Filipino shocked at ‘racism’ displayed by Singaporeans

Posted by temasektimes on June 14, 2012

I am appalled by the sheer amount of racism and sweeping generalizations in this article. The Philippines (and Filipinos) have its own share of flaws (e.g. poverty, corruption, lack of law enforcement, etc.) and I am sure Singapore isn’t spotless either (e.g. ageing population, income disparity, etc).

I can hardly consider the Angus Ross Literature prize as the “world standard” in measuring someone’s English ability. That’s what the TOEFL and IELTS are for: a standardized English test that all the world’s universities and companies (read: not just outside but inside the UK, mind you) recognize.

It’s unfortunate that you have witnessed the negative side of living in the Philippines. No country is perfect and I’m sure Singapore has its own social problems. I will not justify your observations about my country as I have seen the other side of living in the island of Singapore that would most definitely not make its way in your state-controlled mainstream media and tourist guides.

I do not judge a whole nation by a small number of its citizens either. Every person is different and I tend to look at the bigger picture in every person I meet.

To wrap things up, you don’t improve the state of your country by stepping upon other nations. I’m sure we all aspire of having the good life someday; we all just differ in the way we achieve it. When you start throwing mud at another person, the people seeing the fight will have a bad taste in his mouth, just like what this article did. Don’t expect the next slew of comments to be quite civil as I admit a number of my fellowmen can get emotional when national pride is at stake. Too bad for the author, we’re actually celebrating our Independence Day today.

At the end of the day, you’ve said your piece but have you actually done something to improve the situation? You don’t like seeing Filipino maids in your HDB flats but your government keeps on encouraging foreign talents to come to Singapore. Admit it or not, you need us as much as we need you. There’s not much work where these maid come from so they have to seek work elsewhere. Just imagine if all the FTs leave Singapore; whose going to man all your shops and do civil service?

I’m inspired by the way Singapore has elevated itself after having separated from Malaysia decades ago, how LKW has pursued the type of economy you all Singaporeans enjoy. But behind all those gleaming high rise building walls and trendy shopping districts, you can never hide the fact that the foreigners you so love to criticize are the ones running your economy.

Sincerely,

Eizan
Filipino

Good for you. We are proud TO BE Singaporean. At least we can be PROUD in our own country. We don’t have to go to the Philippines to earn our living and declare in another country that we are PROUD SINGAPOREANS – pfft! It’s people like you that we wish would get on the next plane out of here and declare your national pride on other soil – NOT OURS – tyvm!

Philippine is nothing to be proud of compared to other countries, low employment, squatters are rampant, and the like but there is something in our history that cannot be forgotten and will always lived in our hearts. Filipino are always be a Filipino no matter where we are in the corners of the world. But still it’s more fun in the Philippines!

I am sure you don’t see any problems in pinoyland even with all the shit around you.
At this rate, the word pinoy will earn a place in many languages and it will be used to describe a person who has no ability to see a problem.
In other words, workers who slack on the job will be told, “don’t be a fucking pinoy !” or “don’t do a pinoy on me!”

I have my fair share of working with Pinoys in Spore and I must admit most of them are friendly and down to earth.
They basically have a positive attitude towards life and most indeed appreciate the fine conditions in staying here.
Of course, there will be some “bad eggs” out to cause to cause social disharmony but rest assured it is only the minority.

The author has given his/her fair view and through that perspective we (Sporeans) should be mindful of the delicate social fabric that weaves through our daily life and in no way should it be compromised with or without FTs.

    • Jardel said

Btw, if you are a talent, HK would have passed the law to allow Pinoy maids to be PR. What happened there in the end? That was thrown out of the court. Talent? Think again.

from my personal observations of my previous two ex Filipino colleague (Business development managers), they seem to be pretty good at singing, chatting and dancing. Anything except doing a good job at other tasks allocated to them… That’s why you see most of them in the service industry, doing the only things they do best… singers…, telemarketers…(i hung up when I hear them), waiters….

      Talents? My foot.

If you understand one swallow does not make a summer, then you will appreciate that one or more filipinos in civil service does not make filipinos indispensable or to put it simply, nothing to crow about.

