President Tony Tan to Singaporeans: I will work hard to realize your ‘dreams’

Posted by temasektimes on September 2, 2012

All Singaporeans will have the opportunities to realize their dreams in life and nobody will be left behind, declared Singapore’s President Dr Tony Tan at his first anniversary.

Dr Tony Tan became the third elected President of Singapore when he secured an overwhelming mandate from Singaporeans against three other rivals in an election last year.

Speaking after the launch of this year’s President’s Challenge Volunteer Drive at the Lions Befrienders on Saturday, Dr Tan reminded Singaporeans that “economic growth is important in building a more caring, compassionate and inclusive society.”

“I will continue to work hard to build a society where Singaporeans will have opportunities to realise their dreams and those in need will not be left behind,” Dr Tan added.

The well-loved people’s President was seen putting the finishing touches on some greeting cards, after which he joined the volunteers to distribute the cards to seniors living in the Bendemeer area.

I refer to “he secured an overwhelming mandate from Singaporeans against three other rivals in an election last year.”
the writer certainly does not understand what “overwhelming mandate” means.

Tony Tan only beat Tan Cheng Bock by a very slim margin, the winning margin was about 0.34 percent of the vote or rather 7,269 votes.
    I won’t call 0.34 percent margin as “overwhelming mandate”…..LOL

Biased writeup will get TT nowhere. Choice of words like “overwhelming mandate” and “the well-loved people’s President” may be quoted out of context. I have nothing personal against our elected President who we must revere with the higest respect but there is a need to review the past records and performance of a person to whom this title is bestowed upon to really appreciate the quality of the person who holds the highest office on this beloved land called Singapore.

    TO ALL PAP’ers,
We want democracy, we want freedom of speech.
If you think you are CLEAN and HONEST, why are you so afraid of Gathering >5 people? Why are you so afraid of Press Freedom? Why are you so Afraid of people Scrutinizing you? Why you control permit to speak in public? Why you have police station beside Speaker corner?
If you are NOT WORRIED, why do you have Internal Security Act?

    BERSIH !!!!!!!

What he actually meant: “I will continue to work hard to build a society where FOREIGNERS will have opportunities to realise their dreams and SINGAPOREANS and those in need will BE LEFT BEHIND.”

Nothing wrong with calling TT a “well-loved President”. After all, didn’t Mark Richmond called President Nathan a “well-loved” President in NDP 2010.

  8. Tortoise said

Sorry, “honest mistake” earlier, I meant NDP 2011.

  9. Why would anybody of the right mind want to have dreams? Dreams are dangerous. Many people were killed, horribly maimed and seriously injured just because they had dreams.
