Chan Chun Sing: Singapore could claim soccer gold in SEA games 2015

Posted by temasektimes on July 6, 2012

The Southeast Asia (SEA) Games hosted by Singapore in 2015 may be still three years away, but Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Chan Chun Sing is already ‘counting his chicks before they are hatched.’

Speaking in an interview with the media, the Acting Minister said he is ‘quietly confident’ that Singapore could claim the soccer gold in 2015.

Singapore’s best result in the SEA Games football tournament are the three silvers which the Lions won in 1983, 1985 and 1989.

Former FAS Chairman Mah Bow Tan infamously declared that Singapore could qualify for the World Cup in 2010 back then in the 2000s.

Microwave PM Goh Chok Tong said in 2000 that Singapore can qualify for World Cup. First learn to beat Malaysian state teams. Then think of SEA games. As for World Cup Singapore is Mach years away

Wishful thinking! Quietly confident is one thing, Do you think, with your super scale million dollar salary, you have what it takes to actually make that happen? LMFAO

I hate to pour cold water to this World Cup aspiration. If we work hard, we can achieve, but not so soon in 2015, unless the whole lot of the Man-U or other good euro players migrate to SG & join the national team. The fact that the whole football culture, history, mentality, skills, etc are still not well-developed here. Mind u, all these takes generations to manifest not just by mere talk cock sing song.

May I remind the minister we r not playing with pygmies. We r playing with countries with full time athletes. Unless of course we r anning to import the has beens of English soccer to play for the national squad like we did with table tennis. Don’t we just love to take the skin of other people’s buttocks and put on our faces. Let’s have some pride and develop our own talents. As it is Singaporeans r deprived of work, why don’t we take our young and develop them into world class athletes?

Mah Bow Tan – world cup in 2010.

SAF Officers like Chan like to boast. Still wearing his SAF uniform

Begins by using our home grown talents who are so always around. Committed and talented players are always in Singapore, they will be loyal for this task. Start now and guide and give them opportunities to play and leave the foreign talents alone as they are short term solutions.