Andre, why don’t you bet that you will shaft your own ass if you cannot rally all your filipinos to leave spore and make spore come to a standstill?
I will wager the day Spore, HongKong, etc , especally China ban all filipinos from working in the host country, thousands of filipinos will praise you to heaven…lol

      • sweetbean said

What Eizan was implying is that civil service would cease to function without Filipinos. No one is saying there is not a single one of your people in civil service but certainly NOTHING in this country will fall apart if you and your lot puck your bugs and go buck home – get it?

    • jack neo said

This idiot probably thinks it is LeeKuanWee….lol
I will wager LKY will turn down the offer to run his country. The oldman will say it is a lost cause even if he has 10 GohKS, 10 LimKS, 10 TohCC, etc to help him.
They have already exported their wives and daughters to be maids……and the men are still living in denial, wanking each other to feel good about themselves.

Sadly this idiot takes the cake when he believes foreigners are running spore’s economy. By his logic, he can claim filipinos are running the world’s economy because they are the biggest exporter of labour….

I think the people behind all these smokescreens and propoganda machines failed to contain n realise is that the local population is highly charged and awoken to their political surroundings. Singapore is probably the last meaningful frontier in this region as all other asean countries have already awoken for the past two decades… Ie hong kong hand over, string of political drama in philippines since marcos, thaksin in thailand etc etc.
In short, sg is going through change of mindsets, however whats uniquely singaporean imo is that everything from fts to mouse n cats and blogs or online celebs are put into the firing line or as meatshields.
What can we say when we are swimming in this cesspool of information and disinformation?
Just this…. To those propagandist, no singaporean should hurt or cheat another singaporean in anyway. We have a sovereignty to uphold. If you think otherwise, you are seriously a Fing arsehole.

    This is nationalism.

Singaporeans are already very tolerant of the Pinoys and other foreigners. If the reverse happens in the Philippines or any other country, I am sure you will see riots and a worse case situation there.

The Philippines has a population of approx 90 million people. If the playboy President Aquino opens the floodgate of the country and allow in 30 million foreigners into the Philippines in a period of say 20 years, the Pinoys will surely raise up in arms and kick their government and all the foreigners out.

So, just shut the fark up and be thankful to the gracious people of Singapore.

  26. Why are Singaporean are so bitchy and negative. Why need to look at a small picture then the big picture. If you are better person ,you should show your better quality. This attitute of you are very disgraceful. When im travell around asia and they asked where im from ,i was so embarrassed to say that i’m from Singapore. That is so bad you people behave not only in singapore but overseas.Change your act because it will tarnish you and your country fellow women and men. Be humble and thankful and most of all be smart not a fool !!!!!!

Is like China people infested Hong Kong, but what can hong kong people do ? Why we so anti foreign is because since 1980s , you all are just a tools to help us , and right now you wanted to take over us ? Maid help owner, china people help local owner … is only because of the government that make you here today . If you think you are so great or any foreigner is so great , then just go back to your own country ? Why bother seeking job in Singapore.

You are here because you need us , you dare to speak because you are behind computers ..

  33. SC said

“Just imagine if all the FTs leave Singapore; whose going to man all your shops and do civil service?”

Shops will close and civic service will only be shaken very slightly.

What will remain are the true businesses that can sustain. Crappy business will wrap up for the better of the society, like unrooting of weeds.

Life will goes on, strong, because our society will and can adjust.

    As an example:
    (1) We don’t need breadtalk in every town, every mall. If breadtalk’s bread is good, we will travel to the next town to get their breads by taking our MRT (which will no longer be crowded). With lesser breadtalk shops around, the need for foreigner labor will not be required. With lesser shop units, this will in fact reduce Breadtalk’s operating cost and profit margin being maintained. The key is : can breadtalk produce good and delicious bread for people to crave for? If not, whose fault is this?

    (2) With no more FT, SMRT/SBS will have to upped the salary of the drivers and more citizens will consider taking up the drivers jobs as the salary can feed an extended family together. This may hurt the bottomline of SMRT and SBS but its not like a negative profit, just a reduced profit. The corporate will have to adjust and adapt too, not just the citizens only. Furthermore, with lesser crowder, more people may take the public transport, who earn? Still SMRT and SBS.

