A severed limb was spotted lying on the road along the Pan Island Expressway after a horrific accident yesterday evening involving a motorcyclist and a bus.

According to a Hardwarezone forumer ‘kediraksith’, the bus driver is a mainland Chinese:
“My friend just told me its his friend who is the victim, currently in ICU still not conscious … The bus driver who knocked him down… IS A ****ING TIONG DRIVER AGAIN!!!!”
For some strange reason, the accident was not reported in the mainstream media.

May the victim get out of his ordeal soon. Stop bashing the foreigners. If Singaporeans were willing to take on the job of a bus driver, do you think the bus companies need to employ foreigners? We do not have the facts of this accident but as a driver everyday on Singapore roads, accidents involving motorcyclists are so common these days. It’s shocking. That they think that they zip in and zip out of lanes, as if the cars are all in constant speed. And they would ride in the middle of a lane and hold up other vehicles too.

The trouble is that the employers prefer PRC because of lower pay. Driver is not fair in blaming all motor cyclist. I have been riding 53 years and not one single accident. Horn them if they are holding up traffic.

I agree partly. Singaporeans should not be too picky with jobs. But is it fair that the management draws so much money while the drivers’ pay is stagnant for many many years? They are good in transferring all the cost to consumers and not willing to receive lesser profit. In this bad times, is it fair for them to keep getting so much profit?

sorry to tell you this, but it is the true, i took this cab from my home to ICA. i chatted all the way. i was told by this cab driver that his friend did send in application to smrt to drive bus but his application was rejected by smrt! bty his friend got class 2 class 3 class 4 driving Licenses and was rejected by smrt. so tell smrt don’t bull shit. there is a few case i heard during taking cab and from my friend. true encounter!

He saw the advertisment again and he apply again and still no reply. He was 45 years old. He has no choice but to go for taxi course and now he is driving taxi.

My uncle is a Singaporean SMRT bus driver. Why not? Of course not, if the pay is stagnant! A lot of other jobs are the same! Stagnant pay, why? Cos after privatization, the objective is no longer to maximize consumers’ welfare, but more importantly to maximize shareholders’ profits! I’ve been traveling to China quite frequently, and I’d noticed the way the mainland drivers drive are machiam like no rule lidat. Double white line can anyhow cut, their honks like no need money lidat, reckless overtaking is like a norm, and people cross the road no need look out for cars, just cross blindly and somehow many manage to survive the notorious traffic condition. Hell, I would NEVER dare to drive in China (though I consider my driving skill relatively good)…. The point is, they come to Singapore, they should adopt our rule of the game and to prevent so, 2 ways: 1) reduce in take and 2) go through the painstaking process of resitting for the TP test. Allowing foreigners to convert their existing licence is simply fair, because of 2 reasons: 1) their existing licence could be obtained out of bribery 2) even if they really passed their homeland’s driving test, the standard could be very different, and the kind of traffic condition they’re accustomed to is very different too.

They rather take in cheap labour and continue to make profits at our expense. These drivers are not only rash by nature, they are also not well trained enough before being put on our roads. Increase the bus driver salary to $2,500 per month and you will see many taxi drivers convert to buses. They drive in comfort, have periods of rest and get medical care, CPF and other benefits. Also then increase the bus fares by 50%. Singaporeans better not complain then.

@ Driver; it is not a question of blaming, but fact remains that the ah-tiongs’ bad habits is an ingrained phenomemon in their driving culture. we say stop them from driving until they take all the necessary conversion tests, both practical and theory, and be subject to similarly stringent examinations by our traffic police before they be allowed to drive.

I think the FTs just need to take a conversion theory test if I am not wrong. I spent almost $3,000 to get my licence here 18 years ago after 4 attempts not to mention the many tedious hours of practical and theory lessons.

Conversion of Foreign Driving Licence
General Guidelines
Any person holding a licence to drive a particular class of motor vehicle by the competent authority of a country other than Singapore, may apply for conversion to a Singapore driving licence to drive the equivalent class of motor vehicle. Licence that is granted automatically without the need of test but on the merit of attaining of another licence will not be converted, example a motorcycle licence granted with class 3 licence without going through a test is practised in countries like Myanmar and France.

