Kong Hee got ‘suaned’ by disgusted Singaporeans on his Facebook

Posted by temasektimes on July 7, 2012

Disgraced founder of City Harvest Church (CHC) pastor Kong Hee has been actively posting on his Facebook of late to reach out to his supporters.

Kong Hee was charged with four other board members of CHC last Wednesday for misusing the church’s funds to further the music career of his singer wife Kong Hee, a charge which he has strenuously denied so far.

Speaking to his congregation during a service last Sunday, Kong Hee said he ‘maintained his integrity’ and would reveal his side of the story in court on 25 July when his trial is expected to commence.

In a post on his Facebook today, Kong Hee wrote:

The post brought a torrent of criticisms from irate Singaporeans who ‘suaned’ him:

“I’m sorry that it has taken so much TIME to reveal yours.” – Jarrod Luo

“god know what you did , be truth to him ..” – Alvin Tam

“Face the truth, kong hee, and let court judge you, not god!” – Chen Longtai

Though some critical comments have been deleted, netizens continue to post their frank ‘feedback’ to Kong Hee who is currently out on a $500,000 bail paid for by his wife.

If convicted, Kong Hee can face life imprisonment.

PM Lee welcomes 200 new citizens and urges Singaporeans to ‘reach out’ to them

Posted by temasektimes on July 7, 2012

Before the General Election last year, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong promised to ‘listen’ to Singaporeans and slow down the inflow of immigrants.

Barely a year later, he appears to be singing a different tune as foreigners continued to be granted Singapore PR and citizenship.

Speaking at a ceremony this morning to ‘welcome’ 200 new citizens as they received their pink Singapore ICs from PM Lee this morning at a ceremony in Ang Mo Kio, PM Lee called on Singaporeans yet again to ‘reach out’ to the immigrants to make them feel welcomed, accepted and happy in Singapore.

He had earlier called on Singaporeans to ‘open’ their hearts to ’embrace’ the newcomers in spite of rising public disgruntlement on the ground.

It is not revealed how many of these ‘new citizens’ will be roped into the PAP grassroots organizations to serve as grassroots leaders to ‘serve’ native Singaporeans in due course.

In other countries, immigrants are expected to integrate into local society, but it seems to be the other way round in Singapore where Singaporeans are constantly exhorted to adapt to their way of life to the event of splurging on public monies to conduct their cultural festivals and sports to make them feel ‘at home’ in Singapore.

Tan Chuan Jin on his encounter with elderly cleaners and vagrants

Posted by temasektimes on July 7, 2012

Singapore elderly working as cleaners, collecting cardboards in the streets and begging on the roads is a common sight in Singapore nowadays as an increasing number of them fell into hard times due to lack of a comprehensive social safety net.

Though Singaporeans have the highest saving rates in the world, the bulk of them are locked in their CPF accounts which cannot be drawn out, leading to many elderly to continue working in their twilight years.

Minister of National Development Tan Chuan Jin had an encounter with a beggar and a cleaner lately which he shared as a note on his Facebook.

“Saw an uncle begging from table to table, gesticulating that he needed money for food. He was neatly and cleanly dressed. I spoke to him, asking him where he stayed, if he needed help. Initially he acted as if he could not speak or understand. I started asking him where he stayed, if he needed assistance…seemed to understand and started to walk away and waved me good-bye!” Mr Tan wrote.

He added that he knew a few vagrants and “a number do not want to be put in homes as they prefer to eke out their own living and be flexible on where they go and stayed.”

Mr Tan also spoke to a 72 year old cleaner who ‘chose’ to work:

“I asked him if his children were supporting him and why he was working. He said that he would be bored if he stayed home and if he could still work, he would rather still continue to do so.”

PAP leaders have been urging Singaporeans to work as long as they can so that they can continue to support themselves financially and not become a burden to the state.

Peter Lim may spend up to $500,000 in legal fees to fight his corruption case

Posted by temasektimes on July 7, 2012

Disgraced former Chief Commissioner of the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) Peter Lim Sin Pang may spend up to $500,000 in legal fees to fight his coming corruption case, according to tabloid reports.

Peter Lim Sin Pang will be claiming trial to 10 counts of obtaining sexual gratification from three women between May 2010 and November 2011  in exchange for favouring their companies during IT-related tenders held by the SCDF.

One of the women, former NCS director of business development Ester Goh Tok Mui. reportedly had sex with him seven times in his Tanjong Rhu apartment which he lives with his wife.

Other than his own apartment, Peter Lim is said to have engaged in sexual trysts with Goh in public places such as at various car parks and three times in a Clementi flat. Goh has since left NCS.

Peter Lim has engaged the services of senior lawyer Bala Chandran to defend him which may cost him up to $500,000 or more eventually assuming the trial takes about 10 days.

Despite the eye-popping amount, it should be just ‘peanuts’ to Peter Lim who reportedly earn more than $50,000 monthly as a ‘Superscale’ civil servant.