    (3) Will this frightened off the foreign investments? I think so but not all. Because Singapore offers a strong educated workforce to supplement their operations. We are talented too, I firmly believe. Those that will leave are those foreign companies that have been exploiting on foreign labors (i.e. the banks), they can always go open shop where the foreign labors come from and Singaporeans have nothing to lose because such company already are not hiring much singaporeans in the first place (there are so many workaround for the singaporeans-foreigner ratio). With lesser foreigner companies, local companies can flourish with more opportunity and will value local workforce better (without the distraction of foreign workforce).

In short, our development growth are false growth. They are sustained by foreign investments using foreign labors on our local grounds with our government hoping that some profits will circulate into our local market. Foreigners are not fueling an economy directly owned by us. They are fueling an economy more for the foreigner investments, global market. Lousy way to grow a nation.

I am not saying that with the disappearing of foreign labors now, things will be easier. It will be hard. But the hard times we will be facing will definitely result in sweet outcomes. It’s worthwhile.

If you think of things holistically, you will realize this false sense of growth benefits no one native to Singapore and we can stop it anytime. Its about, legally, politically, how do we do so? You will say my point of view is too simplistic, I say your manifestation of the problems if we rely on no foreigners is blinding you.

Nicely written! You conveyed almost all my sentiments exactly!

MNCs utilizing and stocking up on foreign labour here are exploiting our country as well, using it as a powerful stepping stone on an already developed country, without the risk of failed investments. They should only be allowed to stay if they maintain a certain percentage of local employees; Singapore is developed now, we don’t need to beg for MNCs to stay, there are other willing companies who will invest.

False growth indeed. We are probably among the only ones with a fiscal surplus, yet delving in public debt. Illusions really. The thing to watch for now will be the investment into the Euro. Maybe the reason for the influx of foreigners lay not only in the votes, but to recoup expected losses from there?

Good argument. Thanks. The thing to consider is : both local and foreign business investment should be warmly accepted. You see business means employment and good paying jobs bring with it the means to provide the creature comforts that all of us hope to enjoy. I would always love to see Singaporeans succeed and earn good money. The middle class is crucial to the economy. They spend. Others benefit. The cascading impact is that it is good all round. The poor or so called lower socio-economic class: these are the fellow citizens we should lend a helping hand to. I do not mean charity. I mean real help. Example teaching them a new skill or providing them incentives to improve themselves. There will always be those who cannot or will not make it, but I believe that we should always strive to raise the standard. Singapore must always be First World! All the best and keep working and look on the bright side of things.

P.S. With regard to FTs – this is an issue that the government has to look into as an imperative. It has become too heated and divisive and the onus is now on the PAP to solve the problem and allay the fear of Singaporeans.

    • Mel said

I agree that Singaporeans are talented as I have seen many holding specialized and senior positions everywhere during my work trip overseas. The big problem is that that our govt is pushing our work ethics and skills down to the level of these 3rd world FTs mainly, to lower the salaries equal to the standard of living of these countries. We would welcome foreign talents who can add value and help us to progress not cheap workers who think that they are here because we Singaporeans are not capable. Our reputation for being an effective and organized nation is slowly diminishing as we are being pushed back down to 3rd world standards.

  34. Btw if you lot are STARVING back home in the Philippines, THAT IS NOT Singaporeans’ problem. It IS YOUR GOVERNMENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to feed and create jobs for you.

The type of government you lot kept voting in and out reflect the ordinary person in the street: useless and corrupted.

Lets just ignore all these pro-Pinoy hypocritical sentiments. So much about advancing oneself without stepping on other nations, but thats what they are trying to do here.

You ran away from your slums to work here, try to assert yourself over the others, thinking you’re all superior. When others lash out at you, you act appalled by the reaction, and victimise yourselves.

What kind of reaction did you expect to get, if you portray bad attitudes? Too high an ego to think that people might actually NOT like your ways, especially when most find it an annoyance?

Lets just ignore them. Full of crap. We have never turned away nice well behaved people from our shores. Your ego has blinded you to your own uncouth attitudes and pride till your cannot accept that you are ever doing anything wrong.

