Ma Chi’s wife posts apology on Weibo: We are sorry and we will be responsible to the victims’ families

Posted by temasektimes on May 18, 2012

The wife of the late Ma Chi (马驰) has posted an apology via a friend ‘Triston’ on Chinese microblog ‘Weibo’ this evening.

Ma Chi died in a fatal accident last Saturday morning when his speeding Ferrari beat the red light and rammed into a Hyundai Sonata taxi at a traffic junction in Bugis between Rochor Road and Victoria Street. The taxi driver Cheng Teck Hock and his passenger Shigemi Ito passed away later in hospital.

In the post written in Chinese, Mrs Ma said the family is very sorry for what happened:

“We express our deepest apologies to the families of the deceased driver and his female passenger. We will not shun our responsibility towards them and will take appropriate measures at a later date.”

[Source: weibo.com]

Mrs Ma said that while the family will not comment on the arguments going on in cyberspace about the accident, they hope everybody can understand and respect their predicament – that they have to suffer the loss of Ma Chi just when they are preparing to celebrate the coming birth of her unborn baby.

“Ma Chi has paid with his life for his reckless actions and we hope everyone will show a little bit of respect for the deceased,” she said.

She added that the family is also concerned about the female passenger in Ma Chi’s Ferrari, a 21 year old PRC girl by the name of Wu Weiwei, but they are unable to do much for her as they do not know her.

Mrs Ma ended her statement by urging everybody to drive safely and to treasure life.

The Chinese embassy in Singapore had earlier sent a representative to express its condolences at the funeral of Mr Cheng and issued a press statement reminding PRC nationals in Singapore to obey Singapore’s laws.

The public apology and offer of assistance by the Ma family to the victims’ families will go some way towards soothing the pain and anguish of all those hurt by this tragic episode.

The wife of Mr Cheng said her family does not blame anybody and she wants to let the matter rest to move on with life.

Though the accident exposes a widening gulf between Singaporeans and foreigners in Singapore judging by the massive outpouring of vitriol and anger online, it also bring together everybody in support of the victims’ families.

We applaud the remedial actions taken by the Ma family and we hope it will bring a closure to all parties concerned.

PRC journalist: Ma Chi is a son of Ma Kai, a senior communist official in China

Posted by temasektimes on May 18, 2012

The dead Ferrari driver Ma Chi (马驰) responsible for causing a fatal accident in Bugis which cost the lives of two innocent victims may be a son of a senior communist official in China which may explain the ‘preferential’ treatment dished out to him by the Singapore media.

Despite his heinous act, Ma Chi was glorified unashamedly as a ‘tall and young, rich and successful’ tycoon by the tabloids which have been harping on his immense ‘wealth’ ad nausem.

According to one PRC journalist Cao Guoxing (曹国星), Ma Chi is a son of Ma Kai (马凯), a high-ranking Chinese official.

Ma Kai holds the following positions in the PRC government:

“State Councilor and State Council Secretary-General, the President of the National School of Administration, Western Region Development of the State Council Leading Group Office.” (Source: Xinhua)

Cao initially made the stunning claim on his Chinese microblog ‘Weibo’, but the post was quickly deleted five minutes later, though not before it was circulated widely by PRC netizens elsewhere.

In the post, Cao published three photos showing uncanny similarities in physical features between Ma Kai’s wife and Ma Chi’s mother:

[Source: letscorp.net]

He also asked why Ma Chi became a ‘Sichuanese’ suddenly:

“刚知道新加坡,在老婆(四川电视台主持人)怀孕期间,载美女开法拉利游车河,闯红灯撞死三个人(包括他自己)的那小子,姓马。。叫马驰 ,他怎么成四川人了呢?”

Ma Chi came to Singapore a few years ago and had applied for Singapore PR before the accident. He reportedly made his immense wealth estimated at a few million dollars from ‘investments’. Till today, his family has yet to apologize to the victims on his behalf or offer any sort of compensation to their families.

Cabby’s daughter Stephanie Cheng cried ‘Papa Papa!’ for five minutes as his body was sent for cremation

Posted by temasektimes on May 17, 2012

Stephanie Cheng (pic left) had wanted to buy a cake to celebrate her Father’s birthday two weeks ago, but he asked her not to waste the money to do so and it turned out she will never have the chance to buy another cake for him again.

52 year old Singaporean cabby Cheng Teck Hock passed away on Sunday evening after his Hyundai Sonata taxi was rammed into by a speeding red Ferrari driven by a PRC man Ma Chi which appeared out of nowhere.

He leaves behind three children aged between 16 and 21 years old. His eldest daughter Stephanie just graduated from a local polytechnic and has put her plans to study in university on hold as a result of the family tragedy.

