Pinoy ‘FT’ told to delete Facebook account by company after making jibe at Singaporean

Posted by temasektimes on June 26, 2012

Pinoy ‘FT’ Rosario Garcia Tenorio was told by her company to delete her Facebook account after an irate netizen called up to lodge a complaint against her for making derogatory remarks about a native Singaporean working as a Crew Leader at McDonald’s.

Rosario had earlier posted a sarcastic comment on the Facebook page of McDonald’s mocking at a Singaporean Ling Ling:

“She should study more so that she wouldn’t end up in MacDonald serving me fries.”

Her insensitive comment sparked a massive outcry among netizens with many condemning her for it.

Despite the furore, Rosario remained unrepentant and posted later on her Facebook:

“The only thing I said was to advise people to study harder if not they might end up flipping burgers.”

This is not the first time that pinoys have hurled insults at Singaporeans online. A few weeks ago, a group of pinoys jeered at Singaporeans struggling to find a job on Facebook.

One pinoy Marie Hilario asked Singaporeans to ‘f**k off’ as they cannot do without them:

“Without Filipinos in Singapore, you are NOTHING!”

Another pinoy Mickey Bebe boasted that Filipinos made up about 25 percent of almost all the companies in Singapore:

“if you hate us…then ask your government not to hired filipinos here… and im sure u can’t do without us… coz almost of the company half or 1/4 of their employee was PINOY’s…”

In other countries, foreigners are expected to integrate into local society, but it seems to be the other way round in Singapore with PAP leaders exhorting Singaporeans constantly to make the newcomers feel accepted, welcomed and happy in Singapore.

$23 million dollars of church funds used to finance Ho Yeow San’s music career – Commissioner of Charities

Posted by temasektimes on June 26, 2012

The Commissioner of Charities (COC) has suspended governing board members, trustees, employees, agents and Executive members of City Harvest Church under the Charities Act.

In a statement released to the media, COC said it instituted an Inquiry into the City Harvest Church (the Charity) on 31 May 2010 under the Charities Act. Concurrently, the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) commenced investigations into financial transactions involving several individuals and companies, related or connected to the Charity.

Both the COC and CAD have since concluded its Inquiry and investigations, respectively which revealed serious misconduct and mismanagement in the administration of the Charity, particularly in relation to the funds that were in the Building Fund which had been raised and earmarked for specific purposes.

More shockingly, financial irregularities of at least $23 million from the Charity’s funds have been discovered which were used with the purported intention to finance Ho Yeow Sun’s secular music career to connect with people.

In 2002, the Charity’s founders, Kong Hee and Ho Yeow Sun (“Sun Ho”), embarked on a “Crossover Project” [“the Project”], with the purported intention to use Sun Ho’s secular music to connect with people and reach out to non-Christians.

Over a period of 3 years (2007 to 2010), at least $23 million was used. However, during this period of time, the Executive members were not told of the actual purpose of the use of these funds.

There was also a concerted effort to conceal this movement of funds from its stakeholders.

Baey Yam Keng: CDAC to reach out to new immigrants

Posted by temasektimes on June 26, 2012

PAP MP Baey Yam Keng who incurred the wrath of native Singaporeans by publicly defending NUS PRC scholar Sun Xu for scolding them ‘dogs’ a few months ago had unveiled further initiatives to reach out to foreigners.

Speaking to queries from the media, Mr Baey, who is also a member of CDAC’s board of directors declared that CDAC wants to work more closely with new immigrants.

“Many new immigrants have expressed interest in helping the community but, because they are new to Singapore, they often do not know how,” he said.

Mr Baey added that CDAC can play a role to link them up and to advise them on how they can help within the community.

The government splurged $10 million dollars on a Community Integration Fund in 2010 to help make the new immigrants feel happy, welcomed and accepted in Singapore.

Singaporeans have also been urged repeatedly by PAP leaders like Mr Baey to open their ‘hearts’ and ’embrace’ the newcomers.

Spending more than what one earns – how young Singaporeans end up in debt

Posted by temasektimes on June 26, 2012

Most young Singaporeans find themselves working like slaves for the rest of their lives to service their debts because they are spending more than what they earn, according to a commentary by Financial Adviser Kelvin Ng on Yahoo News.

Despite their meager starting pay, many young Singaporeans have no qualms splurging on branded products, expensive holidays and cars which see them ending up with a mountain of debt.

Kelvin Ng used a real life example of a Singaporean couple to illustrate his point:

“Take for example a Singaporean couple who falls in love and decide to settle down. The man is in his thirties and woman in her twenties. They have a combined income of about $8,000. The man buys a proposal ring that costs $7,000 (Larry’s brand as girlfriend likes it). The couple also buy a pair of engagement rings that costs $6,000 (Cartier due to peer pressure). The wedding photo package costs $6,000, wedding dinner costs $7,000, honeymoon to Korea $3,000. They then decide to apply for a DBSS flat after countless tries with HDB’s BTO without success and have to cough up $350,000 (by taking up an HDB loan and wiping out their CPF and savings). They then spend $20,000 on minor renovation and furniture.

The man decides to upgrade his car as he could not resist the latest continental car design and coughs up $100,000 (by taking a car loan). The man likes to collect watches, saw the latest Rolex and could not resist it. He has no cash but buys it for $12,000 with an interest free 24 month installment since it is so cheap per month.”

The above case study is not uncommon among Gen Y nowadays. In fact, there are many couples with a combined income of less than $5,000 who are living the ‘high life’ which they cannot afford.

