Aussie expat scolds Singapore NSmen: You are MORONS!!!

Posted by temasektimes on May 8, 2012

A seemingly innocuous discussion on rising ‘anti-foreigner’ sentiments among some Singaporeans on Facebook turned nasty with a heated exchange of words between an Australian expatriate working in Singapore and a group of Singapore NSmen, a sign of how sensitive the issue has become.

Parry has earlier chided Singaporeans to stop behaving like ‘babies’ prompting a sharp rebuke from a Singapore NSman Dennis Chua who asked him to ‘shut up’ if he did not serve National Service:

Dennis’ words touched a raw nerve on Parry who replied callously:

“‎Have you served National Service in Singapore?” <— that’s the only thing that SINGAPOREANS can ever retaliate with. What if I have? My opinion is still the same. What if a female made the same comment? MORONS…”

According to Troy Parry, he was born in Sydney and relocated to Singapore more than ten years ago:

Parry is a Singapore permanent resident, but has declined to take up Singapore citizenship, like many other foreigners who want to enjoy the ‘best of both worlds’ at the expense of Singaporeans, especially the men serving National Service to ensure they can make a decent living in a safe and stable environment.

Without ‘morons’ like us spending the most precious years of our youth defending and protecting Singapore, will they even come to Singapore in the first place?

Instead of showing some basic respect and appreciation for the sacrifices made by Singaporean men, Parry found fit to lecture them and even hurled insults at them which made a mockery of repeated exhortations by PAP leaders to Singaporeans to welcome foreigners.

Speaking at a community forum lately, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean said Singapore needs to pay extra attention to facilitating the new immigrants who are ready to sink roots here, so that they integrate into society more quickly.

“Singaporeans need to do their part to make newcomers feel welcome, and to help them imbibe the values that have made Singapore strong as a society,” he said.

Going by DPM Teo’s line of reasoning, Singaporeans should reflect on what they can do to make foreigners like Troy Parry feel welcomed in Singapore and maybe for a beginning, they should accept his ‘compliment’ that they are ‘MORONS’ as well.

PRC bus driver Chen Hongyan jailed one week only for causing death of Singaporean student

Posted by temasektimes on May 8, 2012

Life is cheap nowadays, it seems. While motorists can be jailed for a few weeks for drink-driving, a PRC bus driver who caused the death of a 19 year old Singaporean student in a fatal traffic accident was jailed only a week, a shocking verdict which left many netizens fuming.

Chen Hongyan pleaded guilty to driving negligently by failing to keep a proper lookout and causing a fatal accident as a result.

36 year old Chen Hongyang was in her first month as an SBS Transit bus driver when she got into a traffic accident at the traffic junction of Tampines Avenue 8 and Tampines Street 84 where she turned right without noticing Temasek Polytechnic student Toh Jia Wei riding his motorcycle in the opposite direction.

The young man who would have a bright future ahead of him, was killed on the spot. Yet, the state media appeared to sympathize more with Chen Hongyan, saying that she has dependents in China who are now in a bind after she lost her job.

Speaking in Parliament lately, Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew reassured Singaporeans that all foreign drivers are ‘adequately’ trained before they are allowed to drive on Singapore roads:

“The more important thing actually is to make sure (that), regardless of nationality, every driver is adequately trained, appropriately qualified, and especially if they come from abroad, then they are given the kind of orientation that will help them familiarise themselves with the peculiarities of the system in Singapore.”

Foreign bus drivers like Chen Hongyan reportedly undergo a more ‘rigorous’ and longer training by SBS Transit. About 13 percent of bus drivers in Singapore and foreigners and the percentage excludes those who have been ‘converted’ to Singapore PRs, probably the ONLY country in the world which gives PRs to bus drivers.

Some responses from Hardwarezone forumers:

“Seriously sia, kill a life, 1 week jail? No suspension of license meh. Fug the gahmen man.” – swashlylahs

“english can be learned within 21 days for a china FT? seriously cut cost until like that. sigh” – noobie

“154 even tried to show concern by publishing she got dependents in china.. Wat abt the victim ?So next time u bang anyone, pls be a FT..” – 4Dluckystrike

CGH PERVERT doctor Ivan Ngeow Ko Yen gets probation only for flashing his genitals at NUS girl

Posted by temasektimes on May 8, 2012

Changi General Hospital (CGH) PERVERT doctor Ivan Ngeow Ko Yen (pic left) was given a mere ‘touch’ on his wrist when he was put on probation for one year only for insulting the modesty of a 19-year-old undergraduate instead of a jail term which is the usual case.

