Singaporean expat writes to PM Lee: When I return to Singapore, I felt I am in China

Posted by temasektimes on May 3, 2012

Dearest PM Lee,

I am a truebreed Singaporean living & working abroad at this moment. It saddened me the last few times when I came back. Can you maybe do something?

These are few of the recalled incidents during my last 2 trips back.

1. Groups of PRC Workers…some with “Half-headed perm” long sleeves shirt tucked out, long black pants and thongs (Blue & white) hanging in ION Shopping Mall, talking very loud.

POINT : You invested so much to beautify the place and yet you let these ugly sights bring everything down?

2. When I arrived at the airport, I headed down to Terminal 3 foodcourt to grab a bite. While queueing up for my favourite Fried Kway Teow, I noticed the auntie behind the wok was a PRC. Then the Angmo infront of me tried to place a special order WITHOUT MEAT. He tried to explain to the PRC Auntie, the whole scene was basically a chicken & duck talk. In the end PRC Auntie turned to me for translation, she didnt even thanked me, she just kept mumbling about him having such stupid request.

POINT : Yes we need these ppl to do these jobs but have u noticed that What would the Angmo think of this situation? Singaporean cannot speak English? Once again u have put somebody out there to shame us.

3. A friend of mine had some problem with his MRT Transitlink card went forward to the control station to check. Yes again, the person behind the counter is young PRC girl. The girl could speak English but it was obviously she was struggling very hard. In the end she told my friend off….CHINESE CANNOT SPEAK CHINESE? Of course my friend made a fuss to her supervisor andthat goes on…

POINT : Again…a PRC frontliner who was not trained to speak english well or to at least have some manners.

4. I had dinner at Crystal Jade Restaurant Takashimaya. PRC waitresses everywhere. It was not possible to order in English. Why? They see we are Chinese looking Singaporean, first thing they already started the conversation in Chinese. 1 of them was even scolding a cashier auntie (singaporean or malaysian) aloud, it kept on going and going….

POINT : Frontline again……..please dun do that so open. I do not know how is it like in China but this is Singapore.

5. Finally going back. Went to SQ counter to check in. Happen to be serviced by this PRC Check-in person….HAIZ…..I no words say anyhow….ENGLISH is SIBEI DE JIALAT. I had a hard time trying to figure out what she was talking.

POINT : FRONTLINE LEH………PLEASE……..

Dun misunderstood me, I also have some PRC good friends, I have no means to put them down here. I tried my best to understand the situation that we need them but have you not realized what kind of image they portraited SINGAPORE? I love my country I love Singapore. Whenever I come back to Singapore I felt like I am in China…Why?

Karin at least you can speak to them in Mandarin. Imagine the frustrations of those who can’t! Everyday we encounter this same problem but we just bear with it because as we say here “no choice”. Can’t communicate, find someone to translate. Can’t find translator…just walk away buy from somewhere else. This is the new reality here.

thanks to govt. hope you citizens benefitted from the ‘economic success’ of bringing all these PRCs in. Because last time I spoke to citizens, people were losing jobs and wages were getting cheaper because of these super cheap workers……. . Other than govt taxes, travel, housing become expensive and cars coe off the roof, I dunno who else benefitted.
thank you pap. making singapore such a great place.

We have to deal with such situations every single day. Seeing our once beautiful country that we true Singaporeans worked so hard to build being destroy day by day, our reputation ruined everyday, yet we can’t do anything to save it.

I once heard a tourist yelled angrily at a counter staff at a restaurent ” what happenned to you Singaporeans? Simple English and you don’t even understand!”

I can’t help but tap that angmo from behind to clarify that this person he yelled at is a PRC, not a Singaporean.

  10. There are so many PRCs in Singapore because they’ve been given the following invitation:

    来自中国大陆的旅客!您好,欢迎您到新加坡南阳市,中国人民共和国的第二十四届省!

