Ex-Singapore idol finalist Norman Then LAUGHS after watching Bugis accident video: Crash and burn…Hahaha

Posted by temasektimes on May 16, 2012

While most Singaporeans are shocked and outraged by the video clip of the Bugis accident last Saturday morning, which saw one speeding Ferrari ramming into a Hyundai Sonata taxi killing himself and two other victims, one Singaporean guy is having a great time laughing at it.

Ex-Singapore Idol finalist Norman Then, a graduate of Ngee Polytechnic and currently working at ‘Ice Cold Beer’ posted a sadistic comment on his Facebook last night:

“When I watching the video of the PRC guy smashing into the taxi. My first instinct was…. To LAUGH. People in the car didn’t think it was funny though. Perhaps next time I’ll try another reaction…….. Singing perhaps….”crash and burn” savage garden. Hahahahaha.”

[Source: Norman Then’s Facebook]

Norman remained unfazed by the feedback given by his friends who were disgusted by his comment and wrote in his next post that ‘life is a joke’ to him:

Norman Then was the top 12 finalist for Season 2 of Singapore Idol:

It is not a joke that two innocent man and woman had died from the accident, one of whom was the sole breadwinner of the family and the daughter now has to put her plans to further her studies in the university as a result.

Is it too much to show a bit of sympathy and compassion towards a fellow Singaporean? We urge Norman Then to apologize publicly for his insensitive remarks on Facebook.

Passenger in Ma Chi’s Ferrari is a PRC student Wu Weiwei who just graduated from a private school

Posted by temasektimes on May 16, 2012

The mysterious female passenger in PRC man Ma Chi’s Ferrari has been identified as a PRC woman Ms Wu Weiwei from Hubei province.

Ma Chi crashed his red Ferrari into a Comfort Delgro taxi driven by Singaporean cabby Cheng Teck Hock in the early hours of Saturday morning at a Bugis junction between Rochor Road and Victoria Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Mr Cheng, 52, and his Japanese passenger, Ms Shigemi Ito, later died in hospital.

Ms Wu suffered a fractured leg in the accident and underwent an operation on Monday. Her condition is currently stable and is recovering in a high-dependency ward at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

It is unclear how Ms Wu ended up in Ma Chi’s car in the middle of the night. None of friends nor his wife (pic left) know the existence of Ms Wu whose friends said she had just graduated from a hospitality course at the East Asia Institute of Management.

They also refute reports by a local Chinese tabloid that she is working at a KTV lounge at a hostess, claiming that she comes from a ‘reputable’ family in China.

When asked about Ma Chi, they said they have seen him before with Ms Wu, but declined to comment on their ‘relationship’, adding that she already has a boyfriend.

PRC netizens speculate that Ma Chi may be linked to a fugitive mafia boss from Chongqing?

Posted by temasektimes on May 16, 2012

Despite the constant harping on his immense ‘wealth’ by the Singapore media, questions still linger on how PRC man Ma Chi (马驰) managed to amass such a huge fortune at only 31 years of age.

Ma Chi has become a public figure of hate in Singapore after his speeding Ferrari rammed into a Comfort Delgro taxi in the early hours of Saturday morning killing himself and two other victims, a Japanese woman Shigemi Ito and a 52 year old cabby Cheng Teck Hock, who leaves behind 3 children aged between 16 and 21 years old.

The Ferrari 599GTO is of limited edition and reportedly worth S$1.4 million dollars.

According to one local socio-political blog ‘TR Emeritus’, Ma Chi is linked to a fugitive mafia boss by the name of Ma Yong (马永) from the city of Chongqing. He fled south to the city of Guangzhou in 2007 after a crackdown initiated on criminal gangs by then Chongqing Communist Party Chief Bo Xilai and his police chief Wang Lijun.

The blog also claimed that several postings by PRC netizens alleged that “Ma Chi was involved in money-laundering in Hong kong, to the tune of several millions a month.”

[Source: TR Emeritus]

However, we are unable to find any postings by PRC netizens on the subject matter so far.

The shocking accident was given extensive publicity in by both the print and new media, fueling already rampant anti-foreigner sentiments in Singapore as angry Singaporeans vent their frustration at the government’s immigration policies online.

Desmond Choo: I share a kiss with my wife every morning

Posted by temasektimes on May 16, 2012

In an attempt to portray himself as a loving and caring husband, PAP candidate for Hougang Desmond Choo revealed his intimate moments with his wife to the media.

