Howard Shaw sentenced to 12 weeks’ jail for having sex with underage prostitute

Former executive director of the Singapore Environment Council and grandson of tycoon Run Run Shaw, Howard Shaw, has been sentenced to 12 weeks jail for having paid sex with an underage prostitute.

The 41 year old pleaded guilty in June to paying a 17-year-old girl S$500 for sex in October 2010. The prosecution has earlier asked for a three month sentence, saying that the offence warrants a custodial sentence as the minor involved is ‘worthy’ of protection as stated under the law

Adding that the extent of the culpability depends on whether Shaw tried to verify the minor’s age, the prosecution pointed out the accused took absolutely no steps to ascertain the girl’s age.

Shaw’s lawyer Harpeet Singh asked for a conditional discharge or a fine or the basis that “there was fraudulent misrepresentation in this case”, as the minor “colluded” with the pimp to hide her real age. He added that the minor was neither coerced into having sex, nor was she a victim of human trafficking.

Shaw is the second of the 51 men to be dealt with in the online vice ring crackdown after the former principal of Pei Chun Public School, Lee Lip Hong, who was sentenced to nine weeks’ jail for a similar offence with the same underage girl.

Shaw has decided to appeal, and his police bail of $10,000 was extended to court bail of the same amount.

Speaking to queries from the media, Mr Baey, who was the President of the Singapore Volleyball Association said:

“Though he (Lee) spent only a short period of time in the Association, he had made tremendous contributions to it.”

When NUS PRC scholar Sun Xu called Singaporeans ‘dogs’ two months ago, Mr Baey immediately asked Singaporeans to ‘reflect’ on their own behavior, sparking a massive outcry which he later apologized for in Parliament.

The former principal of Pei Chun Public School Lee Lip Hong broke down and cried in court today as the judge sentenced him to nine weeks imprisonment for having commercial sex with his minor. When the jail sentence was handed down at about noon, Lee was seen wiping tears from his eyes.

His lawyer Melanie Ho has pleaded for leniency saying that Lee did not suspect anything was wrong and had no reason to doubt the age of the underage prostitute, based on her physical appearance, demeanour and maturity.

Ms Ho said her client was very remorseful and understood that he had made a very serious mistake.

Lee later requested to plead personally, telling the judge that even though he changed his mind and decided to engage a counsel, he never changed his decision to plead guilty.

He added he was fully ashamed of his actions, which have caused pain and harm to his family, especially his wife and many others who entrusted him to be their role model.

“I would like to confess that I am fully ashamed of my own actions, and more importantly the pain and harm that I have caused to my family members, especially my wife. My wife has magnanimously taken a tough decision to forgive me, and even proposed to reaffirm our wedding vows once again.”

In mitigation, Lee admitted his mistake was caused by his ‘weak resistance’ to ‘distractions’ and his personal lack of control of his own moral standards.

Besides Lee Lip Hong, another former teacher and prominent grassroots leader in Jurong Chua Ren Cheng was also charged for having sex with the same underage prostitutes.

The former principal of Pei Chun Public School Lee Lip Hong (pic left with PAP MP Josephine Teo) has been sentenced to nine weeks’ jail for having paid sex with a minor, a sign of what is in store for the other 47 men who have been charged for the same offence.

Lee was charged for paying $500 twice to have sex with the prostitute ‘Miss XXX’ who was 17 years old at the time of the offence twice on 26 September and 10 December in 2010. He pleaded guilty on Friday morning.

The court heard that Lee first came to know of the girl’s services from an online porn site ‘theviemodels.com’ ran by pimp Tang Boon Thiew who had sex with the same girl earlier for only $50.

She was described as having the following attributes on the site:

“1.60m tall, slim figure, C-cup breasts…(She) still has that naive girlishness, offers excellent sweet young thing, girlfriend experience….Advance booking for (her) is required, don’t leave it to least minute booking as it always almost won’t work!”

Unable to resist the temptation, Lee procured her services through the website which stated the girl’s age as 18 years old.

In mitigation, Lee’s lawyer Melanie Ho told the court that her client was misled about the girl’s real age and when he met the girl’s pimp, Tang Boon Thiew, he was told that the girl was 19 years old.

Ms Ho said Lee had no reason to suspect that she was younger than her stated age on the website. She said when Lee met the girl, she told him she was 19 years old.

Despite obviously being deceived into the ‘deal’, Lee was convicted and sentenced to imprisonment, bringing an end to his otherwise illustrious teaching career.