    虽然新加坡是进一步远离祖国的中国在接近香港或台湾的对比,很容易为我们中国大陆的兄弟姐妹们,学习或工作相比,在新加坡的两个主要中国领土。

    再次,欢迎到新加坡,我是你们的停止便捷的垫脚石!佳友!

Visitors from mainland China! Hello and welcome to Singapore City in Nanyang Province, the 24th province of the People’s Republic of China!

Though Singapore is much further away from our motherland China in contrast to the close proximity of Hong Kong or Taiwan, it is easier for our mainland Chinese brothers and sisters to study or work in Singapore compared to the two predominantly Chinese territories.

Once again, welcome to Singapore, your one-stop convenient stepping stone! Jia You!

I was wondering the same…Though I must agree with Karin that frontliners MUST be able to speak English. By the way, some Singaporean chinese on the frontline can’t speak English either…so just as bad as the China folks too in terms of service.

      • kon said

hahas! I was wondering, after reading what Karin said, if this person actually is in the right position to criticise others, reminds me of one of those Singaporeans that behave way worse than those people from china and complain day in day out. Yes. Singapore has let in too many people from China, with such ease. It’s like people from China/overseas, just go to Singapore to get an easy citizenship for a better life. Why can’t our government think about the welfare of their people, treating Singapore as a country and stop treating it as a business?

(Chinese name for Nasi Lemak) Say lah… Chinese don’t know how to speak chinese meh??!!’ I wanted to tell her that I’m actually straits chinese… meaning – BaBa.

Chinatown has some of my childhood memories… A few weeks ago, I passed by and thinking of grabbing a bit as we all know that there are a lot of yummies in Chinatown. I took a walk near People’s Park Center and market and stood there 30min, without knowing what to eat… The fact is – there are SO MANY ‘Chinese food’!!! And for a moment, I thought I was in China! Some provinces or something… Where are all our Singapore food??

    Dear PM Lee,

You have strived so hard for this nation! Always trying to make it a better place… To teach the people to be gracious… Our more than 10 years of ‘Courtesy Campaign’ to educate the public…?? What happened? Now that the Singaporeans has learnt to keep our city clean and be polite and queue… Have you notice that these Chinese has been spoiling it all??!!

They spit everywhere, throw used sanitary pads through HDB windows (Have you seen it?), always trying not to queue, speak loudly on public transport… What will the tourists think?

I have been traveling… (like Karin) But I also want a HOME.

Do you know how painful it is to witness your own home being ‘devoured’ by (pardon me) PESTS?

Most PRC when boarding my cab, they start to blast in mandarin. After they finished, I simply explained “speak english”… they start blasting mandarin again. All I can do is shake my head and talk in malay… then they realised my cue and board another taxi.
Are they stupid or what… the immigration policy n the people that open the floodgate to this kind of FT… IT IS AN INSULT TO MINORITY SINGAPOREAN but now I am more empathy TO ALL TRUEBREED SINGAPOREAN.

    • Pakcik, i feel you. at least the chinese can speak to the PRC. i really dont understand why the frontliners cant speak english. its not that we worship Western countries but singapore is a multiracial country and between the many races, english is our only common language. Its not too much to ask that when FT come here, they learn how to communicate with us. not we learn how to communicate with them. i think the French have it right by using the assimilating model instead of singapore’s mutlicultural melting pot one. obviously, ours isnt working.

“When I return to Singapore, I felt I am in China…” That’s because you are an anti-Chinese racist.

This article first appears in Temasek Times. That site, like others carrying the name Temasek, have printed many articles against Chinese in general, and PRC in particular. Temasek refers to that South-east Asian part of an Indian Empire which is long gone. It is an insult to the Chinese in Chinese-majority Singapore to use this name. It fans the flame of Indian racism and chauvinism. How many of us still remember how the name of Temasek Holdings came about? The company was originally named Sheng Li (胜利)which means “Victory” in Mandarin. Some vocal anti-Chinese racists protested against it, condemning it as too “cheena”. When it was changed to Temasek, all quietened down. It is obvious what race those protesters belong to. It is obvious who are running Temasek Times. S~n~a~k~y racist Indians! They are using it to flame racial sentiments. If the authority is not going to do something about this, matters may get out of hand.

