Ma Chi’s family rubbished rumors that he is a son of Ma Kai, a high-ranking PRC official

Posted by temasektimes on May 19, 2012

The family of the late Ma Chi (马驰) has rubbished ongoing rumors in cyberspace that he is a son of Ma Kai (马凯), a high ranking communist official in the Chinese Central government.

The claim was first made by PRC journalist Cao Guoxing (曹国星) who posted photos of Ma Kai’s wife and Ma Chi’s mother on his Weibo showing uncanny similarities in physical features between the two. His post was deleted five minutes later, but not after it was circulated elsewhere.

However, the rumor was dismissed by Ma’s family as mere ‘fabrications’ when contacted by the media. They insist that Ma was born to a ‘humble’ family in Luzhou, Sichuan province and became wealthy by investing his own money.

Ma Chi reportedly has a net-worth of a few million dollars. He owned a three-million dollars penthouse in East Coast and a S$1.4 million dollar limited edition Ferrari GTO599 before it crashed.

Despite the clarification, the rumors continue to spread like wildfire in China with many PRC netizens speculating that he had accumulated his wealth via ‘extraordinary’ means.

Meanwhile, the PRC censors have kicked in with Ma Chi’s Weibo and Sina accounts deleted mysteriously yesterday and no visible traces of his background could be found on the Chinese search engines like Baidu.com.

Cabby’s daughter Stephanie Cheng cried ‘Papa Papa!’ for five minutes as his body was sent for cremation

Posted by temasektimes on May 17, 2012

Stephanie Cheng (pic left) had wanted to buy a cake to celebrate her Father’s birthday two weeks ago, but he asked her not to waste the money to do so and it turned out she will never have the chance to buy another cake for him again.

52 year old Singaporean cabby Cheng Teck Hock passed away on Sunday evening after his Hyundai Sonata taxi was rammed into by a speeding red Ferrari driven by a PRC man Ma Chi which appeared out of nowhere.

He leaves behind three children aged between 16 and 21 years old. His eldest daughter Stephanie just graduated from a local polytechnic and has put her plans to study in university on hold as a result of the family tragedy.

As his cold, motionless body was transferred from his wake at the family home in Sembawang to Mandai Crematorium to be cremated this afternoon, Stephanie was in a state of distraught, crying for his father for some five minutes during the journey:

“Papa! Papa! Papa!”

Her younger brother knelt down by the roadside and shouted a few times:

“Papa! Cross the ‘bridge’ carefully!!”

It is a Taoist belief that all souls will have to cross a bridge before meeting the King of Hades to be judged after death.

Meanwhile, the family of Ma Chi still has not offered any apology or compensation to Mr Cheng’s family as the state media continues to spin fairy tales one after another to glorify their wealth to downplay his reckless and criminal acts which have cost two innocent lives.

PRC students attend cabby Cheng Teck Hock’s wake to offer condolences and support

Posted by temasektimes on May 16, 2012

Since the beginning of the week, we have received several emails from members of the public offering financial assistance to the family of the late Cheng Teck Hock, including PRC students who are currently studying in Singapore.

Mr Cheng was driving his Hyundai Sonata taxi across a junction between Rochor Road and Victoria Street in the early hours of Saturday afternoon before a red Ferrari driven by a PRC national Ma Chi beat the red light and crashed into him.

Ma Chi died on the spot and the Japanese passenger Shigemi Ito in Mr Cheng’s taxi passed away hours later in hospital.

Mr Cheng was declared brain dead by doctors and finally succumbed to his injuries on Sunday evening leaving behind three children aged between 16 and 21. His eldest daughter has to put a halt  to her plans to further her studies in universities

One PRC student Zhang Jingshu attended the wake of Mr Cheng last night:

“Today I visited the funeral of the late cabby Mr Cheng and felt sorry and sad for him. All the Weibo users, residing in Singapore or in China, are condemning or even cursing Ma Chi.”

Another PRC student from NUS Heng Bin attended the wake with a group of friends and donated some $500 to the family.

“I feel very sorry for the family. In China, he (Ma Chi) would be cruxified by the public and his family will have to attend the funeral of the victims and bow to them.”

PRC nationals are also appalled at the coverage of the accident by local media. One staff nurse Li Bei wrote in an email to us:

“In Guangzhou, the family would be on ‘Guangzhou Focus’ (current affairs talkshow) and publicly shamed. I am shocked your media is actually praising how rich and successful he is. We spit on such people in China.”

