Singaporean aunty chased husband and his PRC mistress up bus and caused freak road accident

Posted by temasektimes on April 10, 2012

An angry Singaporean aunty chased her husband and his PRC mistress up a bus and caused a freak road accident instead!

According to media reports, the 61 year woman had long suspected her husband had an extra-marital affair outside when she discovered lewd messages sent to him by an unknown woman in his handphone.

One night, her husband suddenly left home at 10 O’clock in the night and suspecting he might be seeing his mistress, she followed him secretly.

The Singaporean woman was infuriated when she saw her husband behaving intimately with a PRC woman at a bus stop and confronted them directly.

The adulterous couple were shocked and tried to run away by boarding up an incoming bus. The aunty followed suit and asked the PRC woman why she seduced her husband to which she replied in a sarcastic tone:

“It is not my fault. You only have yourself to blame for marrying the wrong guy!”

On hearing the words, the aunty went berserk and tried to strangle the PRC woman. The ensuing fracas caused the bus driver to be distracted and he knocked into a motorcyclist minutes later.

It is not known if anybody was injured or killed during the accident.

Taoists OUTRAGED over use of ceremonial robes in fashion catwalk

Posted by temasektimes on April 10, 2012

Barely one week after the ‘Escape Chapel Party’ at CHIJMES was cancelled for offending the Catholic community, another religion sees red over a fashion catwalk organized by the Floral Designers Society of Singapore.

In the event hosted at Furama RiverFront Hotel on 30 March, one model was reportedly dressed in a red Taoist robe and held a ‘Ru Yi’, to match her floral hair accessories and theatrical makeup.

Mr Chung Kwang Tong, secretary-general of the Taoist Federation Youth Group, said the robe had been “exactly the same” as the sacred ceremonial robe worn by Taoist priests when they conduct religious ceremonies and important rituals, “and only ordained Taoist priests can wear it” while the ‘Ru Yi’ is considered a sacred Taoist artifact.

The photo of the model was posted on the internet and went viral on social media, triggering a massive public backlash from the Taoist community in Singapore.

A spokesperson from the Floral Designers Society Singapore explained that the robe was brought by a designer who was in charge of dressing up the models, adding that it is ‘unaware’ that the robe is used for religious purposes and wishes to extend sincere apologies to those who were offended.

Nicole Seah demands for accountability from bus companies following recent traffic accidents involving buses

Posted by temasektimes on April 10, 2012

Popular young politician Nicole Seah has demanded for accountability from bus companies SBS Transit and SMRT following two horrific road traffic accidents involving their drivers.

Last Saturday, a 66 year old woman was run over and killed on the spot by a SBS Transit bus driven by a PRC driver. Yesterday, a primary school boy was knocked down by a SMRT bus and fractured his ankle.

In her latest posting on Facebook, Nicole wrote the increasing number of such reports is worrying which has led to greater insecurity and loss of confidence in both commuters and pedestrians alike.

She added that there needs to be greater accountability and raised the following questions to the relevant authorities:

1. Are the bus companies able to furnish statistics demonstrating the number of fatalities arising from public transport-related incidents over the past decade? Has there been a trend of an increasing amount of fatalities or casualities that the citizens of Singapore should be concerned about? If the bus companies have already detected such a trend, what are the measures put in place to resolve this problem?

2. What are the hiring practices for bus captains? How rigorous and stringent is their probation period before they are allowed onto the roads? For new citizens or foreign employees, what are the practices involved in ensuring that they are familiarised with the road conduct in Singapore and its traffic rules?

The recent spate of accidents also lead to rising concerns over the driving skills of foreign bus drivers under the employment of both bus companies.

Both the government and the public transport companies have declined to furnish more information to the public on their hiring policies as well as the number of traffic accidents caused by foreign drivers.

However, Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew said in Parliament on Monday that all foreign drivers are ‘adequately’ trained before they are allowed to drive on Singapore roads:

“The more important thing actually is to make sure (that), regardless of nationality, every driver is adequately trained, appropriately qualified, and especially if they come from abroad, then they are given the kind of orientation that will help them familiarise themselves with the peculiarities of the system in Singapore.”

He added that “bus driver salaries for this sector should remain market-driven, and private bus operators should make their own commercial decisions on how to ensure that their businesses remain viable in the face of a tightening labour market.”

Heng Swee Kiat: 15 percent of foreign scholars take up Singapore citizenship within 5 years

Posted by temasektimes on April 10, 2012

About 15 percent of foreign scholars on MOE scholarship will take up Singapore citizenship within 5 years and almost all who have graduated would have taken up Singapore PR, revealed Education Minister Heng Swee Kiat in Parliament on Monady.