The number of Indians are increasing in Singapore. This is a fact recorded by the Dept. of Statistics yearly published Population Trend in Singapore under the Ethnic Composition section. Indians have almost doubled since Independence and Chinese has declined to less than 75 %. The Indians presence in Singapore is so much felt, more than that of the PRC. They don’t only speak loudly, they also stink badly. If you go were to make a trip to Tekka/Serangoon Road area on a weekend, all the trains and buses to Little India will be full of Indians and the air inside them will be filled with the typical Indian stink. When you arrive in Little India itself, you will be presented with the sight of a dark moving sea of Indians. The whole place is darkened. The don’t confine themselves to the shopping areas. They spread themselves out to the residential neighborhoods. The unfortunate residents there have to bear with the noise, the rowdy behaviors, the filth and mess left behind. Worst of all, they are a security nightmare. They endanger the safety of the residents, especially the females in the areas. Despite all these and more, there is not a single article written about the menace of Indians in Singapore. S~n~a~k~y racist Indians!

The Indians are enhancing their racial identity globally. Wherever in the world they may be, they refer to themselves collectively as People of Indian Origin. They are creating a global race called Global Indians. In the January of every year, India celebrates Overseas India Day when Indians anywhere in the world are reminded of their allegiance to Mother India. These global racist Indians want to stamp their presence in Singapore by establishing more and more Global Indian schools so much so that MM Lee had to put a stop to it by telling these racists to go back to India!

There are so many complaints about PRC Chinese not speaking Chinese. How many Indians speak English? The Indian laborers know sh*it about English. Even those fake Indian professionals, when they speak English, they do so with their comical Indian accent, like Mickey Mouse. It would be more correct to say that they spoil, rather than speak, English.

If the writer is someone who claims to have returned from overseas, he should know that there is no where in the world which is English-speaking only, not even in the original home of the English-language, England. We are leaving in a multi-cultural world. If you do not know the language of your own culture, you will be despised by people of other cultures. In Chinese majority Singapore, if you are a Chinese, but do not speak a word of Chinese and refuse to learn the language, you are pathetic; you are in the wrong place. Bugger off!

    • Chee Cheong Fun said

The issue that should be focused on should not be about race…afterall, is it not our National Pledge to “pledge ourselves as one united people, regardless of race, language or religion…”

The problem is, Singapore is a multi-cultural society, people in the service line must be able to speak English. It has nothing to do with being Indian, Chinese, Filipino or Malay. While every race has the responsibility to preserve and use their language, when you’re in a country with other races, it is NECESSARY to speak a language that everyone understands.

If it is about using the national language, then please…everyone would be speaking malay now. But it is English that is used in the business & social world today, cos the majority speaks it. Modern Singapore is a multiracial community, and using a language that excludes the other races in the country when service is required is unacceptable.

Your comment here is flawed and unfortunately presents a poor example of being a Singaporean. You’re even more racist than the others you claim of doing so.

      • TrulyAsia said

Thank God i am a Chinese, who is bilingual ,and a Christian. That allows me to have a proper perspective where we respect everyone irregardless of background. Once you understand the environment that another person grew up in, esp from another country, you will have more empathy for them. God loves everyone, and wants us to love them like we love ourselves. However, if the immigration policy is flawed, and there is too much of an influx of foreigners, the govt shud respect the people and seek to finetune the policy. Pls respect the Indians in this country. They have contributed immensely in the building of this nation, far beyond their actual numbers. As for smell, it is the spices that they use n coconut oil. Learn a bit of Tamil, it is fun.