Some other responses from PRC nationals in Singapore on Lion City Forum:

“悲剧!一场车祸毁了几个家庭,为了自己和家人我们应惜福,对自己所做所为负责。最痛苦的是他们的亲人。” – desnow

“有钱人好练。害死无辜的几条人命,新加坡的马路就算晚上开车也是按交通灯走的,因为新加坡人就是这么呆板。无辜的德士司机死都放不下。家属在跟他讲这不是他的错,他才含泪而去。更可悲的事,肇事者家属,自顾自办后事,连个电话安慰都没有。无情无义。丢脸啊。” – cbj

“实际上事故的责任不会因为肇事者死亡而自动消失。两辆车的死者都是家里的经济支柱。善后如何得到妥善的处理,的士家庭如何获得合理的赔偿,肇事者家庭会不会出现人道主义灾难,这才是大家现在应该关注的。法拉利司机是要为自己的死负责,但他母亲,妻子和腹中的孩子还是值得同情的吧。” – nvm

Family of PRC Ferrari driver Ma Chi scolds Singapore netizens: Hold back your ‘poisonous’ tongues!

Posted by temasektimes on May 15, 2012

Instead of apologizing to the victims of the fatal Bugis accident and offering them compensation, the family of the late PRC Ferrari driver Ma Chi lashed out at Singaporeans instead for not being ‘sympathetic’ towards him!

The accident was caused by an intoxicated Ma Chi who beat the red lights and rammed into a Hyundai Sonata taxi at a junction between Rochor Road and Victoria Street.

Ma Chi was pronounced dead on the spot. The Japanese female passenger in the taxi died hours later in hospital while the Singaporean cabby Cheng Teck Hock passed away on Sunday evening, leaving behind three children between the ages 16 and 21.

The shocking accident fuels rampant anti-China sentiments among Singaporeans with many venting their frustration and anger on Ma Chi online.

The insensitive comments appear to rile Ma Chi’s family who asked a friend to lodge a complaint to a local Chinese tabloid:

“The rich is not always at fault. We urge netizens to hold back their poisonous tongues.”

One cousin of Ma Chi revealed he started earning his own money when he was 18 years old and is not a son of some rich tycoon:

“I read online that many netizens said my brother deserved to die as he is an offspring of a rich man. I want to tell you, if you cannot afford a Ferrari 599GTO, there is no need to say those who can pay for it is a rich man’s son.”

The Chinese tabloid then went on to trumpet Ma Chi’s ‘accomplishments’ in life, describing him as a ‘savvy investor’ who amassed a huge amount of wealth in merely two years.

Despite the constant harping on Ma Chi’s wealth, very little is known about the financial company he worked in, the type of investments he specialized in or his track record as an investor which raised serious questions on where he made his money from.

On the other hand, since Ma Chi and his family is so rich, they should have no difficulties supporting the family of the late Cheng Teck Hock who was the sole breadwinner and yet there is nothing heard from them so far.

Perhaps the tabloid should consider asking Ma Chi’s family if they intend to apologize and compensate the victims instead of becoming a cheap spokesperson for them to whitewash his heinous act.

Hong Kong’s Apple Daily: Ferrari accident fuels rising anti-China sentiments in Singapore

Posted by temasektimes on May 15, 2012

In contrast to the Singapore media which has been busy trying to spin hogwash one after another to defend the PRC Ferrari driver Ma Chi, the Hong Kong media offers a fair, balanced and objective coverage of the accident.

Apple Daily began the news reporting by laying the blame for the accident solely and squarely on Ma Chi:

“This was an accident caused by drink-driving. He only not hurt himself and others, but caused PRC Chinese to be scolded by Singaporeans, triggering another round of anti-China sentiments in Singapore after his death.”

The article pointed out clearly why many Singaporeans are extremely peeved off by the accident:

“…..the accident caused the underlying frustrations and anger Singaporeans already had towards PRC immigrants to explode. In the eyes of Singaporeans, the PRC Chinese are arrogant and have no respect for the law……”

It also aired some anti-China comments posted by Singapore netizens instead of sweeping them under the carpet like the Singapore media:

[Source: Apple Daily]

It’s time Singaporean journalists should start learning from their Hong Kong counterparts on how to write factual reports and not just churn out pages of propaganda to brainwash Singaporeans.

Perhaps Apple Daily can consider setting up a news outlet here to produce Singapore news?

PRC nationals in Singapore condemn Ferrari driver Ma Chi even as Singapore media continues to defend him

Posted by temasektimes on May 15, 2012

The tragic accident at Bugis last Saturday morning has shocked not only Singaporeans, but PRC nationals living in Singapore as well, most of whom roundly condemned the Ferrari driver Ma Chi (pic left) for causing the accident.