As his cold, motionless body was transferred from his wake at the family home in Sembawang to Mandai Crematorium to be cremated this afternoon, Stephanie was in a state of distraught, crying for his father for some five minutes during the journey:

“Papa! Papa! Papa!”

Her younger brother knelt down by the roadside and shouted a few times:

“Papa! Cross the ‘bridge’ carefully!!”

It is a Taoist belief that all souls will have to cross a bridge before meeting the King of Hades to be judged after death.

Meanwhile, the family of Ma Chi still has not offered any apology or compensation to Mr Cheng’s family as the state media continues to spin fairy tales one after another to glorify their wealth to downplay his reckless and criminal acts which have cost two innocent lives.

Passenger in Ma Chi’s Ferrari Wu Weiwei (吴薇薇) was sexily dressed in shorts that night

Posted by temasektimes on May 17, 2012

The mysterious female passenger in Ma Chi’s Ferrari Ms Wu Weiwei was reportedly sexily dressed on the fateful night when he crashed into a Hyundai Sonata taxi, killing himself and two others.

21 year old Wu Weiwei (吴薇薇) hails from the city of Wuhan (武汉), the provincial capital of Hubei province in central China. She just graduated from the East Institute of Management with a degree in ‘hospitality’.

According to media reports, she was dressed only in shorts and a low-cut blouse exposing her bra when she was sent to hospital. Ms Wu suffered a fracture in a right leg and is currently recuperating in Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Her condition is stable.

Though Ms Wu’s friends claimed that she comes from a ‘reputable’ family in China, a Chinese tabloid reported her as working in a KTV lounge. It is not known how she got to know Ma Chi as none of his relatives and friends know her.

Meanwhile, netizens are having a field day speculating on what she might be doing with Ma Chi in his Ferrari moments before the accident.

“The hostess must be blowing something that cause ma chi to be over excited and accelerate n tat cause the accident. “ – Janice Lau

“It is funny what type of crap excuse they can come out with…a girl who goes to nightclub to celebrate or something….lol….come out with something better…..and I have a question, why is she a survivor in an accident that left 3 out of 4 dead? Special position that reduce the force of the impact?” – 關偉宏

“Just experiencing Ferrari extra “Gear+ balls”, the more I squeeze it, the more your hubby drives like in the Fast “N” Furious movie. LOL!!” – Andy

Ex-Singapore idol finalist Norman Then LAUGHS after watching Bugis accident video: Crash and burn…Hahaha

Posted by temasektimes on May 16, 2012

While most Singaporeans are shocked and outraged by the video clip of the Bugis accident last Saturday morning, which saw one speeding Ferrari ramming into a Hyundai Sonata taxi killing himself and two other victims, one Singaporean guy is having a great time laughing at it.

Ex-Singapore Idol finalist Norman Then, a graduate of Ngee Polytechnic and currently working at ‘Ice Cold Beer’ posted a sadistic comment on his Facebook last night:

“When I watching the video of the PRC guy smashing into the taxi. My first instinct was…. To LAUGH. People in the car didn’t think it was funny though. Perhaps next time I’ll try another reaction…….. Singing perhaps….”crash and burn” savage garden. Hahahahaha.”

[Source: Norman Then’s Facebook]

Norman remained unfazed by the feedback given by his friends who were disgusted by his comment and wrote in his next post that ‘life is a joke’ to him:

Norman Then was the top 12 finalist for Season 2 of Singapore Idol:

It is not a joke that two innocent man and woman had died from the accident, one of whom was the sole breadwinner of the family and the daughter now has to put her plans to further her studies in the university as a result.

Is it too much to show a bit of sympathy and compassion towards a fellow Singaporean? We urge Norman Then to apologize publicly for his insensitive remarks on Facebook.

Passenger in Ma Chi’s Ferrari is a PRC student Wu Weiwei who just graduated from a private school

Posted by temasektimes on May 16, 2012

The mysterious female passenger in PRC man Ma Chi’s Ferrari has been identified as a PRC woman Ms Wu Weiwei from Hubei province.

Ma Chi crashed his red Ferrari into a Comfort Delgro taxi driven by Singaporean cabby Cheng Teck Hock in the early hours of Saturday morning at a Bugis junction between Rochor Road and Victoria Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Mr Cheng, 52, and his Japanese passenger, Ms Shigemi Ito, later died in hospital.

Ms Wu suffered a fractured leg in the accident and underwent an operation on Monday. Her condition is currently stable and is recovering in a high-dependency ward at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

It is unclear how Ms Wu ended up in Ma Chi’s car in the middle of the night. None of friends nor his wife (pic left) know the existence of Ms Wu whose friends said she had just graduated from a hospitality course at the East Asia Institute of Management.

They also refute reports by a local Chinese tabloid that she is working at a KTV lounge at a hostess, claiming that she comes from a ‘reputable’ family in China.