what’s your point here? Read the article again and u will realize all those unpleasent encounters this person experience had to do with PRCs. Like many of us. We dun usually see Indians spit or throw rubbish as and when they want to. We all know who did so. And everywhere we turn, those who talks damn loudly are those PRCs. We dun hear Indians using eardrum-piercing tone when they talk.
I dun really care what Temasak really means. I know Temasak Times is on Singaporeans’ side and they provide a place for true Singaporeans like us to voice out our frustrations. Some may think those crude comments are unapproprate to be approved here but l think otherwise. Would u rather have a site that is fairytale like, juz like the PM Lee Facebook where only nice comments will be allowed? Think abt the hard work and risk The Temasak Times took here. Give them some credit!

    • You sir are a racist yourself.
And what about the minorities who dont speak chinese? they’re not entitled to service?
At least those who speak up against PRCs, do so for their love of their own country.

    Well, try this.

I went into a shop in Paragon Shopping Centre one day wanting to buy a product. While looking for the product I wanted, a PRC sales assistant came to me asking me if I need help in English. Nice.

Guess what? After telling her what I wanted, she replied with a HuH? I thought I was speaking too fast so I repeated myself slowly. After a couple of times more, with ‘huh’ for replies, I asked her if she knew what I am talking about. She replied no.

I turned to another sales assistant for help, happened to be a Pinoy. Nice, at least she can speak english to a certain extent. Guess whats the reply? “It’s all there. If it’s not there, then we do not have it.”

I shook my head in disbelief and walked away.

(My point here is, employing someone who speaks minimal english = no communication = no service.)

(Employing someone who ask the customer to look for things himself, where is the service? So why am I paying for the service tax?)

What happened to Singapore service quality? It has deteriorated from bad to no service!!! Truly disappointed.

I was in a long queue at a very crowded AMK ntuc and an FT Indian man was in front of me. An old lady came along and said “excuse me” with a gracious smile, cos she wanted to get to the other side and the long queue had blocked her way. Immediately, I took a step back but not enough to let her pass through. Old lady looked at that Indian FT, said “excuse me, please, sorry…” and that stupid Indian FT just refused to move his fat ass. I can’t move any further cos trolleys had block my way. Stupid Indian FT held his head high and stared down t the old fragile lady with his hairy nostril. So freaking ridiculous behavior.

    Dear Karin,
Your letter truly amuses me. I was wondering if you deliberately write bad English to emphasize a point or if this is the way you really speak. Either ways, please give those PRC blokes and girls a break. Most of them just picked up English upon their arrival here in Siingapore to do the jobs that many of us won’t do in order to provide their folks back home a better life. Oh, and one more thing, not all Singaporeans have degenerated into such snobs that we don’t like the sight of poorly dressed immigrant workers in our posh malls that they probably contributed to in building.

    • Zee said

      Thumbs up on your reply!

    • Snoopy Says said

To dislike poor sense of dressing doesn’t mean that person is a snob. And so what if our English is not as perfect? At least we have no problem communicating with one another. We made the effort to learn English. If u want to stay and work in Singapore, u speak our language. English is Singapore’s FIRST language! Meesiam will never have hum inside! Dun bring disgusting culture to our homeland. We work so hard to keep our land clean!
Alan Ho, would u rather Singaporeans pen down their frustrations than take to the stress? Juz look at our neighbouring country. We Singaporeans may love to shoot words but we are civilize enough not to put our words into violent actions.

    • TrulyAsia said

Karin’s English seems ok to me wo. Unless the SG English standard has shot up so much. But i agree, i believe that we all wud love to learn a new language if we have to. I think to PRCs they always had the impression that Mandarin is the 1st language of SG, and i think some of them still wonder why Chinese here prefer to speak English. Also, to SG Chinese who speak very little Mandarin, i will encourage you to pick up more of the language, it’s great fun.