Mr Heng was replying to a written question by Non-Constituency MP Yee Jenn Jong who asked for the percentage of foreign scholars who fulfill their bond upon graduation.

In reply, Mr Heng said that on average, more than eight in 10 scholars from ASEAN, India and China fulfil their service obligations to work in Singapore after graduation.

He added most of the rest were granted deferment to pursue further studies and are required to serve their obligations after their studies.

However Mr Heng did not elaborate on the number of foreign scholars who eventually leave Singapore for good after studying here for a number of years on taxpayers’ monies.

Going by the available figures given, it is reasonable to conclude that the majority of foreign scholars did not settle down in Singapore to contribute to the nation eventually.

Singapore’s long-standing policy of giving generous scholarships for foreigners have come under intense public scrutiny of late after a PRC scholar from NUS Sun Xu sparked a massive public outcry with his now infamous remark on there ‘being more dogs than humans’.

SCDF: An escalator caught FIRE at Toa Payoh MRT station this morning

Posted by temasektimes on April 10, 2012

An escalator in Toa Payoh MRT station caught FIRE this morning at around 9 a.m causing anxious commuters to disperse promptly.

The Temasek Times has earlier reported that ‘smoke’ was seen coming out from a side escalator at Toa Payoh MRT station emanating a pungent smell at the same time.

According to a tip-off we received from a netizen Daniel Lim:

“We could smell something burning and all of sudden, thick black smoke can be seen emanating from the escalator.”

Jeffrey Wong added:

“Saw it this morning when I m going to take train at Toa payoh mrt station. I am thinking is it the train that caught fire!”

Noel Kwang posted on Facebook that he saw the place cordoned off with SCDF and the MRT police personnel standing guard there. Another netizen added he heard an announcement by SMRT over the PA system apologizing for the inconvenience caused by the situation.

In a statement released to the media, SCDF confirmed the incident.

“The SCDF received a call at 9.13am today, informing us of an escalator that had caught fire at Toa Payoh MRT station. One fire engine, one red rhino, two fire bikes and three support vehicles arrived at the scene eight minutes later. When SCDF personnel reached the scene, the fire had already been put out by the station staff.”

There were no reported injuries and SCDF has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

As usual, there are no statements from SMRT on the latest ‘unavoidable’ disruption which has made a mockery of Singapore’s supposedly ‘First World’ public transport statement.

25 year old Bishan Maisonette fetches $900,000 in resale market

Posted by temasektimes on April 10, 2012

Despite a slew of cooling measures introduced by the government, prices of resale flats continue to climb and it appears that the magical $1 million dollar price tag will be reached sooner, rather than later.

According to resale transactions in March, one 25 year old Bishan Maisonette in Bishan Street 13 fetched a whooping $900,000:

[Source: HDB infoweb]

Such a unit probably cost between $120,000 to $150,000 when it was first launched for sale by HDB in 1987. It is not revealed if the maisonette was bought by a local or PR.

The prices of HDB flats have nearly doubled in the last five years on the back of a supply crunch in new flats and fueled by population growth via immigration.

Dr Tan Cheng Bock: PAP may merge Ang Mo Kio and Hougang Town Councils to woo Hougang voters

Posted by temasektimes on April 10, 2012

The PAP may consider merging the Town Councils of Ang Mo Kio and Hougang together to better manage Hougang if it manages to capture the opposition stronghold in the coming by-election, revealed former PAP MP Dr Tan Cheng Bock.

In an interview with Lianhe Zaobao, Dr Tan mooted the possibility of the Prime Minister calling for a by-election in Ang Mo Kio GRC at the same time as Hougang to bring in ‘new blood’ which is widely speculated to be NTUC Deputy Secretary-General Ong Ye Kung.

The seat of Hougang was left vacant after its ex-WP MP Yaw Shin Leong was sacked from his party over his alleged extra-marital affairs with multiple married women, including a fellow party member and neighbor from China.

“The Prime Minister may propose merging Ang Mo Kio and Hougang Town Councils to increase the PAP’s chance of recapturing Hougang,” said Dr Tan.

(“另一方面,总理可能因为提倡把后港并入其(即宏茂桥)市镇会的做法,提高把后港赢回来的胜算。”)

In the aftermath of last year’s General Election, the Workers Party merged Aljunied and Hougang Town Councils to form the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC) to better manage both constituencies.

However, Singapore Management University Law Professor Eugene Tan expressed skepticism at Dr Tan’s suggestion:

“It is politically risky for the Prime Minister to merge Hougang with Ang Mo Kio at this moment in time which will incur the wrath of the electorate.”

(“就算总理坐镇的宏茂桥团队在上次大选中表现好,在这个时间点上不再让后港继续成为单选区,是具备政治风险的。)