Singapore will not collapse without you. We have no quarrel with other FTs who are justly qualified, well behaved and earning their means fairly here.

You are not an inevitable choice. You are merely an option. Dont get ahead of yourselves.

The main part of the article written by this pinoy scum is this “you can never hide the fact that the foreigners you so love to criticize are the ones running your economy.”…did he ignored the fact that if they think they can run other countries economies, philippines will not become the sick-man of Asia filled with lowly scums, morons, human trash and bastards always trying to cheat on others!

They can’t even run their own country and yet dare to claim credit for running Singapore…gosh, these filthy pinoys dogs, pigs and scums really have an distorted sense of pride…no wonder their country remains a shit country after so many years of independence!

I’m glad that we have China to smash these pinoys scums’ arrogance…where they continued to hide their lifeless tail (which once wagged when their US masters give them some unwanted leftovers) in between their legs with eyes stoop!!!!!

    Dear Filipino Friends,
I would like to tell the Filipinos who try comment here is Temasek .. Don’t loose your dignity by arguing with Singaporeans here. not worth it. You people come here solely to earn more money and make your life comfortable. You people are not cheating, robbing anybody here to get flamed like this. The world has changed and the people have to change. Everyone needs to work hard for their piece of bread. The Singaporeans are not trained for that and simply because of their inability they lament, abuse and behave like racists. This is not my fault or Filipino’s fault. Its Singaporeans fault and they have to learn that. Each and every bunch of Singaporeans have their hatred against Filipinos, Malaysians, PRC Chinese, Indians, Indonesians, Hongies, Caucasians, etc. They don’t like anybody actually. This hatred is not new, they hated when lot of people from Hong Kong came to SIngapore, they lament and abuse like this.

You actually no need to explain these people about your conditions back in your country to show that you are polite to them. THese people queue up for days for a piece of free gift. Thats how cheap they are!!

Though you people have taken up lot of jobs which supposed to be Singaporeans’ job, the service level is better compared to the one given by the locals.

Cheers and happy living in SIngapore.

      Dear PRC fool,

Please get this clear, it’s not that S’poreans are incapable of cleaning their own houses. We earn more in the time it takes and we can afford to hire cheap labour, simple economics.

We are very well-educated and trained. Too qualified, in fact, which leaves us no choice but to demand higher wages than the pittance that these desperate Pinoys (and probably yourself) are happy to accept. Our currency is strong and working a few years here can enable these FTs to buy a house, land and start a business in their homeland. It’s different for us, with our high cost of living.

Yes, we dislike nationalitites which flood our country. I understand u PRCs have no concept of that, since u are the locusts that everyone hates anyway but our land is scarce and limited and S’pore is bursting at the seams.

Some peole might queue up for a few minutes for free gifts. Compare that to mercenary, ruthless PRCs who poison babies, lace cabbages with formadelhyde, shamelessly copy anything that can be copied, run over toddlers and watch them die, cheat old men of every cent… (tip of the iceberg, u should know your own people better), well, who should be ashamed here? 🙂

Seeing how terrible PRC English is, I bet u are happy that another nationality is being made fun of. Your people’s standard of service is at the same low level as the Pinoys, no wonder u like them so much.

Have a nice time trying to rebut. You can’t. 🙂

To welcome you politely, the govt calls you talent.so stay grounded and know you are pinoys by birth. If you have done the right thing at the right place, this anti foreigners sentiments would not have set in . So blame yourself and digest it. Its not going to a bed of roses when you come another land and pee around and dirty the place. So learn to deal with it..

  49. F**K_THE_PINOYS said

My dear fellow Singaporeans, why don’t everyone do this : whenever I call a service provider eg. telco, bank, hospital etc. and I hear a Pinoy pick up the call, I will without fail demand that a local attend to my call simply by saying I can’t understand what the Pinoy is saying. And without fail, my call will be passed to a local. And I do the same whenever I receive a call from a telemarketer. If every S’porean can do that, gradually over time, the companies that employ Pinoys will find them redundant and maybe stop hiring these 3rd world, low-life bastards.