Cold Storage: We will ‘review’ wages of our low-income workers

Posted by temasektimes on July 7, 2012

Cold Storage supermarket chain has replied to a letter written by a Singaporean Patrick Lee on his brother’s plight working as a retail staff in the company.

Mr Patrick Lee’s brother earns only less than S$1,000 monthly after working for 20 years at Cold Storage which did not adopt the recent guidelines recommended by the National Wage Council to raise the wages of low-income workers.

In a letter to the Straits Times Forum today, Jassie Ling, the Marketing Communications Manager of Cold Storage replied that the company “has always strived to be a responsible employer as we believe in paying fair and competitive wages to all our team members.”

“We conduct a wage review for our rank-and-file staff every year, and our review that will be conducted later this month will consider the recommendation made by the National Wages Council to give a minimum increment of $50 for employees earning monthly salaries of $1,000 and below,” she wrote.

She added that Cold Storage also “offer an attractive employment package that includes staff discounts (unlimited spending on purchases across our group), medical benefits and 14 days of annual leave for all our retail staff, which is double the leave stipulated by the Employment Act.”

“As a leading and trusted employer, we value our staff’s contributions and we emphasise caring for our employees,” she ended.

The wages of Singapore’s low-income workers have remained stagnant in the past decade or so due to the relentless influx of cheap foreign workers.

Kenneth Jeyaretnam files application in High Court against Singapore government’s loan to IMF

Posted by temasektimes on July 7, 2012

Reform Party Secretary-General Kenneth Jeyaretnam has filed an application in the High Court to quash the Singapore Government’s pledge of a US$4 billion loan to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Mr Jeyaretnam is seeking the Court’s leave to make an application for a Prohibiting Order “prohibiting the Government and/or the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) from giving any loan and/or guarantee to the International Monetary Fund unless such loan was made in accordance with the provisions of Article 144 of the Constitution.”

In addition, he is also seeking the Court to grant leave to apply for a Quashing Order “quashing the Government and/or the MAS’ decision to make a US$4 billion loan commitment and/or guarantee to the IMF for contravening the provisions of Article 144 of the Constitution.”

Article 144 of the Constitution states that

(1) No guarantee or loan shall be given or raised by the Government —

except under the authority of any resolution of Parliament with which the President concurs; under the authority of any law to which this paragraph applies unless the President concurs with the giving or raising of such guarantee or loan; or except under the authority of any otherkwritten law.

In his affidavit, Mr Jeyaretnam argued that the IMF cannot accept the loan from Singapore as parliamentary approval for its release was not sought by the government and that the Minister of Finance, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam failed to respond to several open letters written by Mr Jeyaretnam raising the questions.

“In a robust democracy, a government does not hide behind technicalities and dispense with the need to make itself accountable to the people for the use of their money”, he wrote.

The affidavit concludes by highlighting the connection between domestic checks and balances on the use of public finances:

“Without accountability there is real danger that these forced savings, which cause real hardship for many poorer Singaporeans, could be dissipated through poor investment returns before we can do anything about it. This is not merely an idle academic exercise. It was not so long ago that Greece’s accounts were shown to have been manipulated.”

Kenneth is the elder son of the late opposition leader J.B. Jeyaretnam. He contested in West Coast GRC in last year’s General Election where he garnered 34 percent of the votes.

Need assistance in case of mistaken identity

Posted by temasektimes on July 7, 2012

Hi Temasek Times,

Just want to bring to light that mistake can be made by the government department and yet they refused to retify it.

My identity card numbers was recorded in the Supreme Court of Singapore in 1990 when the court declared a Mr Kang a bankrupt. It was brought to my attention when i was applying to open an account with DBS Vickers.

The risk dept. called me to say that I had a petition against me. But I was told that the IC numbers tally with mine but the name differs. Called up Supreme Court and was told that they cannot do anything about it.

I hope someone out there can help me with this matter.

Govt paper: Negative impact of casinos is ‘under control’

Posted by temasektimes on July 7, 2012

The two casinos have been operating for two years now and their negative impact on Singapore society are largely ‘under control’, proclaimed a government public ‘consultation’ paper.

In a comprehensive report published in the state media, the paper claimed that “the IRs have brought about economic benefits and the negative impact of the casinos on the law and order, and social aspects are under control.”

Meanwhile, the Casino Control Act is proposing a ‘visit limit’ to protect financially vulnerable local patrons who visit the casinos frequently.

The amendments also strive to enhance the law enforcement levers, streamline regulatory requirements and operational processes so that they keep pace with international best practices and industry developments, strengthen social safeguards and improve the tax administration.

The Singapore government proceeded to build the two IRs and casinos amid stiff opposition from some segments of Singaporeans.

Though it claimed that the IRs will help ‘create’ jobs for Singaporeans, it appear that many of their staff are foreigners and newly ‘converted’ PRs and citizens.