Speaking to reporters at the Nomination Center, Mr Choo stressed that his wife’s support is essential to this campaign, adding that he and his wife share a kiss every morning and that has still not changed.

Mr Choo married his civil servant wife in July last year.

“Her kiss keeps me going throughout the day. Though she has to go to work, I know she will always be with me and ready to help me out via whatsapp and sms. She has a way of delivering sweet messages to me” he said.

When asked about his opponent, Workers Party candidate Mr Png Eng Huat, Mr Choo said they are on good terms and have spoken earlier, promising each other that they will sit down to chit chat over coffee regardless of how the results turn out.

The current deputy director of NTUC’s youth development unit believes they will become “fast friends”.

“At the end of the day, it’s about two passionate people fighting for the (good) of Hougang residents”.

The seat of Hougang fell vacant after its former WP MP Yaw Shin Leong was sacked by the party for his failure to address swirling rumors around his alleged extramarital affairs with multiple married women, including two key female leaders of the party who contest in the General Election last year.

Many political pundits such as Derek Da Cunha and Eugene Tan have written off the chances of Mr Desmond Choo, with Yahoo News proclaiming an ‘easy victory’ for Mr Png Eng Huat even before a single vote is counted.

PRC students attend cabby Cheng Teck Hock’s wake to offer condolences and support

Posted by temasektimes on May 16, 2012

Since the beginning of the week, we have received several emails from members of the public offering financial assistance to the family of the late Cheng Teck Hock, including PRC students who are currently studying in Singapore.

Mr Cheng was driving his Hyundai Sonata taxi across a junction between Rochor Road and Victoria Street in the early hours of Saturday afternoon before a red Ferrari driven by a PRC national Ma Chi beat the red light and crashed into him.

Ma Chi died on the spot and the Japanese passenger Shigemi Ito in Mr Cheng’s taxi passed away hours later in hospital.

Mr Cheng was declared brain dead by doctors and finally succumbed to his injuries on Sunday evening leaving behind three children aged between 16 and 21. His eldest daughter has to put a halt  to her plans to further her studies in universities

One PRC student Zhang Jingshu attended the wake of Mr Cheng last night:

“Today I visited the funeral of the late cabby Mr Cheng and felt sorry and sad for him. All the Weibo users, residing in Singapore or in China, are condemning or even cursing Ma Chi.”

Another PRC student from NUS Heng Bin attended the wake with a group of friends and donated some $500 to the family.

“I feel very sorry for the family. In China, he (Ma Chi) would be cruxified by the public and his family will have to attend the funeral of the victims and bow to them.”

PRC nationals are also appalled at the coverage of the accident by local media. One staff nurse Li Bei wrote in an email to us:

“In Guangzhou, the family would be on ‘Guangzhou Focus’ (current affairs talkshow) and publicly shamed. I am shocked your media is actually praising how rich and successful he is. We spit on such people in China.”

Some other responses from PRC nationals in Singapore on Lion City Forum:

“悲剧!一场车祸毁了几个家庭,为了自己和家人我们应惜福,对自己所做所为负责。最痛苦的是他们的亲人。” – desnow

“有钱人好练。害死无辜的几条人命,新加坡的马路就算晚上开车也是按交通灯走的,因为新加坡人就是这么呆板。无辜的德士司机死都放不下。家属在跟他讲这不是他的错,他才含泪而去。更可悲的事,肇事者家属,自顾自办后事,连个电话安慰都没有。无情无义。丢脸啊。” – cbj

“实际上事故的责任不会因为肇事者死亡而自动消失。两辆车的死者都是家里的经济支柱。善后如何得到妥善的处理,的士家庭如何获得合理的赔偿,肇事者家庭会不会出现人道主义灾难,这才是大家现在应该关注的。法拉利司机是要为自己的死负责,但他母亲,妻子和腹中的孩子还是值得同情的吧。” – nvm

Comfort Delgro has started a donation drive for Mr Cheng’s family.

Members of the public can make cheques payable to “LIM CHOO ENG” and mail them to:

THE CHENG FAMILY
c/o Comfort Transportation Pte Ltd
383 Sin Ming Drive
Singapore 575717
Attn: Customer Service Centre

Donors should indicate their names on the back of their cheques.

We are in contact with one member of the Cheng family. Singaporean employers who wish to offer a job to the eldest daughter of Mr Cheng can email us at temasektimes@yahoo.com. Thanks!