Meanwhile, the girl can now continue to prostitute herself legally as she is now 19 years of age . A gag order has been imposed on exposing her identity and as such her future clients will never realize they are having sex with the girl who caused the downfall of 48 men and possibly many more to come.

The underage prostitute will be called upon to testify in court soon against her ex-clients, the majority of whom have chosen to claim trial.

Up to 48 men have been charged this week for having commercial sex with her when she was 17 years old. They include 9 civil servants, a senior banker, a company director, a senior vice-president of a private company, lawyers, a senior police officer, the former principal of Pei Chun Public School Lee Lip Hong and prominent grassroots leader and high-ranking MOE official Chua Ren Cheng. Their ages range from between 21 to 48 years old.

Only two of them have pleaded guilty to the charges so far – former teachers Lee Lip Hong and Chua Ren Cheng. The third batch of men expected to be charged next week include finance professionals, lawyers and a high-ranking SAF officer.

According to a lawyer who spoke to the media, as a witness for the prosecution, the underage prostitute is expected to be questioned in detail by the defence lawyers which include prominent criminal lawyer Subhas Anandan.

Mr Anandan has earlier condemned her as a ‘hardcore prostitute’ who deserves no protection by the law. The prosecution has obtained a gag order from the Court to prevent the media and members of the public from publishing any information which may expose the identity of the girl.

Under Section 376B (1) of the Penal Code, it is against the law to have commercial sex with a person below 18 years of age which includes oral sex.

Besides the former principal of Pei Chun Public School Lee Lip Hong, a former teacher and Head of Department in Jurong Junior College Chua Ren Cheng was charged in court on Wednesday for having commercial sex with the same underage prostitute!

Said to be a popular teacher among students and a fast rising star in the education sector, Chua tendered his resignation abruptly in January this year, much to the surprise of fellow colleagues. He studied his ‘A’ levels at Hwa Chong Junior College before pursuing a   Masters in Radiation Physics with Medical Applications at University College, London.

Chua was also a grassroots leader and the former Chairman of Taman Jurong Youth Executive Committee (YEC). His profile on the website of the People’s Association has since been removed:

According to media reports, Chua reportedly hanged out frequently with Lee and another unnamed teacher and the three of them used to patronize prostitutes together. It is not known if Chua is a PAP member as well.

Lee Lip Hong was among the first batch of 44 men charged on Monday for having sex with a minor. He has pleaded guilty and told the media that he is willing to be punished for his mistake.

Other men  include 9 civil servants, a senior banker, a company director, a senior vice-president of a private company, lawyers, a senior police officer, as well as the former principal of Pei Chun Public School Lee Lip Hong. Their ages range from between 21 to 48 years old.

The pimp and mastermind behind the online vice syndicate, 39 year old Tang Boon Thiew has been charged last year.

Education Minister Heng Swee Kiat has earlier said it is important not to let “one or two incidents” tarnish the image of the teaching profession, because there are many good teachers around.

He added that there would be a couple of black sheep from time to time in spite of efforts to maintain professional standards.

Four more men were charged in court on Wednesday for having commercial sex with a minor from an online vice syndicate, one of them being Howard Shaw, the former executive director of the Singapore Environment Council and a grandson of the founder of Shaw Organization Runme Shaw.

Together with his brother Run Run Shaw, Runme Shaw founded the South Seas Film studio in 1930, which later became Shaw Studios. In 1967, he launched TVB (Television Broadcasts Ltd.) in Hong Kong, growing it into a multi-billion dollar TV empire ranking today as one of the top 5 television producers in the world.

Howard Shaw reportedly had sex with the same underage prostitute who got 44 other men charged on Monday. Some of the men include 9 civil servants, a senior banker, a company director, a senior vice-president of a private company, lawyers, a senior police officer, as well as the former principal of Pei Chun Public School Lee Lip Hong. Their ages range from between 21 to 48 years old.

Besides Howard Shaw, the other men charged today are Swiss national Juerg Buergin, 40; Chua Ren Cheng, 31; and Edward Whistler Goh Ngian Meng, 49. The mastermind behind the online vice ring 39 year old businessman Tang Boon Thiew has been charged last year.

Goh and Buergin face two charges each. Prosecutors today also applied to the court for non-disclosure of any particulars that could lead to the identification of the girl allegedly involved after Mr Subhas Anandan, who acts for 10 of the 48 accused men, had challenged on Monday that the charges for his clients were flawed because they did not contain any details of the girl allegedly involved.

