NUS terminates scholarship of sex blogger Alvin Tan, but refuses to expel him

The National University of Singapore (NUS) has terminated the scholarship of controversial law undergraduate-sex blogger Alvin Tan who sparked an outcry in Singapore and Malaysia lately by posting sex videos and photos of him and his girlfriend online, but stop short of expelling him.

Alvin Tan has to pay the full school fees as a foreign student to complete his final year of study. However, he is not required to ‘refund’ NUS for the first three years of his course which is COMPLETELY sponsored by Singapore taxpayers under the ASEAN scholarship.

In contrast, Singaporean scholars who had their scholarships terminated had to pay the full amount back.

NUS’s unprecedented decision to keep the Tan’s punishment ‘confidential’ whipped up a storm in cyberspace with PAP backbenchers Lim Biow Chuan and Intan Azura Mokhtar calling on the university to make public its disciplinary actions taken against him.

Education Minister Heng Swee Keat had earlier slammed Tan’s behavior as “reprehensible and unbecoming of a scholar”

When contacted by the state media, an NUS spokesperson said “the University is not at liberty to provide details of the specific disciplinary actions taken” and that “it is also not the practice of NUS to make public the details of internal disciplinary proceedings”.

According to unverified reports, Alvin Tan came from a well to do family in Malaysia. He had studied ten years for FREE in Singapore, thanks to the generosity of the Singapore government.