When asked about Ma Chi, they said they have seen him before with Ms Wu, but declined to comment on their ‘relationship’, adding that she already has a boyfriend.

PRC students attend cabby Cheng Teck Hock’s wake to offer condolences and support

Posted by temasektimes on May 16, 2012

Since the beginning of the week, we have received several emails from members of the public offering financial assistance to the family of the late Cheng Teck Hock, including PRC students who are currently studying in Singapore.

Mr Cheng was driving his Hyundai Sonata taxi across a junction between Rochor Road and Victoria Street in the early hours of Saturday afternoon before a red Ferrari driven by a PRC national Ma Chi beat the red light and crashed into him.

Ma Chi died on the spot and the Japanese passenger Shigemi Ito in Mr Cheng’s taxi passed away hours later in hospital.

Mr Cheng was declared brain dead by doctors and finally succumbed to his injuries on Sunday evening leaving behind three children aged between 16 and 21. His eldest daughter has to put a halt  to her plans to further her studies in universities

One PRC student Zhang Jingshu attended the wake of Mr Cheng last night:

“Today I visited the funeral of the late cabby Mr Cheng and felt sorry and sad for him. All the Weibo users, residing in Singapore or in China, are condemning or even cursing Ma Chi.”

Another PRC student from NUS Heng Bin attended the wake with a group of friends and donated some $500 to the family.

“I feel very sorry for the family. In China, he (Ma Chi) would be cruxified by the public and his family will have to attend the funeral of the victims and bow to them.”

PRC nationals are also appalled at the coverage of the accident by local media. One staff nurse Li Bei wrote in an email to us:

“In Guangzhou, the family would be on ‘Guangzhou Focus’ (current affairs talkshow) and publicly shamed. I am shocked your media is actually praising how rich and successful he is. We spit on such people in China.”

Some other responses from PRC nationals in Singapore on Lion City Forum:

“悲剧!一场车祸毁了几个家庭,为了自己和家人我们应惜福,对自己所做所为负责。最痛苦的是他们的亲人。” – desnow

“有钱人好练。害死无辜的几条人命,新加坡的马路就算晚上开车也是按交通灯走的,因为新加坡人就是这么呆板。无辜的德士司机死都放不下。家属在跟他讲这不是他的错,他才含泪而去。更可悲的事,肇事者家属,自顾自办后事,连个电话安慰都没有。无情无义。丢脸啊。” – cbj

“实际上事故的责任不会因为肇事者死亡而自动消失。两辆车的死者都是家里的经济支柱。善后如何得到妥善的处理,的士家庭如何获得合理的赔偿,肇事者家庭会不会出现人道主义灾难,这才是大家现在应该关注的。法拉利司机是要为自己的死负责,但他母亲,妻子和腹中的孩子还是值得同情的吧。” – nvm

Comfort Delgro has started a donation drive for Mr Cheng’s family.

Members of the public can make cheques payable to “LIM CHOO ENG” and mail them to:

THE CHENG FAMILY
c/o Comfort Transportation Pte Ltd

Donors should indicate their names on the back of their cheques.

We are in contact with one member of the Cheng family. Singaporean employers who wish to offer a job to the eldest daughter of Mr Cheng can email us at temasektimes@yahoo.com. Thanks!

Ma Chi’s Ferrari estimated to be speeding at more than 180 kilometers per hour

Posted by temasektimes on May 16, 2012

The video clip showing Ma Chi’s red Ferrari speeding across a junction in Bugis and ramming into a Hyundai Sonata had gone viral in cyberspace, leading many netizens to speculate on its likely speed.

One netizen Brian Tan did a simple calculation and estimate the speed to be more than 180km/h:

“I did a simple calculation by breaking the video down to 30 frames per sec and measured via google map the distance from the pedestrian crossing white line to the position of the taxi and the following is the result:

11 frames for Ferrari to travel from white line to taxi = 0.367sec
Distance traveled estimated to be 18.9857m
The Ferrari was travelling at a minimum of 186.2359km/h

The taxi which was driven by Singaporean cabby Cheng Teck Hong had the right of way and was traveling across the junction between Rochor Road and Victoria Street before the Ferrari appeared out of nowhere and rammed into its left side.

The Singapore traffic police is still conducting its own investigation into the accident. A key witness of the accident is the mysterious PRC lady in Ma Chi’s Ferrari whose condition is stable and is currently recuperating in Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Family of PRC Ferrari driver Ma Chi scolds Singapore netizens: Hold back your ‘poisonous’ tongues!

Posted by temasektimes on May 15, 2012

Instead of apologizing to the victims of the fatal Bugis accident and offering them compensation, the family of the late PRC Ferrari driver Ma Chi lashed out at Singaporeans instead for not being ‘sympathetic’ towards him!