Second example of a typical Singaporean couple:

“The man is working as a mid-level manager in a MNC drawing a monthly salary of $3,000 monthly while his newly wed wife earns $2,400 monthly as an administrative staff. They bought a four-room resale flat in Hougang at $400,000 + and took a renovation loan of $50,000 to renovate their place. Then they spent their savings of $60,000 with another $40,000 chipped in from parents for their wedding dinner. The man felt he must buy a car to drive his wife around and got a new Mazda 3 at over $100,000. Before they have their first child, they are already buried deep in a mountain of debts.”

With a starting pay of only $2,600 for a fresh graduate and $1,800 for a diploma holder coupled with sky-rocketing prices of HDB flats and rampant inflation, most young Singaporeans will not be able to live the standard of life they aspire to unless their parents are filthy rich or they earn more than $10,000 monthly.

Instead of complaining non-stop about their predicament, it is time for Generation Y to manage their own expectations and live within their means or they may find themselves stuck in a rat race forever just to service the interests of their bank loans.

Whining will not get you anywhere. Only hard work, realistic expectations and prudent financial planning will help you cope with the harsh realities of life in Singapore today.

Pinoy ‘FT’ mocks at Singaporean working at McDonald’s

Posted by temasektimes on June 26, 2012

A pinoy ‘FT’ Rosario Garcia Tenorio has mocked at a Singaporean working as a Crew Leader at McDonald’s Clementi Mall.

In a comment posted on McDonald’s Singapore Facebook, Rosario noted sarcastically:

“She should study more so that she wouldn’t end up in MacDonald serving me fries.”

A graduate from the University of Northern Philippines, Rosario is currently working in the F&B industry in Singapore. She has also been observed making snide remarks about Singaporeans on Facebook.

Due to the government’s pro-foreigner and ultra-liberal immigration policies, large number of pinoys have flocked to Singapore to find work in recent years, making it one of the largest communities in Singapore.

The pinoy community recently celebrated its ‘Independence Day’ at Suntec City last Sunday with generous support from Singapore organizations such as SingTel and NUH as Singapore becomes gradually transformed to yet another province of the Philippines.

Tin Pei Ling speaks up for SMEs struggling with labor crunch

Posted by temasektimes on June 26, 2012

‘Popular’ PAP MP Tin Pei Ling has spoken up in defence of SMEs which are struggling with a labor crunch due to the recent ‘tightening’ of inflow of foreign workers by the Singapore government as it ‘tweaked’ its pro-foreigner and ultra-liberal immigration policies to placate an increasingly restive and disgruntled populace.

In a note posted on her Facebook, Ms Tin recalled a recent meeting with a group of local SME businessmen who shared their woes about the current tight labor market:

“Running SMEs is already tough and stressful. Now they are having to get jobs done with less manpower, because they have to meet their obligations to customers who do not care whether they have enough workers or not.”

Ms Tin added that they are unable to hire Singaporeans as few Singaporeans want to take up the jobs:

“I asked why they do not hire more Singaporeans to do the jobs they offer. They told me they try to do so, but the reality is that few Singaporeans want to take up those jobs, even if they raise the pay. Moreover, Singapore is at 2.1% unemployment (i.e., virtually full employment) and they simply cannot find enough locals to fill positions.”

She defended the SME businessmen that they understand the concerns of Singaporeans too:

“They are Singaporeans too, and understand such feelings expressed by Singaporeans. But they felt that this was only one side of the story, pushed by a vocal group. Their current plight shows that this is a complex issue, that foreign manpower is not all bad, and is in fact an important complement to our own labour force.”

Besides SMEs, many Government-Linked Companies and even statutory boards are employing large number of foreigners too and they are less likely to be affected by recent change in labor policies due to the resources they have at their disposal.

Singaporean asks Goh Chok Tong: Do you understand the consequence of opening the floodgates wide to foreigners?

Posted by temasektimes on June 26, 2012

Dear Mr Goh,

Your statement implies that you and LHL opened the immigration floodgate without really understanding the full 360-degree consequences.

The issue is not skilled immigrants v/s locals. Locals are skilled too but they are being marginalized in competition for jobs created in Singapore.

The issue is – no other country including immigrant friendly countries such as US, Australia, Canada allows reckless immigration without any consideration for its own citizens which has nearly destroyed core social fabric of the society.

We are human beings and not just economic digits for elite economists.

These foreigners don’t have roots in Singapore whereas our families depend on our livelihood.

Have you considered the impact on our young generation due to the paranoia that their parents are going through?

JACK LAM

Malay rights group Perkasa protest outside Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur

Posted by temasektimes on June 26, 2012

Protests may be banned with an iron fist by the Singapore government, but there is little it can do to a group of Malaysians holding a protest outside the Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur.

Nearly 300 people from Malay rights group Perkasa staged a 30-minute protest yesterday outside the Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur against Singapore ‘interfering’ in the domestic affairs of Malaysia.

They had accused Singapore diplomats of ‘participating’ in the recent Bersih 3.0 rally in support of electoral reform on 28 April and called on the Singapore government to issue an official apology to Malaysia as well as recalling the three Singaporean officials involved.

In a press statement issued last week, Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) had clarified that its officers were at the rally as impartial observers, adding that as part of their normal professional diplomatic duties, officers were expected to be updated on the host country’s developments and to understand sentiments on the ground.

With the ruling coalition Barisan Nasional facing a tough battle in the coming Malaysian General Election where the opposition may stand a chance of forming the next government, Singaporeans should expect tougher rhetoric and more ‘Singapore bashing’ in the weeks to come to divert public attention from Malaysia’s own internal problems.