Breaking News: Straight fight between PAP’s Desmond Choo and WP’s Png Eng Huat in Hougang by-election

Posted by temasektimes on May 16, 2012

Despite the possibility of having a multi-cornered fight in Hougang with WP member Dr Poh Lee Guan and ex-member Zeng Guoyuan collecting their political donation certificates yesterday, it will be a straight fight between the PAP and WP’s chosen candidates in the Hougang by-election.

Returning Officer Yam Ah Mee has declared Png Eng Huat of the Workers’ Party and Desmond Choo of the People’s Action Party as candidates for Hougang by-election on 26 May.

Acupuncturist Zeng Guoyuan was reportedly ‘disqualified’ with no proposal and seconder, on top of his conviction of verbally abusing a public servant in 2008.

“People want somebody who is independent. By coming in, I know who I stand for. I won’t be stopped next time,” he said in response to queries from Yahoo News.

However, at 12.19pm, an officer from the Elections Department clarified with The Straits Times that Mr Zeng had not been disqualified. He did not even file his papers. and hence technically, it cannot be called a disqualification

Another possible candidate, WP member Poh Lee Guan did not turn up at the nomination centre. He told reporters at a block near the nomination centre that he wanted to be a “backup” and he did not inform his party because he was ‘busy’ with his lectures.

The seat of Hougang fell vacant after its former WP MP Yaw Shin Leong was sacked by the party for his failure to address swirling rumors around his alleged extramarital affairs with multiple married women, including two key female leaders of the party who contest in the General Election last year.

Many political pundits such as Derek Da Cunha and Eugene Tan have written off the chances of the PAP, with Yahoo News proclaiming an ‘easy victory’ for WP’s candidate Png Eng Huat.

The Elections Department said there are 23,368 eligible voters in the by-election for the single-seat constituency of Hougang.

There will also be overseas voting. A total of 43 overseas Singaporeans will vote in eight cities, such as Canberra, San Francisco, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

Ma Chi’s Ferrari estimated to be speeding at more than 180 kilometers per hour

Posted by temasektimes on May 16, 2012

The video clip showing Ma Chi’s red Ferrari speeding across a junction in Bugis and ramming into a Hyundai Sonata had gone viral in cyberspace, leading many netizens to speculate on its likely speed.

One netizen Brian Tan did a simple calculation and estimate the speed to be more than 180km/h:

“I did a simple calculation by breaking the video down to 30 frames per sec and measured via google map the distance from the pedestrian crossing white line to the position of the taxi and the following is the result:

11 frames for Ferrari to travel from white line to taxi = 0.367sec
Distance traveled estimated to be 18.9857m
The Ferrari was travelling at a minimum of 186.2359km/h

The taxi which was driven by Singaporean cabby Cheng Teck Hong had the right of way and was traveling across the junction between Rochor Road and Victoria Street before the Ferrari appeared out of nowhere and rammed into its left side.

The Singapore traffic police is still conducting its own investigation into the accident. A key witness of the accident is the mysterious PRC lady in Ma Chi’s Ferrari whose condition is stable and is currently recuperating in Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

PM Lee reminds Singaporeans: We have to continue to welcome ‘talent’

Posted by temasektimes on May 16, 2012

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has sent another timely reminder to Singaporeans that they have to continue to welcome ‘foreign talent’ to cope with increasingly fierce competition from other countries.

In a posting on Facebook, PM Lee used an article on BBC News about Philippines to illustrate his point:

“Philippines developing their call centres business, and overtaking India. This is the international backdrop to our own efforts to raise wages of low- and middle-income workers. Singapore does not exist in a vacuum; we face direct and increasingly fierce competition from other countries.”

PM Lee explained that Singaporean workers will face growing competition from foreigners as more and more services will be outsourced to less developed countries where labor cost is lower which is why the government cannot afford to increase the wages of Singapore workers.

This is why, although we want our workers to earn more, we cannot simply push up Singaporean wages as we would like. Globalisation and technology make this impossible.”

However, PM Lee promised he will watch the inflow of foreign workers even as Singapore will continue to welcome ‘talent’:

“We will watch the inflow of foreign workers, so that Singaporeans don’t get overwhelmed. But in the long term, the only way for our workers to do better is to compete on knowledge and innovation, upgrade our skills, and stay ahead of the pack. We also have to continue welcoming talent, to boost our competitive edge.”

Disgusted Singaporean ‘suans’ Ma Chi’s family: The dead can’t apologize, but surely those alive can do so?
