but it doesn’t matter. But the intention of him using the funds, how he used the funds.

Eg: A pickpocket, stole your wallet away. after that u caught him. He return u the wallet with all the cash and items inside. Will you forgive him? U surely do. Now comes the point, did he break the law and make a mistake?

Come let us think for a moment.