I am too a SGean working abroad for the last three years. One of my trips back on board SQ, I was sitting beside an elderly western European couple. Our friendly chat brought about the usual “where are you from?” I told them Singapore and they had nothing but praises for our national carrier. The conversation led on to their frequent visits to our country en route to Australia, whenever they make a trip down under. They asked “where were you educated? As you English is very good.” I found this question strange and unsure where it will lead to. “I was fully educated in Singapore”, and I told them our education was all in English. The next thing I heard from them :” when we visited 10 , 15 years back everyone there was like you and we were pleasantly surprise at how easy it is during our stopover, everyone was accommodating and friendly. But during our last trip back (4yrs ago), we found it strange And more difficult in terms of communication and the level of service declined.” “were they asian?” “yes, Chinese, just like you!” I had to defend and told them they were probably immigrants from china, I am Chinese but I am fourth generation Singaporean, so I rather not be associated with my ethnicity, but my nationality. Probably it was the beer served with my meal, or just the general sentiment as it was election year, and change could have happened but didn’t, I let it rip.

I let loose on how our red passport, once considered a symbol of national pride, is now easily obtainable and cheap. How I would trade it for any other passport right now from a country who actually treats their citizens right. How I managed to get out of the ‘wheel’ of the Singapore lifestyle (work eat sleep bills, work eat sleep bills) and would try never to return. How I was happy I need not serve my country anymore, but 15 years ago I was actually contemplating making it a career. Thank God and my senses for not being stupid. I further elaborated on how the poor are not adequately taken care of, the old are made to work till they are 70-80, and special needs are not given any needs, so to speak. I explained how education is like in Singapore, they cannot fanthom how governments can give free tertiary education to foreigners but citizens have to pay. They were shocked when I mentioned the concept of COE and ERP. The list goes on, it made the 15hr flight a breeZe.

I’m not a management expert, but I remember Maslows hierarchy of needs, and how every level of that hierarchy has to be filled, for someone to be happy. Our government has failed to satisfy these needs to 40% of SGeans. Like a cat, once its owner is unable to provide something for its well being, it will leave and not come back. There are many friends who already left and there are tons more hoping to get out of the little red dot we once were proud of. Only 60% are happy? ( so says the polls) that’s a fail if you ask me, for a government so hyped up on GPA and grades, scoring a 60% is a fail. The incumbent has propbably never even given a scholarship applicant a chance seeing that their grades are on average 60%, how can they even think of patting themselves on the back, let alone increase their own wages. I thin Singaporeans should not even given them a chance.

The mass importing of FOREIGN TALENT policy, together with liberal immigration policy in granting work permits, employment passes, s passes, PRs & Citizenship (like as if it was toilet paper) are policies that sounds more like a NIGERIAN SCAM then WP MP Chen Show Mao proposal of investing in our elderly, disabled & poor, this comparison of policy rebuttal occurred to me thanks to PAP MP Vikram Nair.

If the economy growth & sustainability is based on mere inflating of population, the economy is hence NOT self sustaining & there will be a point of time when Singapore simply will not be big enough to take in more people & would this cause an economy slow down? collapse?

Lets say Singapore hits our maximum possible 6.5-7 Million & cannot take in more new people in, at this point how to further grow the economy??? So the PAP government once again got to WRONG in going got QUANTITY NUMBERS & NOT QUALITY.

Mr Chen’s proposed policy in investing in the elderly disabled & poor is more if a quality improvement whereas PAP’s floodgate of foreigners & liberal immigration policy is of quantity. Singapore is a small country with limited land space so the clear choice would be quality how ever our extremely talented & multi million dollar highest in the world paid cabinet of Ministers got it wrong on going for numbers & quantity, Which in the long run is NOT SUSTAINABLE as there will be a point where we simply cannot take in more people, maybe that point might even be now as the transportation failures of the MRT can be taken as a sign of an over stretched transport infrastructure