Singaporeans and Permanent Residents
Singaporeans and Permanent Residents may only drive in Singapore with a Singapore licence. They have to seek conversion of their foreign driving licence upon returning to Singapore and upon obtaining PR status respectively.
Singaporeans and Permanent Residents may convert a foreign driving licence if they can show proof that they have reason to be staying in a foreign country for a period of 1 year or more due to study or work, and have a total stay of 6 months within the one year period.
New PRs who already have a 5-year Singapore driving licence will have to replace it with a lifetime driving licence that reflects their new NRIC number. Replacement of licence can be done at a fee of $25 at the Traffic Police Department at 10 Ubi Ave 3 S’pore 408865.

Foreigners
A foreigner above 18 years of age and holding a Work Pass/Dependent Pass/Student Pass may drive in Singapore with a valid class 3, 3A or 2B foreign licence, for a period of not more than 12 months. A Singapore driving licence is required after 12 months. Those on short term social visit may drive with their foreign licence for up to 12 months each time they enter into Singapore. For licence not written in English language, an International Driving Permit or an official translation in English language is required.
Please note that Work Permit holder is not allowed to drive in the course of work on public roads unless the occupation stated in the Work Permit shows he is employed as a driver.

Classes of driving licence that may be converted
Foreign licence conversion is only granted for class 2B and class 3 qualified driving licences. Learner driving licence may not be converted.
Those who wish to obtain a class 4 and/or class 5 licence need to go through training and a prescribed practical test before they can obtain the Singapore class 4 or 5 licence. No direct conversion is granted for these heavy vehicle licences.
Conversion for a higher capacity or open category motorcycle licence is normally not granted unless there are documentary proof of training, testing, ownership of bigger motorcycle and insurance policy indicating that you have gone through proper training and testing regime and have had at least one year riding experience on the road.

Conversion procedure
In order to convert your foreign licence to a Singapore driving licence, you are required to pass the Basic Theory Test (BTT), overseas theory test results are not admissible for consideration.
You may book for a BTT in person at any of the 3 driving schools. On passing the BTT you may then proceed to apply for conversion at the Traffic Police Driving Test Centre counters in person, with the relevant documents. Driving licence not in English language
For a foreign driving licence that is not in English language, you are required to have an International Driving Permit in addition to the foreign driving licence. Translation is not required for licence issued by Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Foreign Driving licence that expires with the expiry of a foreign visa
If you are a Singaporean or PR who holds a foreign driving licence that expires with the expiry of a foreign visa, you are required to obtain a written extract from the licence issuing authority of the country that your licence was issued. The extract should show the passing date, date of issue of your licence, the class of licence attained and your driving record.
You have to register for the Basic Theory Test within 3 months from the date you return to Singapore so that your conversion may be granted subsequently.

Displaying distinguishing mark on vehicle during probation period
You are required to display the distinguishing mark on your vehicle if the issue date of your foreign driving licence is less than 1 year before the date of your application for conversion. You may stop displaying it after your 1 year probation period from the date of issue of your Singapore driving licence.

Drivers Improvement Points System (DIPS)
In the form that you submitted during the application for conversion of your foreign licence, you have affirmed that you have been informed that your licence will be revoked if you accumulate more than 12 demerit points within a 12-month period from the date of issue of your Singapore driving licence.
You will have to sit for all the prescribed driving theory and practical tests one year after the revocation in order to regain a new driving licence.

people who say we should pay bus drivers at the same level as first world countries need to understand that that is not a viable proposal unless you raise the bus fares. a quick check of, for example, norway’s bus fares tell me that they pay on average 10 times the amount we do in singapore. so unless you are willing to pay that much for taking the bus, you’re never going to see the wages of bus drivers being raised.
another example is something i’ve experience first-hand in australia. sure the people in australia who open restaurants, going to f&b etc. make quite a bit of money a month, but the average price per plate of food is like 10-15AUD which can work out to almost 20SGD. it’s common sense really, you want your wages to go up, be prepared to pay more for things. if you think things are expensive now, they will become even more expensive if minimum wage is implemented.
as much as i don’t appreciate the ruling party’s antics, implementing minimum wage or creating a welfare state is not the way to go. in a capitalist market, meritocracy is arguably the fairest way to go about things. sure people will say that there will always be ‘white horse’ and rich kids who have an advantage, but education is the great equaliser. you can’t say children don’t have the chance to work their ass off in school, graduate from university at the top and get a great job. if bus drivers are going to earn as much as doctors/lawyers/accountants etc., who would want to study that hard then? in the end instead of importing foreigners to become bus drivers, you are importing foreigners to become lawyers, doctors etc. imagine that, you go to TTSH and all you see are prc doctors.
a lot of university grads complain they aren’t able to find jobs when they graduate. tbh, most of them can find jobs, just that their expectations are too high. they are fed with the notion that when they enter and leave uni, they will be guaranteed a cushy job, which is often not the case unless you are the cream of the crop. these grads who are the average or worse in their cohort just have to suck it up and work harder to make it to where they want to be, instead of complaining. those who worked their asses off to finish top in school, rightfully will take their place ahead of the others when they graduate. that is after all the whole idea of meritocracy and capitalism no? or is something more akin to communism the preferred choice.