Please read these two paragraphs from the article from global english.com, http://www.globalenglish.com/whoweare/newsroom/press_releases/757

Only the Philippines attained a score above 7.0, a BEI level within range of a high proficiency that indicates an ability to take an active role in business discussions and perform relatively complex tasks. This is particularly interesting because the Philippines, a country with one-tenth of the population of India, recently overtook India as a hub for call centers.4 Joining the Philippines in the top five were Norway (6.54), Estonia (6.45), Serbia (6.38) and Slovenia (6.19).

It is not surprising that both the Philippines and Norway—the only two countries in the top five in both 2011 and 2012—are improving their economies, based on the latest GDP data from the World Bank. The increased Business English capability for global workers from these two countries is an indicator of continued economic growth and business success.

I am not pinoy but I am a foreign talent working in Singapore nonetheless. I bet you Singaporeans feel really pleased with yourselves for flaming the foreigners the way you did online. Don’t forget, what you have posted is not only viewable by people in Singapore. It is for the whole wide world to see. And in most parts of the civilized world, your kind of behavior is frowned upon with disdain. But many of you do not even know this because you were simply not taught. Perhaps your parents’ or your grandparents’ generations knew it but they were too busy working their asses off to make a better life for you that they have missed imparting it on you. You guys are nothing but a sad, sorry bunch who just need to find an excuse to justify the sorry state you are in. To people from a civilized world, you guys are nothing but a bunch of whining bigots. Your comments are so immature and childish. Every country is known for its own idiosyncracies…..Taiwan has rowdy politicians, Thailand has a vibrant sex trade, Malaysia and Indonesia has corrupt politicians, India has lots of bureaucracy but Singapore……..Singapore is becoming famous for its whining bigot populace.

You guys have lost your moral compass. You can no longer draw the distinction between what is acceptable and what is not. This is evident from the growing moral issues in the society, like people of high social standing going for prostitution with minors. You can say that you didn’t participate in it directly but it is telling of what the society is turning into. Let me post you this challenge…….if you like to flame foreign talents and foreign workers so much, can you be true to yourself and honestly say that you work really hard for your pay? Hardworking Singaporeans are a dying breed and a thing of the past. Young Singaporeans are complacent and work shy. They chow keng and ciak chua all the time. Suka suka take medical leave without producing the MC. Headache la, diarrhea la….all kind of macam also have. You go internet shopping, get on facebook, tweeter, instant messaging, post bigot blogs, and have group chit chat orgies discussing all manners of topics from soccer, COE prices, movies, property prices, to ministers pays, take multiple coffee and smoke breaks, come to work late and go off early, never work weekends, and then have the cheek to criticize hardworking foreigners. You guys really have a misplaced sense of entitlement. Wake up pal, the world doesn’t work that way. If you get money for not working, it is called welfare. I remember the gov’t say Singapore will never be a welfare state. I agree totally. Otherwise, Singapore will need bailout, like what is happening in Europe now. So please, before you start shooting off your fat mouths complaining about FTs and FWs again, just take a look at yourself in the mirror. You like what you see?

You fucking sick dogs and bitches of Asia should just shut your mouth and fuck creatures of your same kind around quietly, and Singaporeans might perhaps give you some of our leftovers!

Did you also look at the mirror every morning yourself…and did you realized that you are a pathetic lowly stinky smelling filthy mother fucking beggar in Singapore? That you have to depend on Singapore to give you a job? Try fucking back to where you come from and see whether you get a job or not, and then start posting the above article…otherwise, just shut the fuck-up and behave like a beggar! Using the “Angus Ross Literature prize” as an international benchmark for English proficiency is a stupid standard , it’s just an international standard developed in a small portion of your narrow imagination. English proficiency should be based on four factors namely speaking, reading, listening and writing. The Angus Ross prize is a “literature” prize, a competition of “written works” and does not exhibit all the four elements involved in the IELTS (speaking, listening, writing and reading). If you base English proficiency on studies conducted by Global English Corporation or maybe on some web articles from Forbes magazine (http://www.forbes.com/sites/kenrapoza/2012/04/05/countries-with-the-best-business-english/).