For the offence, he could be jailed up to one year and fined.

In an earlier case, a man was jailed six months for exposing himself to his 11 year old daughter.

The 37 year old doctor from Malaysia had admitted in March to dressing up as a Victoria Junior College student and lifting his skirt to expose his genitals to the girl in August 2010.

He also repeated the same ‘feat’ to another girl who agreed to compound his offence for $5,000.

In mitigation, Ngeow’s lawyer claimed he has been secretly ‘cross-dressing’ since he was nine years old.

Despite the gravity of his offence and the fact he is currently seeing a psychiatrist, CGH still allows him to work in the hospital, stressing that Dr Ivan Ngeow remains ‘very much part of its team.

Though Dr Ivan Ngeow is a Senior Resident Physician in Geriatric Medicine, he will need to interact with young female nurses and medical students in the course of his work as well.

In a statement released to the media, a CGH spokesperson said efforts to help Dr Ivan Ngeow ‘get back to his feet’ have led to him being allowed to see patients again and “he remained under the close supervision of his head of department”, Asst Professor Chuo Mee Leh Adeline

Posted by temasektimes on May 8, 2012

30 year old Han Guiqiang was angry with his wife Fu Wenjuan for returning home late on May 1 and threw her luggage bag out of their rented flat in Woodlands.

Fu retaliated and threw Han’s suitcase out of the window as well.

Fortunately, the two pieces of luggage did not hit anybody and landed on the grass below the flat. However, a neighbor witnessed the scene and lodged a police report.

Both Han and Fu were each jailed two weeks for their inconsiderate act.

Han is a Singapore PR. His occupation was not revealed.

Tackle the cause and not the symptoms: Rising online ‘xenophobia’ is a result of failed integration

Posted by temasektimes on May 8, 2012

The rising number of ‘anti-foreigner’ sentiments being expressed in cyberspace has led to calls from Minister of Information, Communication and Arts Dr Yaacob Ibrahim (MICA) and some pro-PAP bloggers like Andrew Loh to devise an online code of conduct to control the internet under the guise of allowing the online community to ‘self-moderate’ itself.

In response to queries from a netizen, PAP MP Baey Yam Kim urged the online community to speak up against witch hunts and lynch mobs:

“The online community must be prepared to stand up for injustice, and speak up against witch hunts and lynch mobs, and not join in the bandwagon.”

Strictly speaking, ‘xenophobia’ is defined by an irrational fear and rejection of anybody or things which are foreign in nature and Singaporeans can hardly be considered to be ‘xenophobic’ given their high level of tolerance to immigrants and acceptance of foreign cultures and values.

The increasingly frequent tirades directed at foreigners and expression of nationalistic sentiments on the internet is a symptom of a wider underlying social problem lurking beneath the surface – the failed integration of thousands of immigrants which we have accepted in recent years and a perception that locals are being neglected in favor of the newcomers.

Chan Chun Sing: Doesn’t matter if me or Chuan Jin becomes Prime Minister

Posted by temasektimes on May 8, 2012

In a sign that Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Chan Chun Sing is being earmarked for bigger things ahead, a Chines tabloid conducted an extensive interview with him to raise his national profile.

Speaking from the comforts of his home, Mr Chan appeared to be relaxed and even philosophical as he recalled how his life has changed since entering politics.

Insisting that he has not forgotten his humble roots – Mr Chan’s parents were separated when he was young and his mother brought him up single-handedly, Mr Chan said he bought a second hand car after becoming a minister and he still goes shopping for groceries with his wife.

“I work and sleep later than before and is subjected to greater public scrutiny….I hope my children will have a normal childhood like the rest,” he said.

When asked if there is any competition between him and fellow newcomer Tan Chuan-Jin, both of whom have been tipped to be prime ministerial candidates in the future, Mr Chan denied any competition between them:

“It doesn’t matter who becomes the Prime Minister. What is more important is that we continue to work hard as a team to better serve the people and to make Singapore a better place for all of us.”

Teo Ser Luck: Apologizing too often will lose its meaning

Posted by temasektimes on May 8, 2012

Political leaders should apologize if they make a mistake, but doing too often will lose its meaning, said Young PAP Chairman and MP Teo Ser Luck.