A dashboard camera on another cab not involved in the accident showed clearly Ma Chi beating the red light and ramming into a Hyundai Sonata taxi which has the right of way.

Ma Chi was pronounced dead on the spot. The Japanese female passenger of the cab Shigemi Ito passed away hours later and the Singaporean cabby Cheng Teck Hock died of his injuries on Sunday evening.

In a thread started on the popular Lion City Forum, most PRC netizens were outraged by what happened.

One PRC netizen put the blame squarely on Ma Chi for causing the accident:

“The dead local cabby was the sole breadwinner of his family, (Ma Chi) caused harm to an entire family.”

Another PRC netizen even cursed Ma Chi:

“Probably had a habit of drink-driving in China…..this type of person should early.”

PRC netizen ‘HouTanZhang’ was visibly upset at his fellow countrymen bringing their ‘driving habits’ to Singapore:

“No need to say more, watch yourself. If he wants to die, there is no need to implicate so many people…..Frankly speaking, many PRC Chinese brought their nasty driving habits to Singapore from public bus to racing car….I remember when I first came to Singapore, where got so many problems?”

However, Straits Times journalist Tessa Wong apparently did not think nationality is an issue and criticized Singaporeans on her Twitter for singling out Ma Chi because he was from China:

After running out of excuses to defend Ma Chi, the state media now claimed that the accident could have been ‘worse’ and killed 8 people to imply that Singaporeans should be ‘thankful’ instead.

DJs havealso  jumped onto the ‘protect Ma Chi’ bandwagon with 93.3FM DJs insinuating that drivers of high-performance cars like Ferraris are not ‘adequately’ trained to drive them on Singapore roads to downplay Ma Chi’s role in causing the accident.

When even PRC nationals themselves are condemning Ma Chi for reckless and dangerous driving, the Singapore media is trying ways and means to cover up his mistake for him. Don’t you feel ashamed to be a Singaporean?

Clearer video of Bugis accident: Speeding Ferrari rammed into Sonata taxi like a bullet!

Posted by temasektimes on May 15, 2012

This video was taken by a dashboard camera in another Comfort taxi which was on the left of the taxi driven by Mr Cheng Teck Hock who was involved in the fatal Bugis accident on Saturday morning.

It began with a mundane conversation inside the taxi between the driver and his passengers before stopping at the junction besides Mr Cheng’s taxi.

As the traffic light turned green, Mr Cheng’s taxi was seen driving across the junction of Rochor Road and Victoria Street when a red Ferrari driven by a PRC man Ma Chi (马驰) appeared out of nowhere and rammed into its side like a bullet.

A loud ‘bang’ was heard instantaneously and fragments of both vehicles were scattered all around the place:

Judging from the speed of the Ferrari, it must be speeding at more than 140km/hour and there is no way Mr Cheng could have avoided the accident.

The cabby who took the video clip was just seconds away from being knocked into and could be heard muttering “Wah, wah, wah lucky man” seconds after the collision which happened at exactly 4:09am as shown in the recording.

Ma Chi was pronounced dead on the spot while the Japanese passenger in Mr Cheng’s cab Shigemi Ito died hours later in hospital.

Mr Cheng eventually succumbed to his injuries on Sunday evening, leaving behind his wife and three children aged between 16 and 21 years old. His eldest daughter just graduated from a local polytechnic and have to put her plans to pursue her studies in university on hold as a result of the family tragedy.

Touching last moments of cabby Cheng Teck Hock’s life as wife reassured him he was not at fault for Bugis accident

Posted by temasektimes on May 15, 2012

Singaporean cabby Cheng Teck Hock (pic left) was declared brain dead and given no more than half a day to live, but he hung on against the odds for thirty nine hours and finally passed away after he was told that he was not responsible for causing the tragic accident at Bugis.

Mr Cheng was driving his taxi in across a junction in the early hours of last Saturday morning when a speeding Ferrari driven by a PRC driver appeared out of nowhere and rammed into him.

He suffered from massive bleeding in his brain, lungs and liver and was in a coma. Seeing him struggling for his life in Tan Tock Seng Hospital, his wife Madam Lim Choo Eng spoke into his ears gently:

“We have seen the video clip of the accident. It is not your fault.”

Upon hearing those words, tears rolled down from his cheek and his eyes opened for a minute or so. The line depicting his heart rate on the monitor then went flat and Mr Cheng passed away peacefully.

Mr Cheng leaves behind his wife and three children aged between 16 and 21 years old. His eldest daughter just graduated from a local polytechnic and have to put her plans to pursue her studies in university on hold as a result of the family tragedy.

Comfort Delgro has started a donation drive for Mr Cheng’s family.