I say and repeat again: Pinoys at all levels of society are highly opinionated. This could be due to their political culture: flag bearing, breasts beating, hysteria, mobbish show of sound and fury signifying nothing. Just look at their domestic politics: senator said this, judge overruled, police chief intervened and finally prisoner sent to live in “prison” with favoured amenities. If I am a Pinoy, I will feel so ashamed in the ineptness of my country. Fortunately I am Singaporean and we have to guard ourselves against the subtle and not-so-subtle infiltration of this foreign sick man of Asia citizens from being emboldened here. The TT said he/she felt threatened to be mobbed by Singaporeans. This is pinoy-talk at its best or worst? – making comments like this here – in Singapore, we are law abding society and we do not kidnap, plant bombs, protest in streets and certainly do not mob. Pinoys have a hollywood cowboy mentality – guntotting, cigarette smoking and imagined they are westernised. Be Asian for a start. Respect the host country that feeds you. We Singaporeans have to watch them closely on their behaviour – their covers are exposed now due to their numbers and behaviour. We are no longer daft and we guard our precious homeland with our loyalty and life if necessary. Majulah Singapore!!!

You all even got the gall to sit on RESERVED SEATS IN THE TRAIN and NEVER EVEN GIVE THEM UP to the old folks and pregnant ladies. Come to people’s country don’t know how to behave. And here you are BOASTING ABOUT HOW well-educated and WELL-SPOKEN IN ENGLISH you Filipinos are.

Yet even your supposedly professional executive PINAYS working in the CBD behave like dogs in heat at the mere sight of a Caucasian.

        Bloody Ingrates.

I’ve been reading comments from this site and just try to attribute what people are saying here as a nationalistic and a very heated debate, name calling and such would be normal if people are passionate about the topic, but as a Filipino OFW working here in Singapore, I’m now afraid with this post, its not everyday that you’ll see a post in the internet that a person is giving an ultimatum like this, like the guy above I’m showing this thread to my boss and that will be the reason for my resignation. -1 Pinoy in singapore

@Wibbit Wibbit, are you for real? would you really SHOOT TO KILL a pinoy? or like what you said KILL THEM WITH YOUR BARE HANDS if they act the MACHO HOOLIGAN here, have you been to Lucky Plaza at night and spend time at the bars there?

      • Singaporean men ARE ALL NATIONAL SERVICE — aka Military Conscripted men. Perhaps a concept that is totally alien to PINOYS like you?

No wonder your women are so havoc and behaving like whores here in Singapore — the FREEDOM they have to do as they please. I honestly can’t fathom how you pinoys could be so blunt and ignorant to take credit for Singapore’s ancestral glory. This country was built on the sweat tears and blood of our forefathers that toiled through this barren land to what it has become today. We Singaporeans have all the right to be proud of our soil, no matter how much the incumbent ignores its natives.

We would like to throw down the gauntlet to the pinoys.

We dare your proud asses to go back to your country and make a difference there on your home soil, not here. Lets see how much difference can your “intellects” make in your country. Its in a pathetic state, help it, make it better, heal your country. If your smart enough to understand, we don’t need you as much as you don’t us. We don’t need such unbridled arrogance in our country. We don’t need such people. We need people who would be able to make a difference to our country like how our forefathers not those who hitch a free ride and claim that the car is theirs.

Once again, go back and save your country if your as good as you claim to be.

    • iai said

Yeah! historical facts are irrefutable. Our ancestors built this country. Pinoys just arrived past few years and working in service and certain industries want to talk big. History again shows the mess in their country. Beware of big talkers, They are just like frogs, they will puff, bloat and portrude their chests in an impressive overture to show they are bigger than what they are. Just have to see through their bluff.

I am a Singaporean and after reading all the comments and blogs from you bigots, I am ashamed to call you my fellow countrymen. I can only conclude that many of you are bo ka si, never taught any manners by your parents and probably the result of being raised by maids from the countries you so detest.