This is bullshit…stop saying having min wages things will get expensive…this is up to the government to correct things. If u do not know, S pass is the min wages for FTs. If the government doesn’t increase rental of land and electricity as when they like it, the inflation probably doesn’t even affect us that much, if the government conduct strict checks on the quota of local born and FTs in a company and set rules like fining the company if the headcounts doesn’t match, many jobless ppl will be off the streets. Its all up to the government. Many of the min wage countries are still good, i don’t see any reason not to implement the system. IF the government doesn’t open up its leg and welcome any tom dick harry, none of this will happened. Singapore was find before they came. There is Singaporeans doing every job, working hard, if not u think Singapore will be so prosperous? If the management keeps taking millions and millions while their staffs dunn get any increment or good bonus, do you think it is fair to them? Going to China to hire Chinese drivers to lower cost. Do they in the first place know the driving behaviours and rules of our roads.
I am running my own business. If business is bad, I take lesser profit but I never compromise workers’ salary. This should be the way. If they are worried about making losses, they can by all means close the company.

SBS has to stop conducting crash courses for these PRC drivers. Make them take and pass our stringent highway code and driving tests. SBS probably conducted an en masse recruitment in China and then shuffle them off to Singapore. Just cos they know how to drive does not mean they know our traffic laws. The many unfortunate and needless accidents is proof that the PRC drivers have not been well trained. Lets not blame the PRCs but the source of our nightmares — the SBS and its greedy board of directors whose only concern is maximising margins.
Please naturalise these foreigners first before letting them in. When I when to study in the US, they made sure I understand American Thought and Culture, took my TOEFL and then take an American Enlish course in my first sememster, they even insisted I took a dialogue course to speak with an impeccable American accent. The course did me good. Close your eyes and you’d think you are listening to an angmoh. Make the PRCs drop their guttural mandarin (our govt seems to like people who can mutli-task like thePRCs who can gargle and talk and the same time; or people who can say yes and shake their heads or nod when they say no) and insist they say milo-peng, kopi-o, teh-c, roti prata, etc… Ordering jian ping kong or jian ping jia dan in Little India is just not the same,

It is impt tat ppl (esp FT) learn and practice our basic, standard and existing rules properly. they chiong traffic light at their country doesnt mean sg can also chiong…
if not, come out 100 new rules but nobody follow also defeat the purposes as these new rules will just at most reduce accidents but is still not solving the root of the problems.

today while driving along Keppel Road (infront of Tanjong Pagar Complex) during morning rush hr where traffic was heaviest and most dangerous, a huge cement truck just stopped on the road and the driver on his hazard lights and just left his vehicle , presumably to buy “breakfast” at the hawker stalls there! His idiotic selfish act caused a huge blockage of traffic esp at that busy stretch of road , more so bec his vehicle was a bloody cement truck. Guess what? as I drove past I saw that the driver was a bloody mainland chinese bloke!

The bus company should be blamed & hold accountable for employing such irresponsible & unqualified drivers from the PRC. We are always talking about productivity yet lots of employers are engagings such PRCs. There must be some wrong with the recruitment process.

my dad is a sbs bus driver and holds class 2-5 driving license. I work as a driver and currently holds class 2-5 driving license as well.. Well guys u all think about this
Q1; why public bus drivers no need to wear seat belt?
Q2: why public bus passengers are allowed to stand?
Q3: why class 3 driving license allowed to drive a bus that can go as heavy as 12ton?
Q4: why the bus service have to exit there even though the exit is on the extreme right?
Q5: how long is their break at terminals and if they reach the terminal late, do they have a break?
Q6: does sufficient training given to the drivers as most only hold class 3 driving license?