The accident was caused by an intoxicated Ma Chi who beat the red lights and rammed into a Hyundai Sonata taxi at a junction between Rochor Road and Victoria Street.

Ma Chi was pronounced dead on the spot. The Japanese female passenger in the taxi died hours later in hospital while the Singaporean cabby Cheng Teck Hock passed away on Sunday evening, leaving behind three children between the ages 16 and 21.

The shocking accident fuels rampant anti-China sentiments among Singaporeans with many venting their frustration and anger on Ma Chi online.

The insensitive comments appear to rile Ma Chi’s family who asked a friend to lodge a complaint to a local Chinese tabloid:

“The rich is not always at fault. We urge netizens to hold back their poisonous tongues.”

One cousin of Ma Chi revealed he started earning his own money when he was 18 years old and is not a son of some rich tycoon:

“I read online that many netizens said my brother deserved to die as he is an offspring of a rich man. I want to tell you, if you cannot afford a Ferrari 599GTO, there is no need to say those who can pay for it is a rich man’s son.”

The Chinese tabloid then went on to trumpet Ma Chi’s ‘accomplishments’ in life, describing him as a ‘savvy investor’ who amassed a huge amount of wealth in merely two years.

Despite the constant harping on Ma Chi’s wealth, very little is known about the financial company he worked in, the type of investments he specialized in or his track record as an investor which raised serious questions on where he made his money from.

On the other hand, since Ma Chi and his family is so rich, they should have no difficulties supporting the family of the late Cheng Teck Hock who was the sole breadwinner and yet there is nothing heard from them so far.

Perhaps the tabloid should consider asking Ma Chi’s family if they intend to apologize and compensate the victims instead of becoming a cheap spokesperson for them to whitewash his heinous act.

Cocky PRC new citizen said ‘serve taxi driver right’ and asked why his taxi was not fitted with an airbag

Posted by temasektimes on May 15, 2012

Despite being banned by Hardwarezone forum time and again, PRC new citizen ‘Martin’ aka ‘Jennet’ continues to incur the wrath of forumers by blaming deceased Singaporean driver Cheng Teck Hock for causing the fatal Bugis accident!

Mr Cheng was driving his taxi across a junction between Rochor Road and Victoria Street when a red Ferrari driven by PRC driver Ma Chi sped across and rammed into its side. Ma died on the spot while Mr Cheng passed away from his injuries a day later.

A video clip of the accident showed clearly that Mr Cheng had the right of way as the green light was flashing, but Martin insists that the accident could have been prevented if Mr Cheng was more ‘aware’ of his surroundings, adding that he ‘deserved’ it:

“Why didn’t the taxi driver look at oncoming vehicles before accelerating off? They think green light = no threat? Serve the taxi driver right!”

[Source: Hardwarezone forum]

He added in a sarcastic tone:

“I blame the taxi driver for his negligence. You know Ferrari is a fast car, cannot hear the voorm voorm? Sleeping?”

After Martin was banned from posting on Hardwarezone, he posted on his Facebook insinuating that Mr Cheng died because his taxi was not installed with airbags:

“Heard that sonata taxi’s are not installed with airbags due to cost cutting measure!”

According to Hardwarezone forumers who have met him, Martin came to Singapore a few years ago together with his parents and has obtained Singapore citizenship. It is not known if he has served National Service.

He is reportedly in his early 20s and run a chain of food stalls in Republic Polytechnic, Hwa Chong Junior College and National University of Singapore. His father is a rich businessman and has given money to him to run his food business.

Besides ‘Martin’, many PRC netizens have also jumped to the defence of Ma Chi and trivialized the accident.

‘tao1224’ posted on Lion City Forum:

“Smear PRC Chinese again because of another accident? What if the passenger is an old lady? Should we say the driver respect the elderly and sent her home late at night?”

(一场车祸又是给中国人抹黑?????????要是载的是个老太太呢!是不是说车主敬老爱幼,深夜还送老太太回家!然后标题:中国男子值得表扬~)

‘oliver871’ opined Singaporeans are making a big fuss:

“As there are more PRC Chinese in Singapore now, more are driving cars and buses and naturally the chances of getting into an accident is higher. If we want to harp on every accident which happens, then PRC Chinese need not drive vehicles in Singapore anymore and our bus drivers can all retire back to China.”

(现在国人在新加坡多了,开车的也多了,尤其还有巴士司机,出车祸的概率也大了。如果出了一个事情就放大看,那么国人就不用在新加坡开车了,巴士司机全退回中国。)

Due to Singapore’s pro-China immigration policies, large number of PRC Chinese have flocked to Singapore to live, work and study in recent years.

In an interview with National Geographic magazine in 2009, then Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew quipped that it is a good thing that Singapore is welcoming so many Chinese immigrants as they are ‘harder-driving’ and ‘harder-striving’ than Singaporeans.