I work in a managerial position and I hire new staff from time to time. But given a choice between a local and a foreigner, I would hire the foreigner anytime. I have no issues with paying NS increments but let me tell you why I will choose the foreigner. Singaporean youngsters are arrogant, lazy, complacent and cannot take any kind of hardship. You guys have lost the hunger to succeed. All you care about is fun fun fun. You come to work late and leave early. In between, you get on facebook, tweeter, instant messaging, hold chit chat orgies, take multiple coffee breaks, post racist blogs, or play computer games. You go on medical leave wantonly, which seem to miraculously coincide with days just before and after long weekends or after a big early morning soccer match on tv. Some of you AWOL altogether, sometimes for days on end. You are sloppy in your work and demand such low quality of yourselves. You have a short memory and either cannot understand simple instructions or pretend not to be able to. When reprimanded for your sloppiness or mistake, you either cry, argue back or quit the job. You guys are just a bunch of pulpy strawberries. I am sure many middle aged Singaporean managers will agree with me on this.

There was a time when Singaporeans were known as honest, tough, resilient, conscientious, hardworking people. This is fast becoming a thing of the past, only a page of history to be confined to the deep recesses of the memory. If the nation were to rely solely on you guys to support the economy, the country will be in deep shit. If you had been reading the papers, which I doubt many of you have, businesses in Singapore feeling the pinch from the recent changes in labor import policies. You guys are probably feeling very smug and happy that foreign talents and workers are being punished. If you think foreigners are being punished, you are just being shallow. If the economy suffers, you will suffer. It may seem like the gov’t is finally giving in to your chest-beating but in actual fact, what they are doing may be simply transferring the pressure to you. If you want to complain, fine. I will give you what you want and let’s see what happens. Isn’t this the strategy parents use on their wayward kids in the old days? Have parents stopped doing so, just like how they stop telling their kids they are stupid when they do stupid things? If you don’t tell your kids they are stupid when they do stupid things, they will grow up not knowing what stupid is. And they will do stupid things, like many of you guys do. If you want the maids, waitresses, construction workers, road sweepers, rubbish collectors, cleaners to leave, someone will have to do their jobs. So, can those of you who are willing take these jobs, please step forward?

Do you ask yourself how this whole foreign talent business started? Who first started the trend of hiring foreigners? Foreigners themselves? I think not. They are amongst you. You might even know or are related to some of them. So why did they start hiring foreigners in the first place? Did something change? Are they selling their own countrymen short? Can the gov’t alone be responsible for all this? Do you know that thousands of jobs remain untaken at job fairs each year? Many people rather be unemployed than to take up lowly jobs.

There is one job reserved exclusively for citizens in Singapore….and that is taxi driving. What do you think of the level of service of taxi drivers in Singapore? Are you satisfied with their service? Can you use them as exemplary high quality Singaporean service?

There could be some truth to what you say, but i will not go so far as to arrive at the same conclusion as you. For a start, how many employees are there in your company, what is your company’s core business and what sort of employees are you tasked to hire ?
The organization I work for has 10,000 employees and the majority are young sporeans. As a snr manager i am not involved in hiring but mainly on operations and training. I can say with a degree of satisfaction young sporean workers have performed to a good standard.

Being from the old school, i am grateful to PAP oldguards like GohKS and company. No doubt they led by example, but do you see this in the current PAP leadership ? Have they inspired the present lot of young men and women to do their job with passion and not just by pay alone. I can go on, but i trust you get my drift…
about time the buck stops with those at the top.

If older Sg like me has helped to build Sg from 1959 to 1990 before the massive influx,
Why are they older Sg cast away and being

Not because i drove taxi for a few years even though I hold few degrees, postgrad Diplomas from UK and Australia, but to make
A sweeping statement on taxi drivers. Have
You rode a taxi in Philippines, and other countries to make the comparison.
Finally, the foreigners may not be blame but our govt’s agenda to bring in indiscriminate
Immigrants of 2 million out of 3 milliOn Sg is replacing the older born n bred Sg without regard.
I hope you will continue to keep your managerial position and not be replaced and

The younger generation may not understand the importance of respect, understanding and tolerance since they do not walk along our forefathers’ footsteps. The time when Singapore is not yet independent, the time when all our forefathers are considered foreigners, low in status, poor in finance and not as well off as the British. Many years after, our children have forgotten the ill-treatments, the humiliation and the poor benefits our forefathers had once been in, and are doing the same thing towards the foreigners now.

I am not siding with the foreigners. In some cases which I have observed over a period of time, there are foreign talents that do not exercise respect and understanding towards the locals as well, which somehow rubs into the open wound, and increases the tension between the two groups.