Speaking to queries from a journalist on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s apology on the eve of the General Election last year which helped to win some sympathy votes for the PAP, Mr Teo said:

“If political leaders really make a mistake or unintentionally hurt the feelings of others, they should apologize.”

(“政治人物真的犯错,或是无意间伤害到他人的感受时,应该道歉。”)

Soon after PM Lee’s apology, other PAP ministers and MPs follow suit and the word ‘sorry’ became a ‘vogue’ for a period of time.

However, Mr Teo warned that political figures should not just apologize for the sake of apologizing or it will lose its meaning altogether.

“‘Sorry’ is not our popular word,” he added.

(“‘对不起’不是我们的流行语。”)

Mr Teo also felt that it is ‘inevitable’ that some Singaporeans have the perception of the PAP being ‘arrogant’ as it has been ruling the country for many years:

“We will continue to work hard on the ground to improve the lives of the people and one day they will feel our sincerity.”

Former Reform Party candidate Alex Tan Zhixiang has decided to quit Singapore for good

Posted by temasektimes on May 8, 2012

I am one of those many young people out there like the commentator on Temasek Times above who have grown disillusioned of Singapore and wanting to emigrate out of here. Like him, I always go to explain at great lengths of how Singapore is really like to curious foreigners over a chat.

My girlfriend is a S-pass holder and she totally agrees with what I’ve said about Singapore’s system and the sorry state of affairs here and how we will suffer like the rest with a government who takes their citizens for granted.

We intend to get married this year but family planning or baby making is a no-no until we settled down in either Sans Franscisco(her cousin’s family is there already) or Auckland(my preference).

I am currently getting my engineering degree and working full time to save up a modest fund by 2014 when I graduated.

My current job as an engineer in a specialized trade is in the long term skill shortage list for immigration, and what attracted me is they are paying 2 to 3 times higher than what I’m getting here in Singapore.

In Singapore, my trade is in high demand, but apparently the Singapore employers wants to have their cake and eat it too. They resorted to hiring cheap foreign engineers and expected the existing engineers to train them, which is impossible without the necessary qualifications in knowledge.

These foreign engineers have a engineering degree but they are at best technician-quality and not engineers who innovate solutions and manage a team. The main reason why productivity is falling especially in my trade is because they hardly think about plausible solutions or simply just talk…perhaps talking is strenuous as their communication skills are poor, probably thinking too as their mindset are unfortunately very much framed up.

There are enough frustrations working with low quality foreigners in our midst and I don’t see why I should put up working with them learning nothing new and always teaching, and if I want to teach, I might as well go back to be a A-Maths tutor like during my National Slavery days where I could easily earn more doing it full time today than what I could get now.

In countries like New Zealand, they have a sound social safety net and their society’s order and economic indicators would never become as polarized and extreme like Singapore’s. Why? Simply because their governance is built on the choice of the people, and this is democracy I’m talking about.

The citizens will moderate the country’s system with opposing forces always resonating among themselves to attract the majority’s support. But in Singapore, all of us have to listen to the PAP because the Opposition is kept very weak.

There are no adaptations of any logical proposals that doesn’t run align with PAP’s political inclinations and the PAP will simply dismiss them as populist or radical(this choice of word by the PAP is a scare tactic…radical…oh my…could be a terrorist’s idea…like the wage shock therapy from Dr Lim Chong Yah).

With PAP grassroot leaders and the mainstream media always currying favors by presenting skewed ground sentiments to their MPs and Ministers, Singaporeans ended up voiceless and policies become disconnected with reality. Look no further than at Lee Hsien Loong’s facebook. That is the breeding ground of radical PAP extremists.

There are thousands of cult-like responses supporting the PAP and they would attack any anti-PAP sentiments or have the moderator deleting them like this[Link]. I sometimes wonder if I served National Slavery to protect these disgusting people, and there is 60% like them in Singapore.

My decision to leave Singapore is more motivated by the push factors that are largely disappointments of Singapore’s system than the pull factors of retirement and family-friendly environments in New Zealand and US. Singapore is my home, I love Singapore especially when I grew up during the golden years that is the 1990s. I would like my children to grow up in the 1990s Singapore the way I did but that is no longer possible here.

On my conscience level, at least I have decided to leave Singapore with a fight(that is to partake in the Opposition). I fought, I lost and now I’m gone because my family come first. People around me are telling me to stick for 2016 Elections and I told them I am not going to waste my youth here and I am telling my friends to leave as well, for my very last struggle with the PAP is to deny them the very young people they need to sustain their political dominance.