In an interview with the media, Mr Subhas Anandan reportedly said:

“How is anybody going to know what he is charged for when you don’t know who the girl is, and what her age is? Who are they trying to protect? As far as I am concerned, this girl does not deserve protection as she is a HARDCORE PROSTITUTE who got so many men into trouble”

The girl was 17 years old and studying at a local polytechnic when the offences were committed. She allegedly had sex with more than 80 men and once had marathon sex with four different men in a single day.

The teenage prostitute who allegedly had sex with more than 80 men once had a MARATHON session with four different men within four hours which net her $2,000 in a single day! She rested only 13 minutes in between the session.

The shocking revelation was made in court on Monday based on a ‘sex diary‘ kept by the prostitute who kept meticulous records of all the sessions she had with her clients, including their particulars, time and place.

Some of the men who had sex with her include 9 civil servants, a senior banker, a company director, a senior vice-president of a private company, lawyers, a senior police officer, as well as the former principal of Pei Chun Public School Lee Lip Hong. Their ages range from between 21 to 48 years old.

On 10 October, 2010 she had sex with four men at the following time and place:

Sng Kok Wee: Hotel 81 at 2pm.

Ng Guan Mean: M Hotel at 2.30pm.

Fong Kok Liang (41 years old): Hotel 81 at 3pm.

Foo Kim Meng (45 years old): Hotel 81 at 4pm.

Many of the men are her ‘regular’ clients. Lee Lip Hong, the former school principal of Pei Chun Public School had sex with her TWICE on 26 September and 14 December in 2010 while another man Foo Kim Meng had sex with her FOUR TIMES between October 2010 and January 2011.

The 17 year old student was studying in a local polytechnic when she started providing sex services to men, charging a premium rate of $500 per session. Her pimp 39 year old businessman Tang Boon Thiew who ‘tried’ her before would take a commission for each client she got through his online porn site.

She was described as having the following attributes on the site:

“1.60m tall, slim figure, C-cup breasts…(She) still has that naive girlishness, offers excellent sweet young thing, girlfriend experience….Advance booking for (her) is required, don’t leave it to least minute booking as it always almost won’t work!”

Besides vaginal sex, she reportedly also offered other services such as “BBBJ, AJ, AR, CIM” which explained her higher rates than other girls in Tang’s stable.

The girl cannot be named as she is still a ‘minor’ despite having more ‘extensive’ sex experiences than other women. Her income, which is likely to exceed $100,000 a year is also not taxable.

According to court documents, Lee pad $500 to have sex with the underage prostitute twice on 26 September and 10 December in 2010.

He was charged on Monday for having sex with a minor. Unrepresented by any lawyer, he said he intends to plead guilty which could see him spending some time in jail.

In an interview with Lianhe Zaobao, a former principal of Pei Chun Public School for more than thirty years Mr Chen Jingyuan expressed his disappointment at Lee:

“We educators want to see the next generation having higher standards of morality which is more important than anything else. Results are secondary. It’s regretful to see such an incident happening in the education sector.”

Besides Lee, other men charged include 9 civil servants, MINDEF officers, a senior banker, a company director, a senior vice-president of a private company, lawyers, a senior police officer as well as a scholarship recipient.

44 men were charged on Monday for having sex with an underage prostitute who was seventeen years old at the time of the offence. One of them is the former principal of Pei Chun Public School Lee Lip Hong.

Ten of them reportedly engage the services of prominent criminal lawyer Subhas Anandan to defend them.

The mastermind of the online vice syndicate is a 39 year old businessman Tang Boon Thiew who has already been charged last year.

During the court session, lawyer Subhas Anandan took issue with the charge sheets.

“How is anybody going to know what he is charged for when you don’t know who the girl is, and what her age is? Who are they trying to protect? As far as I am concerned, this girl does not deserve protection as she is a HARDCORE PROSTITUTE who got so many men into trouble”

Mr Subhas said he would take the case all the way up to the High Court if the prosecution refuse to give him the particulars of the girl:

“We just can’t accept the word of the prosecution… We are going to ask the prosecution, the DPP, to give us further particulars. If they do not give us the further particulars, we will take it up in the High Court,” he said.

In an interview with the media, Mr Subhas described the girl as a HARDCORE prostitute who deserves no protection from the law. His comments were first aired on Channel 8 evening news yesterday, but was censored in subsequent news broadcasts.

According to unverified information circulating on the internet, the girl studied in a secondary school in Choa Chu Kang after which she enrolled in a local polytechnic in the western part of Singapore.

She was described as 1.60m tall, slim and having C-cup breasts on the online vice site where the men procured her services from. She charged $500 per session. As she is a minor, her name cannot be revealed.
