PM Lee: Bugis MRT worksite accident shouldn’t have happened

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has expressed his condolences to families of the two workers who died in the accident at the Downtown Line Bugis worksite on 18 July.
In a comment posted on his Facebook, PM Lee wrote he was saddened by what happened:
“Very saddened to read about the accident at the Downtown Line work site in Bugis yesterday, in which two foreign workers were killed. It should not have happened. My condolences to the families of the two victims.”
He also praised the Singapore Civil Defence Force for undertaking the rescue operations:
“Also, my sympathies for the SCDF firefighters who were injured in the rescue operations there, and in fighting the East Village Hotel fire on Monday. I wish them a speedy recovery. They and all who have responded to the incidents have served bravely and are a credit to the Singapore Civil Defence Force.”
Two workers were killed when the scaffolding they were working on collapsed on them as they were pouring cement into the mould.

(1) low productivity of Singapore economy
(2) low birth rate which started from LKY’s “Stop at 2” policy
(3) depressed local wages
(4) forgetting to plan for the many foreigners allowed into Singapore
(5) shortage, “shrinking” and high cost of public housing
(6) shortage of public buses
(7) shortage of MRT trains
(8) shortage of hospitals
(9) shortage of doctors
(10) shortage of nursing homes
(11) shortage of teachers
(12) shortage of places in schools and universities for Singaporeans
(13) shortage of jobs for Singaporeans
(14) foreigners taking jobs away from Singaporeans
(15) frequent breakdowns of MRT trains
(16) overcrowded public transport (buses and MRT trains)
(17) bailout of public transport (failed privatisation)
(18) frequent 50-year “ponding” (or flooding)
(19) high inflation (Singapore now more expensive than Hong Kong)
(20) high cost of education
(21) high cost of healthcare
(22) high cost of electricity (another failed privatisation)
(23) high cost of private transport and fuel
(24) poor air quality as per WHO Air Quality Guidelines
(25) depleted CPF accounts after buying “affordable” HDB flats
(26) many CPF accounts below CPF Minimum Sum
(27) massive (billions) losses of taxpayers’ money by Temasek and GIC
(28) wasteful purchases by Government agencies like NParks
(29) putting Singaporeans life at risk by allowing rich “yellow trash” to drive in Singapore
Conclusion: LHL shouldn’t have become PM (Principally Mediocre).

I thought all along that the safety controls are very stringently adhered to and sad to say that this incident did not speak well of the people who are supposed to ensure that all safety regulations are complied with. Sad because lives are lost. Hope this is a lesson for all other construction sites to be more vigilant on safety measures to provent loss of lives of those who were there to
make life easier for the people.

How come PM Lee did not indicate similar sadness when our own NS boys died while serving to protect his assets? What about those who commit suicide?

I am enginer by training and work in such dangerous area before……I wlll never allowed my stafff to work under a ”place ” if some ”events” is happening above thier heads….what I mean here is that who know what will and going to happen above thier heads….. as engineer we know that ”design may fail”
Under the downtown line….. the pouring of wet cememt above to form the ”cover after it dry’…as engineer we know that the weight of the we cement is very very heavy when wet…….and we dont use ”quick dry” time…
so this work arrangment is very danger and mishap is waiting to happen……
my question was where is the work safety office ??
How come they allowed such work arrangement ????

For some companies, safety officers only exist on paper. Just like the skilled welders, they exist only on paper. Those doing the actual jobs on site are different people – they are the semi-skilled welders who command lower salary.
