The reading of ‘Square Moon’, a play written by local playwright Wong Souk Yee on the lives of former ISA detainees originally planned for this Sunday 26 August 2012 at the Substation has been cancelled in the last minute, according to NGO ‘Function 8’.
In addition, the play Square Moon originally commissioned for a festival next year has now been taken off the programme, based on the ‘advice’ of the National Arts Council.
In a brief statement posted on its website, ‘Function 8’ wrote:
“Function 8 is greatly disappointed by the turn of events as we have been informed that the government‐funded venues and support for these events will no longer be available to us. On this note, we register our disquiet at the uncalled‐for interference by the authorities.”
Function 8 is an initiative by a group of citizens who strongly believe that there is a need to facilitate the sharing of social, political and economic experiences of those who had, or are eager to contribute to society through reflection and civic discussion.
